"Stai bene, Fuuta?"
Fuuta fluttered his eyes open the same moment that he gasped for air, as if he was drowning in an infinite sea of despair. Dirty white surfaces welcomed his vision, temporarily blinding him as he blinked a few more times. "Dino-san," he managed to gasp as he tried to sit up but failed. Instead he raised a hand, waving it above him languidly. There was a painful throb at the side of his head. Fuuta felt dazed, weak, drained.
Dino caught his hand and gripped it as he sat down on the side of the bed. He tugged at the boy's twisted blankets, freeing the boy's limbs from the knots of cloth. Fuuta was sweating profusely, his shirt wet and his hair matted against his skin. "Are you having nightmares again?" Dino placed a hand over Fuuta's sweaty forehead. "You were screaming again." Reaching to the bedside table, Dino picked up a glass of water and urged Fuuta to drink.
Fuuta was thankful for the container pushed into his hands. His throat was parched and hurting. He gulped the content of the glass until it was no more and handed it back to his host, who was still holding one of his hands. "T-thank you, Dino-san," he rasped as he settled himself on his bed once more. "I'm sorry for bothering you in the middle of the night again." He raised a hand to his temple, trying to suppress the throbbing pain in his head.
"It's alright." Dino squeezed his hand before letting go, regarding Fuuta with a concerned look as he pulled the blankets up to the boy's chest. "I should be the one to apologize, since I can only help you this much." He swept hair off Fuuta's face and massaged the boy's temples lightly, trying to ease the ache the boy usually felt when stressed.
There was only silence as Fuuta buried himself under the blankets, letting only half of his head peer through the thick cloth. He looked around, staring at the familiar ceiling, the familiar bookshelves and windows. He felt the usual warm atmosphere of the Cavallone household sinking back into him, and he heaved a sigh. He was still here and nowhere near danger. He was safe.
Fuuta's abduction in Namimori gave him deep emotional wounds, or so Romario said. Because of that, Dino volunteered to act as a guardian for Fuuta for a while to make him forget about the recent incidents in Namimori. Sawada Tsunayoshi, who was the groomed future boss of the Vongola where Fuuta decided to affiliate with, agreed. Before Dino and Fuuta left, Tsuna profusely apologized and assured them that every thing would be alright. Fuuta left with a smile, but that was before the nightmares started visiting him.
By day, where Dino, Romario and the rest of the Cavallone castle were bustling about, Fuuta felt safe and happy. He could ignore that dangers that lurked outside the base, or the news of the escape of Rokudo Mukuro and his gang from Vendicare's jail. His ranking ability was still a bit shaky, but he could feel the power of the stars calling to him, their voices stronger by each day.
At night, however, when the castle was still and darkness filled the rooms, Fuuta would feel the shadows of his nightmares creeping up his bed, enclosing him, suffocating him. In those nightmares, he'd recall the pain, the torture, the feeling that the man who took him could peel him naked without remorse, the feeling that his very soul could be pierced by those watchful eyes. Fuuta would try to run away, but as with most nightmares, he'd trip, fall, and would be consumed by the horrors sealed in his memories.
Before his fright could kill him, however, he'd be shaken away with a voice, panicky and concerned. He would then open his eyes to find his benefactor worriedly watching him. This night was just like those ones before, and Fuuta was once again relieved to see Dino's kind eyes instead of piercing unmatched ones when he opened his own.
The silence was broken by a rustle of bedding and a creak of the bed. Dino held the blanket up and slid under it, creeping closer until he was lying on the bed with Fuuta, their legs touching. "I can't keep you sleeping alone if you continuously have nightmares like that," he said as he moved until he was lying on his side, facing the boy. He grinned, "I'm glad the bed has enough space."
"Dino-san..." Fuuta felt his hands involuntarily gripping themselves into fists. He wanted to tell the older man that he was alright, he was old enough to sleep alone, but the lurking nightmare, the faint thump of the horrors in his heart and the memory of his days in Namimori made him speechless and weak. He wondered if Dino was doing this because he thought of him as helpless kid who couldn't even control his powers. Or was it because Dino was indebted to Tsuna and wouldn't want to fall from his favor? Fuuta felt his heart speed up, although if it was because of his fears, his insecurities or his confusion, he couldn't tell.
Dino, with a rustle, raised his free arm. "Come here, Fuuta."
There were tears wanting to fall from his eyes, each drop symbolizing the suppressed emotion he sealed in him to make him appear stronger and more dependable. Fuuta felt himself creeping towards his benefactor and leaning against him, depending on another person much more. It was shameless, but Dino's arms were what he needed at the moment. He cried, his tears soaking the older man's shirt, as he emptied his heart out. He felt a large hand on his back, comfortingly rubbing him. He buried his face on Dino's shirt, sobbing until he couldn't cry anymore. Maybe after this, he'd feel better. Maybe tomorrow, he'd start having a peaceful sleep. Maybe this was all a dream, too, but Fuuta didn't care. Dream or no dream, maybe Dino could chase all the dark shadows away.
Dino patted his head and apologized again for being unable to extend any other help, but he didn't know how much Fuuta owed him -- and how much he was thankful.
"Stai bene, Fuuta?"
Fuuta fluttered his eyes open, meeting the dark eyes of his host. "Dino-san," he muttered as he sat up. He was lying in his old bed, in his old room, facing the same face who looked at him worriedly several years ago. "I'm okay. I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to sleep for a long time..."
"You were furrowing your brows while you slept, are you having nightmares again?" Dino reached out and let his hand run through Fuuta's hair. "Would you like some water?" When the younger man shook his head and declined, Dino seemed at a loss of what else he could do for him. "A-Are you hungry?"
"I am really fine," Fuuta said, smiling. It was true that he dreamt of that incident from years ago, but he was no longer scared nor shaken by it. Chrome had apologized to him a long time ago, in behalf of Mukuro. Fuuta saw no reason to not forgive the man, for he was someone the Vongola Tenth trusted. Still, the trauma remained and at odd times, he'd remember the pain and fear, just like now.
Fuuta slowly slid off the bed, picking up his clothes as he walked. "I have to return to Namimori soon," he said as he placed a leg in his pants. "I have to report the status here in Italy." He hopped around, trying to get his other foot into the other pant leg. "Hibari-san just sent word that we should go there as soon as possible. Something must have happened."
"Tell them that the Cavallone famiglia will go with the plan," Dino said as he raised himself and stood up, wrapping a blanket over himself. "We won't give in until we finish the plan." Dino walked towards the younger man and helped him button his shirt. "We won't fail Tsuna." He held Fuuta's shoulders tightly and bent down a little, fixing his eyes on the young man's own. "I won't fail you."
"Dino-san," Fuuta sighed. He smiled and reached up to touch the older man's cheek. He could still see remnants of Dino's concern for him and his nightmares, and he wanted to shake them off those wonderful eyes. They were facing a hard battle this time and he wanted Dino to depend on him -- to trust his strength.
"Don't die, Dino-san," he whispered as he placed his weight on his toes, tiptoeing until he could lightly press his lips on Dino's cheek. "If you die, you'll be ranked as one of the dumbest mafia leaders in the world."
Dino laughed and held him close, and Fuuta wished that the battle would be over soon. He still wanted to return to this castle, to sleep on the same bed, to see the same eyes watching him as he wakes up. It had been almost nine years since he was first held in Dino's arms, he did not wish this time to be their last.
As he left the room, leaving Dino who was starting to instruct his men by phone, Fuuta gripped his briefcase and strode towards the front door. Bianchi was waiting by the entrance, nodding to him as walked closer. They were to ride a helicopter to an unknown location and travel incognito from there.
Everything is alright, Fuuta thought as he boarded the helicopter. He caught a glimpse of Dino waving at him from the balcony. The helicopter took off and the cold wind whipping around swept away the warmth of Dino's embrace from before. From here on will be harsh, but Fuuta knew that everything was alright.
They had to make it alright. They had to realize their dream of being free from this cruelty, from this nightmare.
Dream or no dream, Fuuta will erase all the dark shadows in their tread, and go back to the man who held him tightly and loved him through all these years.
.end.
...FFFFFFF. DYING. It was honestly harder than Fuuta/Xanxus.
