csifreak90 Samantha wakes up first. She’s no more tired than usual but much less eager to get out of bed. With the palm of Lindsay’s hand and those long delicate fingers resting on her bare stomach, there’s really nowhere else she’d rather be.
But alas, all good things must - and do - come to an end. Samantha’s Blackberry buzzes on the table next to Lindsay. She reaches over top of the sleeping girl, resting against warm skin as she picks up her phone. All that effort for a text message.
“It’s Nic. Can you watch the baby? Call me when you get this!” the message reads. Samantha rests her heavy head on the back of Lindsay’s shoulder and sighs. She has no idea how to look after a baby but she can’t say no when a friend needs a favour. Besides, she’ll have Lindsay’s maternal instincts to help her out.
She calls Nicole back and agrees to take the baby for the day.
“You’re a lifesaver. Harlow’s doing a shoot for toddler DCMA and Joel’s got band practice. I’ll bring him by soon.”
After setting her phone back on the table, Samantha kisses Lindsay’s shoulder and down her back, all the way to her la bella vita tattoo. The girl begins to stir.
“Mmm…what time is it?” Lindsay asks groggily. She rolls over onto her back and faces Samantha.
“Just after 9. You sleep okay?” Samantha asks, brushing her fingertips across the girl’s cheek, red and creased from sleeping on it.
“Shit, I have to be at work in half an hour.” Lindsay jumps from the bed as though it were on fire and runs frantically around the room looking for something to wear. Realizing she arrived last night in a dress, she improvises.
“What? No you can’t,” Samantha insists.
“Samantha, I have to. Today is when they’re shooting all of my promotional scenes.” Lindsay pulls on a pair of Samantha’s jeans and one of the woman’s comfy t-shirts. “You can come hang out on my lunch though.”
“I told Nic I’d babysit. You can’t go anywhere,” Samantha says, feeling suddenly panic-stricken. What could she possibly do all day with a baby? Her mother and Charlotte had gone already to a shop opening and most of her other friends would already be at work.
“Aww, the little guy? You’ll have to bring him to see me at work.”
“I don’t even know how to hold a baby. I haven’t changed a diaper in years.” Samantha crawls across the bed as Lindsay hands her a clean t-shirt. She wraps her arms tightly around the girl’s waist, holding on for dear life.
Lindsay peels the woman’s arms away and grabs her firmly by the face. She plants a gentle kiss on her lips. “You’ll be just fine, auntie Samantha.” Grinning, she hightails it out to her car and speeds off to work.
Samantha pulls the t-shirt over her head and tugs on a pair of casual black capris before flopping back onto the bed. She wants to scream at her inability to say no to a friend in need.
Cadillac barks upon hearing a knock at the door; Nicole!
Samantha rushes to the door, panicking again on her way, realizing that her house is not equipped or particularly safe for a baby.
She opens the door to find Nicole with her arms full. The woman hugs Samantha, passing her the baby in his car seat and several bags full of his things. “I owe you big time! Thank you.”
Before Samantha has a chance to even say a word, Nicole has rushed back to her SUV and jumped in. “You’re welcome,” the DJ says to no one but herself.
She carries the baby seat inside, careful not to jar the sleeping child. As long as he’s sleeping, my job is easy, Samantha thinks.
She watches the little boy’s serene expression. Cadillac joins her and they admire his tiny features. “Well, what do you think Caddy? Can we handle this?’’
Cadillac jumps onto her hind legs, landing her front paws on Samantha’s lap. She licks the woman’s face happily. “I guess that’s a yes.” The dog barks as she jumps down and accidentally bumps the seat. And the screaming begins.
Samantha rocks the seat back and forth, “shh”ing the baby and trying to calm him down. He stops finally but his quivering chin tells Samantha it won’t last long. “Come on little buddy. Gotta work with me here. I’ve never done this before.”
The baby watches her intently as she speaks. Not knowing what else to do, Samantha digs into one of the bags to find a toy - anything to keep the little one occupied. The first thing the finds is a plush car - complete with a cartoon face and engine sounds.
“How about a car ride?” Samantha says, that metaphorical light bulb coming on inside her head. She squeezes the toy so that it makes a noise. The baby lets out an irresistible giggle and Samantha feels her heart melt.
Once the baby seat is strapped securely in the backseat of Samantha’s 4-door Cadillac, she drives carefully around her neighbourhood, constantly checking the backseat to make sure the baby is okay. She plays Slash’s solo album quietly on the stereo; eventually this lulls the baby to sleep.
When her phone rings, she answers it quickly and whispers ‘hello’.
“Hi babe. Why are we whispering?” Lindsay responds, quietly also.
“The baby’s sleeping. What’s up?”
“Awww. I’m on lunch soon. Come see me!” Lindsay says and hangs up.
Samantha drives around a little while longer before heading to the studio where Lindsay is filming. She parks close to the gate and texts the girl to let her know she has arrived.
Lindsay joins her shortly still wearing the clothes she borrowed that morning. She kisses Samantha quickly before opening the car door to get a peek at the sleeping baby.
She unbuckles him from his seat and lifts him, still asleep, into her arms. His tiny head rests against her chest; Samantha feels an uncomfortable lump form in her throat as the girl rocks back and forth, cooing at the baby.
“What’s his name?” Lindsay asks, watching as the baby slowly opens his eyes to look up at her.
“Attikus,” Samantha reaches out toward the baby. He takes hold of two of her fingers in one of his soft hands. She smiles and watches him stare curiously up at Lindsay. “You look good with a baby, by the way.”
Lindsay laughs, kissing the baby’s soft head. She hands him off to Samantha who holds him awkwardly at first. Lindsay helps her to readjust her arms and the baby’s body into a more comfortable position. The baby maintains a tight grip on Samantha’s fingers and smiles, gurgling a laugh.
“So do you,” Lindsay says, smiling. Samantha looks up to find the girl snapping a picture of the scene with her phone.
“Have you eaten yet?” Samantha asks Lindsay, lifting the baby’s face closer to her own. She kisses his tiny nose and he sneezes.
“No. But I’ll grab you something too,” Lindsay says. She is reluctant to walk away having never seen Samantha glow like she is now, with baby Attikus in her arms.
As Lindsay walks away, a group of chattering crewmembers walk past Samantha. A few of them stop to fawn over Attikus. “Your baby is gorgeous,” one woman says and continues walking.
“Oh, he’s not-“ Samantha begins but the woman isn’t listening. She laughs to herself and nuzzles the little one into her chest. “You are a pretty handsome dude. You’ll be breaking hearts before we know it.”
Samantha grabs a bottle from one of the bags in the car and begins to feed the baby. He watches her unwaveringly the entire time.
“I told you that you’d be fine. You’re a natural,” Lindsay says, returning with two Styrofoam containers of food. Samantha blushes and finishes feeding the baby. He falls asleep instantly after being burped and snuggled carefully back into his car seat.
Lindsay sits on the trunk of Samantha’s car to eat while the woman leans against the bumper.
“Not as scary as you thought, huh?” Lindsay asks between bites. Samantha shakes her head and thinks back to the crewmember’s comment. As a kid, when she imagined being in her 30s, she always expected to already have kids. Suddenly, that biological clock seems to be ticking double-time.
“You ever thought about having a baby?” Samantha asks, quietly.
“Absolutely. I’d love to have kids,” Lindsay says, jumping down from her seat on the trunk to throw out her garbage.
“With me?” Samantha asks, meeting the girl’s eyes as she returns to the car.
Lindsay chuckles and smiles. “Of course with you, wifey,” the girl teases. She leans her hips against Samantha’s. “How about you?” She places her palms flat on the woman’s stomach and rubs gently. Samantha sets her own hands on top of Lindsay’s and smiles.
She nods and looks down at the hands on her stomach. “Yeah, I think we’d be great mommies.”
