Gail Halvorsen was a US pilot during the Soviet
blockade of Berlin in 1948. He was the first pilot to airdrop candy attached to small parachutes to German children. The practice was soon followed by other pilots and officially expanded into an "Operation Little Vittles". Candy companies in the US joined in, and American children attached candy to the parachutes.
During 2002 Olympics Gail Halvorsen carried German team's national placard.
