the long drive

after we spent some time in Philly, uncle Jimmy and i decided to get in a few more hours of travel before stopping to rest. i kept fading while he drove down the 95, and he finally pulled over around 3:30am near Washington, DC. we drove around checking 4 different motels and none of them had a vacancy, so we decided to park in a mall lot and sleep on the 2 couches that were in the big van on their way down to my cousin Jessica. we used the papa san coushins as our blankets and not even half an hour went by when i noticed the lights of a police cruiser shining in on us. we explained our situation to the officer and he said that he'd rather we slept ther than get back on the road yet. so after about 4 hours, Jimmy got up and started driving further down south while i kept sleeping on the couch.

we landed in a small town outside of Richmond, VA called Petersburg. it was about 9:30 so we decided to get breakfast. a local aimed us towards Dixie's where i asked for an authentic Southern breakfast. the waitress (complete with fallen-out teeth) served up sausage and gravy over homemade biscuits, and grits. she told me to add butter, sugar, and a bit of salt to the grits and they weren't bad. i felt truly in the south.

back in the van we drove through the rest of Virginia and into North Carolina.
