Holy Crap

Wow, okay. I just got a call from mediaprophet. Last night he had called me at the ZOM-BBQ to tell me the D&D BBQ today (this was originally sort of a weekend of geek BBQs) was canceled, but didn't want to explain why at the time.

Today I spoke to him. It turns out that Derek Blume, a gentleman I've been gaming with every week for a couple of years now since I moved to the DC area, has passed away. Derek was in the D&D game in question, so of course it was canceled. (For Book of Ashes players, Derek played Liam of the Rose Knights.) [Edit: Note for Grinnelleans on my friends list, this is NOT the same Derek Blume who went to and eventually left Grinnell.]

I have to admit this has it me harder than my grandmother. I love my Granny, but she was at the end of her life, and in addition to general expectations we had as her health slowly failed, I sort of had 24 hours to steel myself, when I got the word about her coma first.

Derek was young, my own age. Details on what happened were vague, but it seems he had a heart condition I didn't know about.

I didn't know Derek nearly as well as some of the other people on my friends list did, but I feel myself tearing up. I'm going to miss his... general goofiness... a lot. This was... a lot more sudden.

It's been a real roller-coaster of a weekend.
