Summary: Sometimes, what is ‘ideal’ is not what you ‘like.’
Everyone has that certain ‘someone’ he or she is aiming for: an ideal person. The traits of that ideal person may be just one or maybe many, if the person who wanted that person is finicky. Shirota is one of those persons who only looks for a few things in finding his ideal person.
Shirota Yuu watches the other actors play a stupid children’s game. A while ago, the guys were talking about ideal girls, and until now, Shirota is still thinking of what he is looking for in a love partner anyway. As he thinks, he accidentally lays his eyes on Aiba Hiroki, a fellow actor, and his current love interest. He knows Aiba likes him, too, but Aiba doesn’t want to show it to anyone, even though all of them know already (Shirota had told them about 2 hours after Aiba agreed to kiss him). As he watches Aiba pout in annoyance after losing another janken, he thinks of a list of characteristics he is looking for in a lifetime partner.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. He likes a cheerful person, one who always smiles.
“Thanks,” Shirota told the usher. He silently slid into the room, nervous with all the eyes staring at him.
“Everyone, this is the one who will play Tezuka Kunimitsu, Shirota Yuu.” The other actors nodded in greeting and talked to him briefly. Soon, he was left alone again save for Zukki, who was sitting next to him and talking to him idly.
He watched his future co-actors quietly, wondering how they could all get along. Some of them were really rowdy, some of them were like anti-socials. His tohughts were interrupted, though, as a little group came up to him. They all were unfamiliar faces.
“Hi, we decided to come up and say hello, since you’ll be our buchou.” The one who spoke laughed and held out his hand. “Kotani Yoshikazu.” Shirota grinned and took the hand. He was introduced to the others, who were Kujirai and Aiba. Out of all of them, though, it was Aiba who got Shirota’s attention the most.
Even after they left, Shirota was still following Aiba with his eyes. He was such a jolly fellow, acting all comfortable with the others even though this was their first day. He had such a wide, boyish smile, you’d also feel happy watching him. When he laughs, he lets out a breathy, humming chuckle that made Shirota smile. When Aiba saw Shirota looking at them, he gestured with his head and hand, inviting him over with a wide smile. The crooked teeth did not even matter.
As Shirota got up to happily join the trio, he decided he’d win that smile for himself.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. He likes someone who is honest.
Aiba sputtered water all over his jacket. Fumbling for a hanky in his jeans pocket, he stared at Shirota. “Wh-what?”
“I said I like you.” Shirota repeated, his eyes never wavering. After all those months of stalking Aiba and even meeting his parents, Shirota decided to let the cat out of the bag and admit his feelings. He waited until everyone had left for lunch. “You...you like me, right?”
“O-O-O-Of course not!” Aiba said, his water bottle still poised on his lips as if he was drinking. “I...I never ever felt anything for you.”
“Aiba-chan.”
“What?”
“Don’t do that with the water bottle. It looks so sexy I think I’ll die.”
Aiba slammed the bottle on the table and got up from his chair. “You...You mind your own business!” As the younger man stomped out of the room, Shirota chuckled. Aiba had a way of escaping questions, but his face was the next thing to transparent. He was unable to keep his emotions hidden. The moment Shirota asked him if he had feelings for the older guy, blood quickly rose to Aiba’s cheeks, his eyes looked to their left, and his fingers shook.
Aiba’s body talked loudly than his words, and Shirota, now sure of Aiba’s feelings for him, made sure he’d make Aiba admit his affection towards him soon. For now though, tormenting would be fun.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. He likes someone who is straightforward.
“Aiba-chan, stop dancing around the issue!” Shirota whined. Lately, he’d been getting more pouty and whiny than ever, and this he blamed on Aiba. The young man still hadn’t returned his affection in words ever since he confessed. Sure, he agreed to go out with Shirota, agreed to kiss him, and agreed to stay in his house overnight even after knowing the consequences of the overnight, but he never said he liked Shirota or even wrote or even mouthed the words. Shirota knew he was just being stupid, but he needed an assurance, like a contract of words that Aiba really liked him and it wasn’t just because he kissed so wonderfully Aiba couldn’t let go when they started.
Aiba was reading a magazine while lying down on Shirota’s couch. “Dancing around what?” he asked, calmly chewing on a chocolate bar.
“Tell me you love me back!” Shirota demanded as he sat down beside the younger boy. Aiba frowned at him. “Come on, it’s just three words.”
“Shirota-san, I’ve slept with you four times this month, we kiss every night before we go home and we say good night to each other every night.” Aiba flung the magazine on the table and concentrated on chewing on his chocolate.
Shirota pouted and tugged at the cover of his couch. “But I wanna hear it. I always tell you how wonderful you are and how you’re so great a kisser and how you smell like curry when we go out, but you, you never tell me anything! The only affirmative stuff that I heard from you were your moans when I went...” Aiba’s glare stopped him from continuing.
”What? Should I tell you that you’re so my ideal guy and that you’re so marvelous I want to be kissy-feely with you now?” Aiba bit on the chocolate bar, vexed.
Shirota nodded. “Yes, of course!”
Aiba sighed and picked his coat up, which was hanging at the couch’s armrest. “I should be going or I’ll be late for tomorrow’s event.” He stood up and put his coat on.
“Ehh?? Wait! You haven’t...” Shirota kept quiet when Aiba held up a hand. “But...”
“Sssh!” Aiba went closer on tiptoes, aiming for a kiss. Shirota indulged in the kiss, and he was surprised when Aiba took the initiative and slipped his tongue in Shirota’s mouth, sliding it lazily against Shirota’s own. The taste of chocolate plus Aiba’s own flooded Shirota’s senses that he did not notice when Aiba pulled away.
Aiba smiled at patted Shirota’s cheek. “There you go. Goodnight.” With a last smile and hug, Aiba left Shirota’s apartment, leaving the older man blinking hazily.
When Shirota got back from choco + Aiba world to the real world, he was furious. “Ahhh!!! Aiba-chan, you tricked me again!” Looks liek he won’t get any fluffy words out of Aiba’s mouth soon.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. He likes someone who has more concern over others than her/himself.
Aiba looked at the clock. “Can’t we begin eating?”
Zukki was checking his cellphone. “Nope. Not yet. Shirotan’s still on the way. We have to wait for him.”
Aiba nodded and sucked on a piece of candy, watching TV. He checked his blog using his cellphone and was quiet for about five minutes.
“Can’t we begin eating?” Zukki and Adachi looked at him sternly, but Aiba pouted and made puppy-eyes at them. “I’m hungry.”
“Aibacchi...”
“I’m really hungry. Who knows, maybe Shirota-san has already eaten,” Aiba said, playing with his chopsticks. “Ne, I can’t wait anymore?”
After much convincing and denying and arguing, Zukki finally decided they should eat. He just set aside some of the food for Shirota to eat in case he came home hungry.
When Shirota came home, he discovered with much disappointment that they hadn’t waited for him and that they ate already. Worse, Aiba already ate his share.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. He likes someone who can cook.
”Shirotan, are you sure it’s okay to come over?”
“Yup, come on over,” Shirota told Zukki over the phone. “Aiba’s trying to cook udon all by himself, so it will be exciting. I want you guys to sample it!” He paused by a stair rail to fix the things he was carrying.
Zukki seemed hesitant. ”I...uh...Adaachin and I will just skip...”
“No way! I won’t accept a no! This is the first time Aiba had tried cooking so I want to celebrate this wonderful occasion with everyone!” He hung up and busied himself with opening the door. Grinning, he opened the front door. “Aibacc...”
A sudden explosion made him drop all his groceries and run to the kitchen. Dark clouds of smoke covered the whole area, as if someone stepped on a mine in a battlefield. As Shirota waved the smoke away, he called for Aiba.
When the smoke cleared, he found Aiba by the sink, holding an eggbeater. His hair was standing on end and covered with what seemed to be remnants of flour and eggs. His apron was tattered, the edges burned a little. His face was covered with both flour and soot.
Aiba looked up to see Shirota standing at the edge of the kitchen. “Uh...I...think I overcooked it?” When Shirota sighed, Aiba looked around and saw the disaster he had made. Teary-eyed, he approached Shirota and tugged at his sleeve. “So-sorry...”
Shirota patted Aiba’s head and hugged him, flour, soot and all. “It’s okay, Aiba-chan.” Shirota felt Aiba’s shoulders slump a little. He must be really disappointed. Shirota hugged the younger boy tightly and kissed his forehead. “I swear, it’s okay. It usually happens when one cooks for the first time anyway,” he said to comfort Aiba, even though when he had his cooking lessons when he was a kid, that worst thing he did was making soup too salty and breaking a saucer.
Shirota took out his cellphone and decided to call not only Zukki but everyone in Seigaku. He needed a lot of help to clean the place.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shirota bites his lip as he remembers all those events. Looks like Aiba only fits the first characteristic. That guy has absolutely no talent in being frank, in faking an emotion, in seducing (well, he sometimes can, but those times are accidental), in showing his affection for Shirota in public, and in cooking.
“Is something wrong?” Aiba asks Shirota as he approaches the older guy. Sitting beside Shirota, he stretched his legs. “What are you thinking?”
“Nothing much.” Shirota scoots closer to Aiba and holds the boy’s head, letting him rest his head on his shoulder. “I really like you a lot, Aiba-chan.”
“I like Shirota-san a lot, too...but don’t tell anyone or I’ll smack you.”
“Yes, yes...”
Shirota grins. Sure, Aiba might not fit any of his categories except one before. But he learns and will continue to learn. Plus, the important thing is not about liking ideals. It’s about liking a person.
