In William Goldings “The Lord of the Flies” there is a lot of symbolism shown throughout the story. The conch shell, the scar, and a character name piggy each represent there own symbolism. They each have an effect on a story, and show many different things. The symbolism effects the outcome of the story and how each character looks at the objects being symbolized

First off the island was untouched no people lived on it and it looked pretty peaceful. Then when the boys landed on it they made a giant scar in the island. “All around him the long scar smashed into the jungle like a bath of heat” pg 7. I think this represents a chain reaction of how much destruction and change the island is about to go through. Ralph the leader of the boys observed the scar “ he looked up and down the scar” pg 8 little does he know that this is a begging of an end of a peaceful island.

Next there is a character named Piggy who is a good friend of Ralph’s. He tries to keep order throught the novel and just wants everything to be ok. I think he symbolizes a mother that no one listens to. “ A fire, Make a fire” pg 38, also “ We need shelters” pg 51. He constantly is nervous and dosent want things to get out of hand. Unfortunatley he is killed bye a group of misguided kids on the island and that’s exactly what he was trying to stop. He was trying to stop things from turning into chaos.

Last there is this thing called the conch shell. It represents law and order. Whoever has it is only allowed to speak. “only the person who holds the conch may speak” pg 8. It is also used as a whistle or to let people know when they are needed. Whenever the conch is blown everyone is supposed to come to the clearing. “ we can use this to call other. Have a meeting. They’ll come when they hear us” pg 16. The leader was the one who possed the conch mostly. Unless someone else wanted to speak then it would be passed on. “we have rules he cried. Ill give the conch to the next person to speak” pg 33.

All in all these three things play a major part of symbolism throughout the novel. It lets us understand what they mean a little better in more than one way. The author purposely used a lot of symbolism just to make us understand the story a little bit more. If it wasn’t for symbolism then we all might be confused, and never understand the meaning of things.
