This Saturday night I had the pleasure of attending my first Paley event of the season in its new home at the Cinerama Dome. I have many fond memories of Paley Fest at the DGA, like when I almost hit Micheal Vartan with my car after the Alias panel, or when I first laid first person eyes on my man Topher at the That 70s Show panel, alas the DGA venue is no more. Loyal blog readers will note that I spoke of the Mad Men panel I went to last year, but that was at the Museum itself in a theater that seats maybe 100, PaleyFest is now at this HUGE theater that seats at least 500 (I'm so bad with numbers, it's probably more like 1,000, who knows). This year's pre-show entertainment involved me parking next to Dominic Monaghan in the parking structure. Hobbit sighting!
So, on to tonight's
Pushing Daisies (PD from now on) panel! Pie for everyone!
Before each Paley night they show a video clip from the Museum archives that relates to that nights' show. It's one of my fav little bits of the evening, like when they showed a Route 66 clip before last years' Supernatural night. Anyways, for PD they showed a hilarious bit from Wonderfalls, I started clapping as soon as I saw the cow creamer. Aaron and Majandra were my fav characters on that show. ANYway...highlights from the Q&A
:
• Everyone LOVES ABC, they want to marry ABC and have half-ABC, half-human babies. They have just "gotten" the show since the pitch (they were looking for an Amelie-esque tv show) and have been supportive through advertising, moolah, letting them do what they want, etc.
• Why is Ned a pie maker? Simple - Bryan Fuller loves pie (esp. apple) and he put all things he loves (honey, bees, dogs) in the pilot
• Chi McBride is the biggest ham ever, but very funny I will admit, I cannot even remember 1/2 of what he said, but it was pretty much all hilarious
• Mr. Lee Pace, Klein HS graduate, is indeed as humble and softspoken as every interview I've seen would indicate. He blushes SO easily - it's very adorable
• They pointed out the production designer and costume designer in the crowd and they got the big ups from the cast and audience that they deserve. The costume designer apparently worked on Star Trek for like 15 years and came out of retirement to do PD
• KC is a complete klutz and she did the whole "Girth" ep with a broken ribs and while taking many, many drugs (Fuller: "her best work!")
• The producers said Lee was their first choice for Ned, they didn't even test anyone else
• Mr. Lee Pace, Klein HS graduate, said he wasn't looking to do television but reading the pilot made him feel happy and how often does tv or film just make you happy? {Ed note: true that, Lee, true indeed}
• Ellen Green was just so lovely and well-spoken and she said everyone thought she was dead, but as she auditioned she just felt loved by the room, and she googled everyone that was involved in the project and felt even better as she saw they were all people who made art and cared about art, so the show is a good blend of art and commercialism
• Darling British Anna was not quite sure about moving her family away from her home country and all that, but she said it was the best decision she's made in her life. She was so cute when she was talking about how she's shooting a movie at Universal now and she's so used to turning right on Barham to go to Warner Brothers, but now she has to go by it and turn the other way to go to Universal and she waves and says "goodbye, my Daises"
(Non-Angeleno explanation: the WB and Universal lots are essentially off the same street, just about 2 miles from each other)
Their favorite moments from mini-season 1:
Lee: they shot the "hand holding" scene from the pilot at the end of the last day and he remembers looking at Anna and doing the scene and thinking "please let this {the show} go, please"
Anna: scene where the DMD get back in the water and swim for the first time (her daughter has watched this scene 69 times, yes, she said 69)
Chi: scene with KC in the mausoleum when they're trying to pry open the coffin. He really loves it when he just gets to react to people but doesn't have dialogue
Kristin: ack, I don't remember hers...
Overall, the cast seemed to get along swimmingly and really appreciated each other and being on the show. I've been to Paleys where the cast did not have much rapport at all, so it's nice when they do, like tonight!
