(no subject)
I'm always amazed when I find celebrities have internet community things. like momus' journal, or jessica stam's myspace page ( or the recently discovered Lauren Ambrose page, a favourite actress of mine ) It's funny when you think that the net really does have a large grasp on pop culture and extends to those you otherwise wouldn't think would bother themselves with internet community websites.
It's simultaneously wonderful and upsetting.
What's bad about it is that since everyone has resorting to communicating electronically, people are losing touch with how to truly interact with one another. I have met many people who are fantastic at composing an email, bordering on poetic; and then they are simply terrible at verbalizing in a group, even if it's small.
This obviously in aiding in people becoming more reclusive from active 'real-life' society, and instead promoting participation from a distance.
It isn't all bad. Because of the internet, people who otherwise wouldn't have the guts to speak up about issues they feel are important now have a platform which isn't nearly as dangerous to shout from. Now, even those would would else go through life unnoticed and underappreciated have a stage to show their talent. Be in music, art, writing, or just having an opinion, there is certainly at least a small corner of the internet which people just like you are waiting to read, hear, see, or give input on whatever it is you are showcasing.
Obviously that too can backfire, since there are no shortage of sad floppy hair cutted kids strumming their guitar and singing about girlfriend's they had lost at fourteen. Or twelve year old girls posing nude in front of a mirror and sending out photographs to any internet pretador of their choice.
Another great thing the net has going for it is the sheer amount of information. Wikipedia, for instance, is a goldmine of articles on just about anything, ranging from the names of stars and planets, to the names of actors in sitcoms in India.
