Sehun makes a deliberate attempt to look over the heads of the couple sitting across from him, cup of tea-or is it coffee? He can’t remember, hasn’t had a sip since it was pushed into his hands-growing cold. He hates this, hates these meetings, and hates the fact that he doesn’t know what’s going on.
“Sehun,” the woman begins, voice chipper and cup that she places back on the table empty, “darling, your father and I have some delightful news for you.”
The man beside her grumbles in agreement, gaze solely on his phone.
“Oh, alright then, I’ll tell him.” She folds her hands in her lap, the image of satisfaction and Sehun can almost picture a smug housecat in her place-he’s trying to, anything to take his mind off the obnoxious pleasure rolling off the omega. Instead of making him feel better, it puts him on edge, though he at least tries to contain the feeling so that not everyone within a mile radius will be able to catch it.
“Mother?” Sehun prompts.
“We have given careful thought to your,” she clears her throat delicately, “rather childish demands of putting off the inevitable.” She harrumphs, clearly put off. “I mean, Sehun, you are in your prime! When I was your age your father and I were already married, my heats taken care of-” Sehun’s father starts at that, but his mother is either unaware or uncaring. “I mean honestly, Sehun, I understand why you may wish to pursue an education-it is the latest fad to possess a Master’s, I’ve heard-but it is foolish and your father and I have had enough! We’ve decided it’s high time you settled down.”
Sehun resists the urge to roll his eyes. Ah yes, the usual talk. As an omega, it is your right to provide us with grandchildren. He’s heard it a million times. But this is fine. They’ll just hit him with the usual blind date and he can talk about babies until the guy-they used to be girls but his parents caught on-freaks out and leaves. Then he can head back to his apartment and give his studies the attention his mother believes his search for a mate deserves.
“So, we’ve signed you up for speed dating.”
Sehun starts. “What?”
--
“A respectable establishment,” Sehun mutters to himself, “an enrollment that included many fine, purebred alphas,” he mocks in a high-pitched tone, imitating his mother.
The building in front of him is indeed a fine establishment; a five-star restaurant in the middle of the city rented out today in order to match up the daughters and sons of rich, purebred alphas and omegas. Sehun thinks that the whole thing is a huge waste of time, a last-ditch attempt for stressed, overly eager parents to find mates for their troublesome progeny. Sehun grudgingly admits that he fits the bill. And, considering his mother will have his head if he doesn’t make an appearance, he’d best comply. Sehun pushes open the large front doors and steps inside.
The inside is just as lavish, if not more than the polished marble exterior. Dark, deep red wallpaper would make the interior impossible to see, if not for the strategically placed crystal lamps placed throughout the venue and despite himself, Sehun feels himself relax slightly. The darkness gives a sense of privacy, probably the best thing to calm frightened omegas. He strides forward, around the corner where he can see people gathered.
His lip curls in disgust before he can help himself. Too-tall, over-beefed alphas line the walls of the room, talking amongst themselves and laughing loudly. He searches for the omegas and spots them all in the corner, talking quietly and hunched in on themselves, only a few holding their chins high-though it’s clear that it’s a challenge. Sehun sneers at the floor so no one can catch him. He’s always hated biology.
“Hello, Sir! Have you checked in yet?”
Sehun’s head snaps to the left, where a small man is standing, holding a black folder. He gives the man a quick once-over; he’s short-probably close to average height but anyone below six foot is short to Sehun (despite his mother’s desperate wishes for him to be a small, delicate omega like her. She’d practically rejoiced the day he gave up his heavier workouts, thankful that her too-tall son at least would stay lean and waify. Perfect for an omega.) The small man is wearing a suit, though it’s obviously older and ill-fitted. Hair parted and coiffed, he gives off a calming aura, smile not too big and stance serving to make him look smaller. Sehun frowns and leans in only slightly to get a scent from the man. He pulls back almost immediately, a small smile on his lips. Ah. Beta.
“We’re only waiting on two, so you must be,” he pauses, gives Sehun a cursory look, gaze not lingering long enough to be flirtatious, much to Sehun’s chagrin. “Oh Sehun, right?”
“Correct,” he murmurs, taking the offered pen and signing beside his name. “And who are you?”
The man jolts slightly, as if surprised to be addressed. “Me?”
Sehun’s lips pull up. He can’t help it. “Yes, you.”
The beta quickly straightens, taking back the pen that Sehun hands out and donning a polite, business smile. Sehun frowns. “My name is Kim Minseok, and I will be in charge of the proceedings this evening. We will begin in five minutes, so please feel free to survey the area and make yourself comfortable.” He goes back to looking at his folder before Sehun can so much as smile.
“Kim Minseok,” Sehun says, trying not to let his irritation to show in his voice. The man looks up, expression slightly bewildered and his soothing scent flares in response to Sehun’s poorly concealed distress, and the omega allows himself to relax. It’s nice, he muses, to know if necessary he can turn to the beta in the middle of this and receive the same pacifying pheromones which are likely permeating the air for the benefit of all gathered in the room. It’s a nice change to his blind dates, where he’s forced to sit still as he’s assaulted by the potent scent of an alpha so as not to swoon.
That’s when he gets the idea.
“Your job is to make sure everyone leaves here satisfied?” He asks, hoping the beta doesn’t wave him away again.
Kim Minseok frowns. “Of course.”
“Well, then, I will only enjoy myself if I can have someone accompany me to dinner after this.” The beta merely stares at him, waiting for Sehun to continue. “If none of these alphas like me, then will you come with me to get dinner? Or will you be busy?”
Kim Minseok purses his lips. “Mr. Oh, we have a 90% average of success here, and that’s including the people who do not show up.” He sighs, checking his watch. “But yes, I will make sure all your needs are met. Now, please take your seat.”
Sehun turns with a satisfied smile as the beta repeats the announcement to the room at large. He’s no stranger to spurning alphas. This dinner date with the beta is practically inevitable.
The first alpha to sit across from him is overly polite, careful not to do anything to trigger an omega reaction. Sehun would appreciate it more if the man didn’t keep taking deep breaths whenever Sehun moves.
“A healthy body leads to a healthy mind,” the man says, subtly flexing.
Sehun gags. “I hate sports.”
It’s one after the other for the next hour, too-strong alpha scents blurring into one another until Sehun has to hold a napkin in front of his mouth during the shifts. He sends away each with a simple dismissal, picking a mentioned hobby to snark at or badmouthing an obviously expensive suit. It works very well-except for one alpha that seems very eager to please, agreeing with each of Sehun’s put downs until the omega begins talking about his dreams of ten or more omega children, a trump card Sehun uses in dire circumstances-and by the end, all the alphas are shooting Sehun dirty glances as they leave with a different omega on their arm.
Sehun folds the napkin and stands, heading over to a gaping Kim Minseok standing in the corner.
“Ready to go?”
The beta nods wordlessly.
Sehun picks the joint, a casual family restaurant that serves really nice burgers. He’d rather have his sense of smell abused by deeply fried food than alpha musk. Kim Minseok orders a salad, to which Sehun wrinkles his nose at. Ten minutes into the meal, he starts to talk.
“I don’t understand,” he murmurs, fork in hand. “You have perfect breeding, rich family, the works. It just doesn’t make any sense.”
Sehun hums noncommittally, popping a fry into his mouth.
“You know what, it’s fine. I’ll sign you up for next week. We’ll definitely find a mate for you then.” The beta gives him a reassuring smile.
Sehun stuffs his mouth with a handful of fries to hide his scowl.
--
At Minseok’s-he’d told Sehun to call him by his first name-insistence, he attends four more speed dating sessions. Every single one, save for one that Sehun puts a swift end to before Minseok can notice the alpha reaching for his hand, ends in flames followed by Sehun dragging Minseok out for food to make up for the awful experience.
“This makes absolutely no sense,” Minseok complains, not having even ordered food this time. “Eighty-two alphas. You’ve met eighty-two alphas and not a single one has so much as asked for your number. I can’t believe this.”
Sehun frowns. The beta sounds like he’s taking it out on himself. He sighs. Minseok’s gotten too involved in his case, snagging Sehun’s number a few weeks back to update him on potential mates each time he gets a registration from a new alpha and to send him encouraging messages coupled with emojis the day of each speed dating event. Sehun’s found himself looking forward to each text, stress vanishing whenever he catches a whiff of the beta’s comforting scent. The beta deserves an explanation, and it’s high time Sehun comes to terms with his not-so-platonic infatuation with the man.
“My company has speed dating in another city close by. It’s about an hour drive and they get twice as many alphas as we do. They hold it on a different day so if you’re interested I can drive you-”
“Minseok,” Sehun interrupts, meeting the man’s eyes. “I don’t want an alpha for a mate.”
Minseok’s mouth opens, but he says nothing.
“My mother’s been wanting me to settle down since I came of age, marry a rich alpha and have their pups. Instead, I went to University. I agreed to do this to get her off my back.”
“So,” Minseok says after a moment, voice soft. “You’re not even interested in alphas?”
“I think all of the speed-dating solidified that, yeah,” Sehun murmurs back. “But… I think I have a thing for betas.” He peeks up at Minseok to see his reaction. The beta is sitting completely still, expression carefully neutral, and gaze averted. Sehun swallows, looks away. “If you’re not interested, tell me now. I can… I can go and you never have to see me again.” Minseok stays silent. He sighs and pushes his chair back, halfway standing.
“Wait,” Minseok calls, licking his lips when Sehun stills, giving the beta his full attention. “I thought, a while ago… but didn’t think you’d ever want…” he trails off again, fingers tapping on the table. He tilts his head in deliberation and then gives a slight nod-Sehun can’t help but find it incredibly endearing. “My apartment isn’t that far from here. Do you want to go?”
Sehun grins.
--
On Sehun’s bed, Minseok takes in greedy gulps of air, chest rising erratically and hair hopelessly mussed and damp from sweat. As the beta tries, and fails, to get himself back in order, the sheets covering him are pushed back and a lithe omega crawls up next to him, wiping his lips on the back of his hand before dropping his head beside Minseok’s. He can’t help the low moan that escapes him at the sight.
Sehun smiles, hand coming to rest on his mate’s chest. “I want you to meet my parents.”
Minseok closes his eyes. “They’re going to hate me.”
Sehun shrugs. “Yeah, but we’ve been together for months now. They’re getting antsy.” He throws a leg over Minseok’s waist, grinning when the beta automatically reaches down to pat the limb, fingers tracing swirls on the heated skin. Sehun purrs in satisfaction, eyes falling shut. “Besides, I’d rather break the news of the pregnancy with you there.”
Minseok’s still for all of three second before he’s kissing the wicked smile off Sehun’s face.
