Ahh, the end of summer, or in the case of Los Angeles, the beginning. You see summer hasn't really hit us here yet. We've had one or two days of 90+ temperatures but that's it. So it feels a bit odd to be doing my annual "fall television billboards have taken over my neighborhood" post, but here it is nonetheless.
Once again, this is because I've heard through the family and friend grapevine that sadly, television advertising does not in fact take over every bus shelter, billboard and building in other cities.
As always you can click multiple times on any of the pictures to make them bigger.
No Ordinary Family
Tag: New Powers. Instructions Not Included.; Faster Than a Speeding Minivan
I say: Love these ads! They say exactly what the show is about and use comic book typesetting - yay fun!
Nikita
Tag: Looks Do Kill
I say: Apparently Nikita is sultry, and can kill you. And she likes red. And guns.
Lonestar
Tag: One Man. Two Lives. The Perfect Con.
I Say: Yow! I don't know who the guy is but he looks hot. I like fact that the shot is almost exactly the same, so we get to pay attention to things like the different headboards, his clothes being different, one of the ladies has a wedding ring, etc. It's one of those "what is different in this picture?" puzzle games, which is spot-on for the show.
Running Wilde
Tag: Ego Meets Eco.
I Say: Will Arnett and Keri Russell! Champagne glass vs. Recycle bottle. Could it be that opposites attract? And romantic shenanigans will ensue?! Oh, show.
Hellcats
Tag: Being Here Doesn't Mean You Belong
I Say: Cheerleaders being bitchy is all I get from this ad. I suppose in the land 'o CW, that's all I need to. Catfight! Or should I say Hellcatfight!?
Raising Hope
Tag:
I Say: Graphically I really like style of this ad, with all the negative space. Plus, the milk bottle beer hat really conveys the point.
Big Bang Theory
Tag: New Night. New Time. Same Theory.
I Say: Not a new show, but CBS is really trying to make sure we know it's moving. Look, they're in packing peanuts!
My Generation
Tag: I should have said yes that night; I never lied to you. Except for that one night.; Dumping you was the biggest mistake of my life; When I'm with him, I'm thinking of you, etc.
I Say: I'm actually very intrigued by the concept of the show, but if I didn't know what it was already I don't think this works. If there's anyone reading who doesn't know about the show's concept, let me know if I'm right or wrong.
The Defenders
Tag: In Vegas, even Justice is hot.
I Say: Pretty clever - Justice as Vegas showgirl. And Jim and Jerry in suits, so I think it successfully conveys what the show is about - lawyers in Vegas!
Blue Bloods
Tag: Honor. Justice. Family. It's in their blood.
I Say: This is a very traditional ad for what I think is going to be a very traditional show. And I mean this in the best possible way. I like how the gun becomes a building on the skyline.
Mike & Molly
Tag:
I Say: Sookie St. James! {this character reference brought to you by Gilmore Girls} Thank god they didn't make the tag a fat joke.
Hawaii Five-0
Tag:
I Say: Alex! Daniel! Grace! Scott! Crashing surf!
Cue the theme music.
Glee
Tag: Gleek Out!
I Say: Look how far we've come Gleeks! Ugh, did I get slushie in my face? "Someone get me to a day spa, stat!" - Future Emmy-winner Chris Colfer
S#*! my dad says
Tag: Mouthing off every Thursday
I Say: Really, we can't say shit? Really? Anyway, Shatner is the selling point of this show/twitter feed turned sitcom, so this billboard is doing it right.
Boardwalk Empire
Tag: Atlantic City, 1920. When alcohol was outlawed, outlaws became kings.
I Say: Way too much going on with the type, so the awesome tag that explains the show gets lost. That being said, HBO drama viewers aren't usually gained by bus stop ads, if I had to guess.
