A/N: This is the first time I've written a het fic of any sort since I was like 13 or 14 maybe? But a friend of mine on Tumblr requested it and well, this is what happened! I haven't written/posted a fic in almost three years, I'm hoping I will get back into it with this.
Dedications: Emma who is the star of the fic.

“Niall, remind me why we work here again?” Emma asked her co-worker with a sigh.

Niall shrugged and folded his arms on the counter top, “Because we just love selling smelly animals to small children.”

“More like we need the money,” added Niall’s boyfriend Liam as he came back from cleaning up a spill in the food aisle. A handsy child had ripped open a bag and then proceeded to spill it down the entire aisle. “It’s not worth the pay though.”

“It’s really not,” Emma agreed, eyes slowing scanning the now empty pet store.

The three friends had worked here all summer and had gotten much closer. Even though they’d all gone to school together since kindergarten, they’d never had much interaction outside of school. Liam and Niall had become especially close over the course of the last month and a half, going from just friends to dating before Emma even realized much had changed. Now, she just wished she could find someone like that.

Emma was shaken from her day dream by Niall; the blonde boy was nudging her in the arm and gesturing to a brunette who had just entered the store. The curly haired boy was being led by a small girl with brunette pigtails to the back of the store, where they kept the kittens.

“Oh, get on that, Em,” Liam teased, wiggling his eyes brows suggestively at her.
Niall laughed in agreement with his boyfriend, also wiggling his eyebrows, “He looked hot,” he stated. “Ow!” he whined, rubbing his temple where Liam had just smacked him. “Not as hot as you though, babe,” Niall added with a pout.

Liam sighed at the pout and leaned across the counter to peck his boyfriend gently on the lips as a means of apologizing.

“I seriously hate you both. Seriously,” Emma laughed. Despite her nervousness at talking to the curly haired boy, she still made her way around the counter, heading for the back of the store. Niall and Liam’s quiet catcalls followed here, causing her to blush slightly. “Hate you!” she reminded them without turning around.

“Welcome to Furs and Purs, can I help you find anything?” Emma asked the older boy.

The smaller girl turned her attention away from the pen that contained the kittens. “My brother is getting me a kitty,” the little girl squealed.

The girl’s older brother laughed at the girl and nodded. “Yeah, our mom sent me because she didn’t want to. It’s so not fair,” he joked.

“Well you’ve come to the right place,” she replied dumbly. That boy’s smile was really distracting. His laugh amazing too.

“I want a boy kitty,” the little girl stated matter-of-factly, turning her attention back to the kittens.

“Gemma, are you sure?” her brother asked, still looking at Emma. She blushed again, noting the similarity in names that she and the little girl shared. Gemma nodded at her brother’s question, but didn’t turn away from the kittens.

“Gemma is a pretty name, my name is Emma,” she told Gemma, squatting down to the little girl’s level.

“Our names rhyme,” she giggled, turning to look at Emma, her pig tails bouncing slightly. She then turned back to the pen, pulling out a fluffy orange kitten. “I like this one. Is it a boy or a girl?” she asked, nearly pushing the cat into Emma’s face.

Harry frowned at his sister’s display. “Gem, be polite. Remember to use your manners,” he scolded.

The little girl rolled her eyes at her brother, “Shut up Harry, you’re not the boss of me.”

Emma chuckled at the interactions. “Well, let me see,” she said with a smile as she gently took the little fuzz ball into her hands. She looked the kitten over before handing it back to the girl. “Boy,” she confirmed, standing up.

“She’s so cute,” Emma said, turning back to the boy.

Harry laughed and rubbed the back of his neck, “Yeah, she’s something else,” he agreed, watching his sister cuddle the kitten to her chest.

“How about you put him down and we will find him supplies then get him when we are ready to check out?” Harry suggested to his little sister.

Gemma wrinkled her nose at her brother’s suggestion and shook her head. “No, I want to hold Sherbet. What if he gets lost?” she asked, looking visibly distraught at the thought.
Harry sighed and shook his head. “Okay, then keep carrying him. It’s fine.”

Emma smiled at the little girl, “it’s okay, Gemma, you can hold him I will help Harry get this things okay?” she asked.

“I like her way better than you,” Gemma says to her brother with a triumphant grin.

Harry stuck his bottom lip out in an exaggerated pout and turned to Emma, “she’s seven; you see how she treats me? I came here to buy her a kitten and she’s mean to me, the brat,” he whines playfully.

“You seem like a really good guy,” Emma told him. Then realizing what she said, her cheeks immediately flared red. She’d meant to only say brother not guy. Niall and Liam were a bad influence on her. They openly flirted at work and now she was too.

The curly haired boy just grinned and replied, “I try,” he shrugged. At this, the teen girl blushed even harder.

“Guys, can you pay attention to me again?” Gemma demanded, stomping her foot. “Sherbet is hungry. We need to get him food and a poop box,” she told them bluntly.

“Gemma!” Harry groaned. “You’d think our mother taught her nothing.”

“It’s fine really. I’ve heard worse from those two idiots over there,” Emma told Harry, gesturing with her thumb to Liam and Niall. The boys were watching them closely from their spot at the counter. Both wore matching grins.

No other customers had come in so they had nothing better to do than be nosey.
“Well still, she’s seven. I can’t believe she says stuff like that,” Harry explained, completely embarrassed by his sister’s behavior.

“I learn it from you and Zayn and Louis,” Gemma explained with a shrug. “Now, c’mon we have to get him stuff.”

The little girl was getting impatient, but Emma was in no hurry for her and her brother to leave the store. Harry was the most gorgeous guy to ever come into the store, let alone speak to her. The best part was she felt completely comfortable around him.

“The supplies are this way,” Emma said, leading the siblings to the cat supply aisle. “Let’s start with getting him a litter box. What kind do you want?”

Gemma scratched the kitten’s ears and pondered the choices on the shelf in front of her. “I want the pink glittery one.”

“But Sherbet is a boy cat,” Harry reminded her. “How about we get him a red or green one?” he suggested.

“I want the pink glittery one,” Gemma demanded, stomping her foot again.

“I think the pink one is fantastic,” Emma agreed, smiling at Harry. Harry just groaned and shook his head, but it was his sister’s cat after all so he let it go.

“Now, we need food bowls. I bet we’ve got ones that will match this,” she said, winking at Gemma.

After they picked out the pink food bowls, they make their way around the aisles, collecting the other supplies that they need. They found everything faster than Emma would have liked, though. The next thing she knew she was checking Harry and Gemma out.

“I’m never going to see him again,” Emma whined, placing her forehead down on the counter top. “A hot guy like that never comes around twice.”

“I wouldn’t be so sure about that,” Liam replied, nudging her in the ribs gently.

When Emma looked up, Harry was back and wearing a huge grin. “Gemma sent me back in, She told me I couldn’t leave without asking for your number. And well, I agree.”

And Emma, well, she couldn’t believe her luck.
