summary: yixing thinks yifan is cute. really cute.

Yixing is the youngest Chinese boy in his class.

He's not the only Chinese boy. There's another one named Lu Han. He's a pretty boy that has really big eyes. But Luhan plays with Minseok, and he doesn't belong. He's only a junior, after all.

He's only seven, but he knows to differentiate himself from the eight year olds.

They're older than him, and they like to hang out with their own circle of friends. It's not like the first years of kindergarten any more. Grade one is very different from kindergarten. Not everyone plays with everyone else.

Yixing wished that he could still play with Baekhyun and Chanyeol in the senior kindergarten class, but he can't. He's in grade one now, and they're still in kindergarten. Everything changes in grade one, and you're not friends with everyone in all the classrooms!

They have different break times, so he doesn't even see Baekhyun or Chanyeol anymore. Even Junmyeon isn't seen around (Junmyeon is Yixing's age, but Yixing started school early, so he's a grade ahead of the people of his age).

He's folding pieces of origami paper into a camera, when a shadow looms over him. The tiny brunette looks up, and smiles brightly at the boy beside him. The boy seems startled.

"Hi! I'm Zhang Yixing!" He greets. "You're new here, right?"

The boy is quiet for a moment, but then he nods. He's staring at Yixing's hands. The small Chinese boy follows his gaze, and smiles.

"Oh, do you want this?"

The boy smiles softly. "Can I?"

Yixing nods enthusiastically. "Yeah! But on one condition!"

The boy stares at him. "What?" He asks quietly. He's even quieter than Yixing!

"Be my friend!" Yixing exclaimed.

A bright smile crosses the boy's face, and he nods. His smile is cute, and it's all gums and teeth. Yixing thinks the other first grader is absolutely adorable.

"What's your name?" Yixing asks, as he hands the paper camera to the boy.

"… Wu Yifan." He answers, and takes the camera, happily telling Yixing a quick "thank you" in Chinese.

Yixing finds himself smiling brightly. He has a new friend! And he's Chinese too (and he's a senior; older than Yixing by a whole eleven months)!

The next time Yifan approaches Yixing, the younger is folding paper planes. Yifan sits in front of him, and smiles softly.

"What are you making?"

"A plane!" Yixing tells him, sliding the plane over to Yifan. "It's the fastest plane ever!"

His companion's eyes widen cutely. "Really?"

He nods. "When I grow up, I want to fly!"

Yifan smiles softly (he's still shy, it seemed). "… when I grow up, I want to have a happy family."

Yixing thinks that Yifan is the cutest thing alive.

They become close friends, and it's a few months later that Yifan finds Yixing sprawled out on the field. He walks over to him and sits down. They're eight and nine, now (they're in the second grade now!). Yifan pokes Yixing on the shoulder, and the younger boy blinks.

"Yes?" He asks curiously.

Yifan shyly pushes a paper crane towards the younger, and Yixing stares at it.

"Wah! Did you make that?" Yixing asked, and Yifan nods.

"You gave me a camera when we first met, so…"

Yixing's eyes soften in slight amusement at the other's words. Oh, that's cute.

"It doesn't look that pretty, because I'm not good at those things, and I just…"

Yifan's rambling. The older boy has cute fingers. They're larger than Yixing's and a little bit clumsy. But the crane looks pretty, because Yifan made it for him.

Yixing leans over and kisses his cheek.

"Thank you."

He vaguely remembers a legend that his mother had told him about paper cranes. He turns to the blushing Yifan, and smiles (dimple and all, and Yifan takes a breath).

"Can you teach me?"

Yifan nods.

(Yixing thinks he really likes Yifan).

A legend says that to the person who folds a thousand cranes, a miracle will be theirs. A wish of almost anything they please. Or at least that's what his mother told him. Yifan told him that with the thousandth crane, he'll find his true love.

So Yixing works for it.

They're in high school when Yixing is folding his nine hundred and ninety eighth paper crane. Yifan plops down in the seat beside him in the cafeteria, where he's sitting with Baekhyun and Luhan, and chuckles.

Yifan is a good ten centimeters taller than Yixing now (and his rebellious stage allowed him to dye his hair a striking sandy blonde), and they seriously look like the cutest couple in the world (if only they were actually dating). The nine hundred and ninety eighth crane is a small one, the colour of the morning sky; a dull purplish orange.

Yifan called it "violet sunrise", and Yixing would rather violently throttle him than call it that. He's so damn pretentious. Ugh. It's dull purple-orange.

"You still believe in that?" Yifan asks, resting his chin on his palm.

Yixing shoots him a look. "Well, yeah. Of course I do."

"Why?"

"Why not?"

"Because it's not true."

Yixing makes the final fold, and glares at Yifan.

"You're the one who told me about the legend…"

"We were kids." Yifan replies.

The younger boy huffs, getting out of his seat and leaving. Luhan glances up from his phone screen for the first time since Yifan arrived.

"That was really harsh, Yifan. You know that he really believes in that." Luhan says.

Yifan sighs, "He needs to stop believing in a stupid legend, and realize that at I'm madly in love with him!"

Baekhyun peeks up from over his book, leering at Yifan.

"You're funny, Wu."

Yixing's friends weren't exactly the nicest to Yifan, but the blonde wasn't complaining. They tended to knock some good sense into him.

"Just confess to him or something," Baekhyun adds.

Yifan blinks at him for a moment, and sighs. "What if he says no?"

"What if he says yes?" Baekhyun retorts.

"Just try it, you'll never know what happens. Do it in your own way." Luhan supplies.

Yifan stares down at his hands, and nods. "Okay…"

He gets up from the table, and takes with him the nine hundred and ninety eighth paper crane.

Yifan nearly tears his home apart, looking for the origami paper that he haad years ago. He could easily buy more, but he wants to replicate the crane that he made for Yixing in the second grade.

The appearance of an eighteen year old boy looking around so frantically for paper is rather amusing. He has a stupid smile on his lips when he finally finds the packet of paper.

Clumsily large fingers attempt to fold in the same way that small, nimble fingers once moved. The paper creases beneath his digits, and Yifan grimaces as they're much too big to neatly fold exactly how little Yifan had done it.

When he's finally satisfied, he gets up and puts the crane into his pocket.

"Mom! I'm going to Yixing's house!" He yells as he runs through the door.

He doesn't stay long enough to hear his mother's reply, and he's already down the street from his house. He knocks on the door of Yixing's house, and he's breathless.

Yixing opens the door, and he's taken by surprise as Yifan hugs him.

"Hi, I'm sorry for crushing your dreams, Xing, don't be mad at me?"

The younger boy laughs softly, and hugs him back.

"I'm not mad at you." He says quietly. Yifan's heart skips a beat.

They stand in one another's embrace for a moment, and Yifan breaks it.

"So, can I come in?"

Yixing laughs, and Yifan thinks it's the most beautiful thing he's ever heard.

They sit in Yixing's room, and Yifan holds out the newly made crane to him.

"This is for you, Yixing… for your collection. Your nine hundred and ninety ninth crane." Yifan says. "I hope you can find your true love."

The brunette looks at him, and smiles lightly, accepting the red crane.

"Mama told me that the person who is with me when I have my thousandth crane is my true love."

Yifan takes a moment to register what he's trying to say.

"Oh, well then… I guess I should leave?"

Sometimes it's better to let go, right?

Yixing giggles, and presents to Yifan a small crane that looks like the twin of the one that he just gave him. It's a little tattered, but it's still recognizably the crane that Yifan made him in the second grade.

"I never counted this one until now, but…" the smaller boy smiles. "I guess that gives me a thousand."

He leans over to Yifan, and presses a soft kiss to his cheek.

Yifan stammers something incoherent, and Yixing laughs at him.

"Is it possible that you're my true love, Yifan?"

"I really like you, so I would hope so." He adds.

Yifan splutters. Yixing's face is way too close to him. "Can I kiss you?"

"Be my fucking boyfriend, Zhang Yixing." Yifan doesn't even answer him. He just wraps his arms around Yixing, and meshes their lips together. Yixing smiles in satisfaction into the kiss, and winds his arms around Yifan's neck.

They pull away, and Yixing's eyes are twinkling.

"I love you," Yifan whispers, peppering his face with kisses. It sounds like he's confessing everything too quickly, but no; he's waited several millennia for this. Or at least that's what it felt like.

The brunette giggles.

"Me too."

"No, say it. Tell me you love me."

Yixing smiles teasingly. "I don't know…"

The blonde presses kisses along Yixing's face and neck. It's tickling Yixing, and he laughs.

"Fine, fine! I love you too, Yifan."
