Queensland and Surrogacy

So Queensland is very close to passing altruistic surrogacy laws that would allow gay and lesbian couples, and single people as well as heterosexual couples to access or offer altruistic surrogacy and adoption.

These laws are nothing new. These laws bring us in line with the rest of Australia, because we are currently a ridiculous state who are ( Read more... )

I actually give a lot of props to the tax law changes, because it's a BIG change. It allows gay couples to access things like the couples/family limit to the medicare levy surcharge (so that if one partner earns a lot, and the other not much, they can avoid the surcharge, etc).

But it's still only one piece, as you say. They can get good tax rights while they LIVE, but not once they die... that sorta thing.

I think a big problem at the moment is that the church is yelling loud, simple statements, and no one is yelling back. The people in power, the politicians, they hear the church and they baulk, they fear to fight. the church is yelling loud, simple messages, and the masses hear these messages and go 'oh, okay...that's what I think then'.

Someone who stands up needs to be someone in power. A visible politician, someone huge with a voice that reaches millions - but that someone needs to STAND UP. We've got it backwards. We say 'oh, well the people think this way - we can't be too 'activist' about it or they'll turf us out!' but they people only think this way because they haven't been told any other way to think.

Someone visible needs to stand up and say 'THIS IS HOW YOU NEED TO THINK'. And they need to yell it louder than the church. It's not about waiting for the masses, it's about MAKING the masses.

There's a scene in The West Wing - the chief of staff comments 'I don't understand why democrats won't join the NRA (National Rifle Association). Just think - they have 500 people in a meeting. You bring along 600 people, and you make a motion - 'ban all guns, destroy the lot of them'. Then no more guns.'

Don't run away from the attack - push right back. Is what I think. It's just too bad that even the less conservative of our political parties is too far towards the right to even consider standing up.
