'Twas the night before Halloween, when all through the house
Every creature was stirring, even the rabid mouse
The pumpkins were on the porches, that has been carved to scare,
In hopes that the creature soon would be there;
The children were dressed behind costumes they hid,
While visions of candy danced in their heads;
And mamma with blood stains on her kerchief, and I in my mask,
Had just awoken to go for a long scary walk,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang up to see what was the matter.
Away to the window It flew like a flash,
I tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen leaves
Gave the lustre of darkness to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But someone dressed for the scary soiree, and eight tiny people who led the way,
With a little old driver, so scary and sick,
I knew in a moment it must be him, so I hid quick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
"Now, Jack! now, Killer! now, Evil and Demon!
On, Daemon! on Death! on, Carver and Blitzer!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now destroy away! destroy away! destroy away all!"
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the eerie sky,
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the hearse full of dead boy's, and the corpse of St. Nicholas too.
And then, in a cackle, I heard on the roof
The thaw and pawing of each massive claw.
As I drew in my breath, and was turning around,
Through the broken window came Death with a bound.
He was dressed all in black, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with blood and soot;
A bundle of weapons he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a killer just opening his pack.
His eyes -- frightening indeed! his expression was so eerie!
His cheeks were nothing but bone, his nose was one giant hole!
His teeth where stained in red,
you could tell this man was already dead;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a sheath;
He had a bony face and a rib cage for his belly,
that would poke out every time he laughed in your face when you would shout
He was tall and thin, anything but a jolly old elf,
And he laughed when he saw me, in spite of himself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I was going to be dead;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And soon went bersurk; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger on top of my nose,
And giving a nod, I was dead and he rose above;
He looked down on me, to his team he gave a whistle,
Then with one finnal mock at my lying corpse he flew away like a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, as he drove out of sight,
"HAPPY HALLOWEEN TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT!"
