Gokudera’s eyes are a funny colour, Tsuna thinks. They aren’t quite grey, and they aren’t quite green. They’re the colour of eucalyptus leaves and smoke; the colour of rolling green hills and little grey pebbles. They’re thin yet large, and oh-so-expressive. When they widen in anger and narrow in annoyance, when they squeeze shut in pain and pleasure, and when they get that little sparkle that lets Tsuna and Yamamoto know that their best friend is happy.

Tsuna likes the way they suit Gokudera just fine, unlike Hibari’s eyes, which Tsuna secretly thinks are just a bit too thin, not that he would tell Hibari this. He still fears him, because Hibari is Hibari and Hibari has a temper. Tsuna likes the way they make Gokudera’s face seem rough and chiselled and young and girlish and perfect. He likes the way they crinkle in the corners when Gokudera meets them in the morning, yawning sleepily and blinking blearily - usually on Monday’s. He likes the way they sparkle behind Gokudera’s glasses when they’re at school, his right-hand-man-to-be leaning over (although at first it had been get up and walk over) to help him secretly, much to their teacher’s annoyance and Nana’s joy.

He likes the way they get that little flame in them, Gokudera’s own Dying Will, one that doesn’t scream but silently says, ‘I will beat you or die trying’. He likes the way they seem to flicker as Gokudera calculates his opponent, before throwing his bombs and playing little word games in hopes of confusing the person he’s fighting against. The one he’s usually fighting against is Lambo, though, so the word games aren’t quite needed because Lambo is somewhat of an idiot.

Tsuna likes the way Gokudera’s eyes light with silent pride when he beats his enemy, especially in front of his sister or him. Tsuna knows that no matter what, Gokudera likes (he wouldn’t go so far as to say love) his sister, and he craves her approval. Tsuna of course doesn’t understand this, but he doubts he will ever properly understand Gokudera, because under that rash personality of, ‘Seek-and-Blow-Up’ there’s a complex, confused and sad child that everyone can see in those green-grey eyes.

But Tsuna likes the way that the child becomes happy when he hugs Gokudera, when he steals kisses in the corridor, when they lay in the darkness of his room, and when Tsuna sees that sad child become happy he feels as though he’ll be a good Tenth, a good boss, because he’s making his right-hand-man happy.
