Gokudera Hayato knew that soon, he would wake up from this long, enchanting dream. But he still did not want to let go. He wanted to cherish this moment, forever enveloped in surreal warmth. He reached out, trying to grasp the dream with his fingers, clasping it next to his heart where it couldn't escape -- where it would stay with him forever...
Gokudera slowly fluttered his eyes open, only to blink them sleepily as he got used to the bright morning sunshine greeting him. The surface he was lying on was rough, pebbles marking his back with their shapes. The thick cloth and blanket they managed to borrow from the villagers a way back from the forest were no match against the cold night and hard ground. He stretched his arms, but not before finding out that he was possessively clasping the blanket tightly to his chest. Sighing, he dutifully folded the blanket and the thick cloth which served as the bed.
Last night, emotions overflowed. The boss was very lonely, pining for the usual group he met every day. Their comrades were not with them, some were left in Japan, some were in different missions, and the boss did not know where they were or how they were doing. The stress of their mission and the weight of responsibility showed the boss haunting horrors that he sat up on his bed, shoulders shaking as he brought his knees to his chest in pained silence.
Gokudera took the boss in his arms and held him tightly. He covered both their bodies with the blanket, biting his lower lip as the boss snuggled to him for warmth and comfort. He watched the boss sleep, smoothing his brow, running fingers through his hair and making sure he wasn't having any bad dreams. The boss slept, murmuring the famiglia members' names as he looped his arm around Gokudera's waist.
Once or twice during the length of the darkness, Gokudera stopped resisting and pulled the boss closer, his hand on his back and his face against the boss' neck. He murmured the boss' name once and he was rewarded with a sleepy "Gokudera-kun" as the boss clung to him.
But just like any wonderful dream, that scene was supposed to end, and Gokudera was left with no choice but to let go of the warmth in his arms that gave him utmost pleasure.
He looked around. There was not a person to be seen. There was no familiar noise anywhere. It was as if he was alone in this vast paradise, left to survive on his own. He stood up, a little panicked. It took him quite some time to trace a familiar sound -- a voice -- coming from the river. He hurriedly sprinted to where the river noisily gurgled and found his companion there.
Sawada Tsunayoshi, his boss, stood in waist-deep water. The voice from earlier was his little shriek when he probably found the water to be very cold. He was naked, his shoulders shaking as he bent down to wash his face. His back glistened when the sun shone on the drops of water sliding profusely down it. For a moment, he dove under the water, trying to wash his hair. When he stood up again, he shook his head, sending minute droplets showering around him.
Gokudera found the boss' clothes hanging on a tree branch. He wanted to collect those clothes and stand on the shore to wait for his boss. As he started to move, however, he found himself entranced by the little scene. Instead of calling out to his boss, Gokudera leaned against the tree where the clothes hung. He watched, unseen as he stood in the shadows, as his boss clumsily tried to take a proper bath.
Watching the boss bathe reminded Gokudera of the woodcutter who secretly watched swan maidens. He could almost understand how the woodcutter felt when he stole the swan's feathery cloaks. Mesmerized, unrestrained and wanting, he almost wanted to do what the woodcutter did: to trick the beautiful swan into living with him forever. He toyed with the idea for some minutes, surprised at the way his own mind works. Not wanting to lose control in the middle of an important journey, he shook his head, looking up just in time to see his boss approach the river bank for his clothes.
The boss was just like a swan, Gokudera thought. He's seemingly frail, almost fragile. He's territorial and would fight anyone who dared cross his boundaries. He's graceful in his own way, even when his back was stretched to reach his clothes from the branch. His power -- his wings -- encompassed everyone around him, protecting and nurturing them.
Sawada Tsunayoshi was a swan, and Gokudera wanted to have him, to possess him, to keep the ethereal beauty all to himself.
"Boss, what will you do once we finish this mission?" Gokudera dared ask as they headed back to where they camped. He silently wished that this would be another dream, but the drops of water falling to his arm from the boss' hair was reality enough.
The boss smiled to himself, cherishing the thought of seeing the mission's end. "Well, for starters, I'll go back to the people I love." He gave Gokudera one of his boyish grins before walking ahead, hands at the back of his head.
Slowly, Gokudera murmured in his mind. He must move slowly to capture the swan, but his instincts of need were faster than his thoughts.
"Why can't you just stay," he blurted out, blood rushing to his face, "with the person who loves you the most?"
The boss stopped walking. Slowly, he turned around. His face was of surprise and other things Gokudera could not interpret and would not want to know. He wanted to apologize for the sudden question, but he was silenced when the boss spoke.
"Gokudera-kun..." the boss softly said, his voice merely a whisper. He smiled, mixed emotions clouding his eyes, as he reached out to Gokudera with his hand.
The woods was silent, with only the rustle of leaves on the trees interrupting the cruel calmness. Yet, Gokudera thought he heard a sudden rush of wings.
The swan must have taken flight.
And Gokudera flew with him.
It wasn't a dream.
