I first want to talk about my love for spreading great music. It started back when I picked up Ben Folds Five after my brother had been listening to it for some time and then had moved on a bit from it.
That's kind of how it works with my brother and I -- we can't get each other into things directly...it's a matter of our pride for our musical individuality. So we put things on the table, and back off...which is usually when the other feels free to take it up.
Anyways, I got into Ben Folds Five and had the immense need to share it with most all of my friends, who then really got into it. Then my friend Betsy (love you muchly) introduced me to the music world outside the mainstream, aka indie, and thus -- primarily speaking -- Death Cab for Cutie. I'm pretty positive no one else at Patrick Henry HS knew about them until I started the talk. At least everyone I spoke to about them (and there were a great many) had no prior knowledge. Then it was Ben Folds' solo stuff, then I introduced Drew to a greater appreciation for Coldplay, for he had misconceived that Coldplay was immensely depressing. Totally untrue. Kevin got me into Sufjan Stevens (much much gratitude, always), and both he and Drew pretty much got me into Wilco (much gratitude for that, as well, Kev). And then Ryan Adams...lemme see...that accumulated over Winter Break, when I downloaded most all of Ryan's albums, and my want to BECOME Ryan Adams (maybe a little less screwed-up, maybe) started when I started dating Mary.
Oh well, the conclusion of all this is that I've been spreading Sufjan Stevens, Ryan Adams and The Damnwells like a disease, and I plan to continue doing so. Cotter's gotten into Ryan and The Damnwells now; my friend Kelly's gotten into all three, Death Cab, Wilco, and Augustana; Mary's gotten into Sufjan and moreso into Wilco (she was the only other person that had already been up on The Damnwells when I met her, and had me surpassed on both they and Ryan); I've gotten Seth and Timmy into Ryan Adams and The Damnwells, and Seth's extended into Andrew Bird, Broken Social Scene, American Analog Set, and Stars as well. Man. I love love LOVE spreading great music to great (and terrible) people. It's a ministry; a ministry of...wisdom, culture and straight-out good taste. I'm full of it, I know. But you like the music, so be quiet.
Drew's gone, thank God. I'm totally rigid when he's around because of how judgmental he is. Now I can actually work on music. and stay up late.
KD sucks and I'm planning on moving into The Gingerbread House in a couple of weeks. for good. I'm gonna find a job over in H-burg and live the life there, where all of my friends and none of my relations or regrets exist. My parents are giving me the futon. rollin. I'm just wondering about utilities. Being in H-burg will also put me closer to Cotter, and actually I'll be just about an exact midway point between Cotter and Phil, sooooo (hint hint) they can come hang, and I can also go visit them.
I have a gig alongside my musician buddies Alex engGIST and Mark Strong at Chester Perk on July 7th at 7 pm. I'm stoked -- I'm so glad I finally get to continue work on songs in preparation for that and other possible gigs.
Movies I've seen thus far this summer, in no particular order:
Hostel(goriness was overblown -- it wasn't as ridiculous as I'd expected)
MI:3(non-stop action, I liked it a lot - prolly gonna buy it)
An Unfinished Life(really good redford and freeman movie)
Poseidon(good for a disaster flick, but I ain't buying it)
'Into the Blue(entertaining, but it's Paul Walker and Jessica Alba...come on)
Running Scared(very interesting/different storyline -- entertaining, but yet again...it's Paul Walker)
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang(pretty good and interesting/entertaining/different set-up, I wouldn't mind owning it, but it's not a priority)
American Dreamz(meh. it was just weird. not buying it)
Everything Is Illuminated(good but boring movie. Elijah Wood's a really lame actor)
Stand By Me(good classic movie I hadn't seen yet. got a bunch of male actors when they were real young in it - checkidout)
X-Men 3(incredible- def buying it)
Winter Passing(a good drama -- Will Ferrell's just as great at more serious, mellowed-out acting)
The New World(really good -- rather than focused on just story-booking the entire jamestown deal, it took a much deeper and aesthetically-focused approach to what happened between Pocahontas, John Smith, and John Rolfe, and worked everything else out around them).
I know I've seen more, I can only remember the brand news and I just watched 'Stand By Me' last night, so...I remember that one.
Last thing -- I want to thank Cotter for getting me completely enveloped in The Office. It is now my favourite TV show and I am going nuts waiting for the third season.
