For losing sketches in line ideation: get a sketch pad and sketch upwards, refining the lines each time
For coloring/shading: determine light source and mark it on your paper to remind you. make sure the line work on one side is heavier than the other, the heavier side being away from the light. It'll help pop out the figure, give it depth
For the most part I'm able to pick up the general idea of what I sketch down so that's not too big of an issue. Although it is a mess so maybe I should try that.
As for shading, I know that trick for marking the light source, but it's mostly the issue of how light works on a plane that I haven't really refined. But I guess that mostly comes with studies than any other thing.
Although I will keep that in mind with the line depth. That does seem like a neat trick.
