Fic Festival!

Jan 04, 2013 06:37

I thought I'd steal lucathia_rykatu's fic meme this year since I think I actually managed to write quite a bit this time around! Certainly more than in 2011.

Monthly Updates:
January:

Slivers of Comprehension Chapter 1/2 - Kamen Rider W, 650 words
Resting in Peace - Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger, 834 words
Showtime - Tenimyu RPF, 821 words
Vengeance - Prince of Tennis, 4398 words

The first one had actually been written for a while, but only got posted when I got around to getting an AO3! People seem to complain about how long it takes to get an invite or whatever, but I got it within two or three days, maybe because it was the end of the year and they were cleaning them out? Dunno! The last one had also been written for a while but I cleaned it up and finally posted it on request-ish? :)
The Gokai one kinda came out of nowhere as my first fic for the fandom! I had just finished catching up with the show and Don went from being the character I didn't care about to being kind of my favorite. I miss that show~
Then I was doing a fic meme type thing which produced at least four short fics, of which Showtime was one. It didn't have a name before today yesterday :D;; I still have two I never finished for that, oops. :(((

March:

Spooked - Gokaiger, 894 words

I guess I didn't write anything to be posted in February, oops! Probably too busy running around doing things and... posting pictures on Tumblr. But I returned in March (a couple weeks before leaving for Japan) with this fic! It's kinda cheesy and with a simple premise but I'm pretty proud of the characterization?

April:

Eyes Full of Darkness Chapter 1 - D2 RPS, 851 words

This was the real start of this year's fic boom! I was lonely in Japan sometimes, which translated into arbitrarily posting the start of my first longfic in a couple years. (Well, the first one to be published, and that was intended to be multiple chapters from the beginning. 一期一会, I am looking at you) I had no idea where I was going with this and I still don't, but I'm glad I started it XD

May:

Eyes Full of Darkness Chapter 2 - 1996 words
Eyes Full of Darkness Chapter 3 - 2695 words

And here the fic really started to take off! Two chapters in one month is a lot for me XD Look at those word counts jump! I find that whenever I write a longfic, the chapters will just keep getting longer and longer if I let them... I'd like them to stay around 3k, though ;u; Stop getting long!

June:

Eyes Full of Darkness Chapter 4 - 2954 words
Something Approaching Abandon - Gokaiger, 1190 words

I managed to write two things in June despite it being the busiest - or at least the most exciting - month of my life. This was the month I went to Tokyo twice and went to the D2 event ♥♥♥♥♥♥ The plot of EFoD finally started to go somewhere, and I left it on a bit of a cliffhanger, ahaha.
The Gokai fic kind of came out of nowhere all of a sudden, I really don't know what brought it on at all, especially since I never paid much attention to Sid when the show was airing. I'm not totally satisfied with it, but it was interesting exploring a new character and trying to put a new spin on canon. Maybe everyone wanted to put that same spin on it, though D||

August:

All Things Beautiful and Bloody Chapter 1 - D2 RPF, 2220 words

Apparently I didn't post anything in July either. I was too busy enjoying Japan, I expect! Crying over my D2 handshake event, probably. The beginning of that month was also very exciting as I visited Tokyo once again to meet starprincessl and do AKB things and film an AKB tv show and spend too much money. :D I have the feeling that I wrote some things, however, that just haven't seen the light of day yet.
BUT. August brought forth the announcement of the new D-Stage, TRUMP, starring all 16 D2 boys in a play about... vampires. The internet exploded overnight (well, for my timezone anyway, I woke up and found like 20 WHERE IS ASUKA tweets), fanart was drawn, and fic was written. And most of the fic that was written was written by me. I had my qualms about starting a SECOND longfic with no foreseeable end four months and four chapters into the first, but everyone including me argued "But vampires!!" and there was nothing I could do |D I didn't even have a title for it at first, so I posted it under a temporary name like "Frivolous Vampire School Fic" or something |D I'm really happy about it though. The first chapter of this one is kind of bold and attempts to set up a number of things that I hadn't really planned through at the time, I think XDD;; But the planning for this is going much more smoothly than EFoD, if only because I have an actual character description list and notes for chara arcs instead of just. a picture of everyone's faces organized by who they're allied with. literally all the planning I have put down for that one. :D;

September:

Eyes Full of Darkness Chapter 5 - 2855 words
All Things Beautiful and Bloody Chapter 2 - 2660 words

In September, I managed to write a chapter of both longfics! September was a good month =u= Possibly it was because I wasn't going to school much, but you know! Regrets!
Wordcount in both was pretty stable, so I was happy about that as well! (even if they are both just getting longer from here, orz)
One thing I was proud about was that I managed to update ATBB exactly one month after the first chapter. I thought I could keep to a steady and reliable pace, but... that didn't really happen |Dv

October:

Serenitatis - D2 RPS, 488 words
Adrift in the Waves - Tenimyu RPS, 5313 words

October was a oneshot month! Both of these fics started in class, but Adrift in the Waves ended up taking over my life for a little bit. I remember staying up really late to write it, writing it desperately and shoelessly in the library between classes, etc. I was surprised that it was published only four days after the other one, because I feel like it was weeks XD Definitely one where the story took over everything.
Serenitatis is, hmm, really normal? Just a tiny fluffy piece without regard for story or anything else. I hadn't written one like that in a long time, it was refreshing |D The title gave me so much trouble, but what else is new?
Adrift in the Waves was 80% me being influenced by reading The Tale of the Heike in lit class, 5% me wanting to write something non-D2, and 15% me wanting to kill somebody off. It was very successful in that regard |DDDDD The original, unedited version was a lot more violent and kinda sketchy too, and it was written longhand so it still exists somewhere :D;;

November:

Of Futures - D2 RPS, 1111 words
Eyes Full of Darkness Chapter 6 - 3000 words

The word counts were awesome this month 8D
I had one more oneshot left in me after October, it seems! I think this one was also written in class? manjupress and I often commiserate over our tiny D2 ships, or more appropriately kayaks, and this was a gift to her c: I had wanted to write IkeJun anyway after their super romanchikku DVD together. super. romanchikku.
When I first looked at this EFoD to get the word count for it, my first thought was that it was a frivolous filler chapter full of Baka Trio hijinx, but there were actually some important things in it! Like the Mystery Phone Ikemen. I dunno when he's going to show up, but when he properly does, he'll turn the whole story around, I think XD I don't have much planned for the story, so the next section might be a little shaky and/or unexpected, but once he gets here, it'll be smoother sailing! ...provided my stupid protagonist cooperates.

December:

Eyes Full of Darkness Chapter 7 - 3413 words
All Things Beautiful and Bloody Chapter 3 - 3531 words

Yay! The second month I managed to update both longfic :) The word counts are starting to get away from me, though....
EFoD's pace continues to be slow, I need to work on integrating my endless exposition a little more smoothly |D;; But hopefully there will be some action in the next chapter! Action!! I'm pretty impressed I managed to write and post seven chapters in one year, but I can't say much has happened in it yet? How long will this fic be if it keeps on at this rate... My great memory of this chapter is Skyping with gokaitrey (tho my mic and cam weren't and still aren't working D||) while she was reading the chapter and getting firsthand reactions to it XDD My favorite was when Shin found the buttons to go places and she was like SHIN GO TO THE POOL WHY WOULDN'T YOU GO TO THE POOL and... he did in the next line XDDD It was funnnn~
Then more vampires for a long-awaited Christmas update! Not too much happened in this chapter either, and Pyon's backstory wasn't added particularly smoothly, I don't think, but it set the stage for the next chapter, which is where we finally get some interesting stuff happening. Although fortunately people seem to think that vampires are already pretty interesting :D I encouraged everyone to liveblog this one, but recently I've considered that a) it's hard to find if you want to see it again later and b) people are less likely to leave long comments then! I am kind of really bad at commenting properly on fic, there's at least two I've been putting off commenting on for months, but I looooooove long comments.

I ended the year by writing chapter four of vampires, but it's not done yet, so I'll count it for next year :D

Total number of stories: Two longfic (10 chapters total), six oneshots, and two entries in a drabble collection. (It feels wrong to call that one longfic |D)

Total word count: 41,053 words posted! I have at least 6k of a oneshot I (apparently) started in September, and I know I wrote at least 4k of 一期一会 this year, but they don't count for that ;u; anyway, the 4k of Vengeance makes up for that since I didn't write it this year.

Fandoms written in: D2, Tenimyu, Tenipuri, Gokaiger

Leitmotif(s) of the year: In addition to the usual fluffy we-are-in-love nonsense, there was a lot more one-sided affection and not-so-good endings. Kiddo ended up getting characterized as being traumatized and broken and not at all his perfect amazing wonderful cute self due to circumstances :((

Favorite fic: 一期一会!!!!!! I ADORE THAT FIC TOO MUCH. but if only published ones count, maybe... vampires? idk :(

Best fic: Spooked? It's not really a challenging fic in any sense, but I think it's the best because of the characterization. It was somewhat of a turning point in my uphill battle with proper characterization that I've been fighting for a couple years now. It just... to me it feels like it fits. Like the scenario wouldn't happen in the show per se, but it could happen with those characters. I'm really fond of everyone's background actions ;u;

Most popular fic: Spooked has a whole bunch of Kudos on AO3. ATBB is probably the most popular within my social group~

Most underappreciated fic: Vengeance, I suppose. I thought it would be pretty popular, not only being SanaYuki but also being YAKUZA AU, but it wasn't really...? Then again, I never really advertised it anywhere :D

Favorite first lines: None of my fics start out interesting at all. Sometimes there are good ones in the middle but never at the beginning. I think the best is EFoD chapter 4?

A few hours after his initial excitement had worn off, Akutsu came to the conclusion that he hated hospitals. They were boring and smelled funky and people freaked out at you if you so much as started dancing to the Mahou no Tenshi opening theme in the middle of the waiting room.
ahahaha oh shin

I guess Resting in Peace's opening line isn't too bad either. very. hook-y or something.

The one good thing about Gai, Don figured, was that he could probably take him in a fight.

Most fun fic: One of the two longfic. Vampires because... like Sho and Madame You say, "Morality is something vampires require only in extreme moderation." It's fun to play with characters who have all eternity to hate or love each other, because either of those things could change as time goes along. It results in a lot more flexibility |D
Assassins because... Shin. It's fun writing from a totally crazy and out-of-touch, but also insightful otaku POV and... I like fighting with him. Struggling to build a world around him? Tryin' to stay one step ahead of him when he's already five steps ahead of me? XD It's like a brain puzzle, that fic.

Sexiest fic: Vampires. For sure vampires. Always nommin' on each other and stuff.

Fic that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: Something Approaching Abandon. The research for the fic itself showed I'd been remembering canon wrong, and in the end my initial opinions and the feelings that led to me starting this fic in the first place both changed :O

New pairing/genre/fandom you never predicted writing in January: Well, it's not that I never thought that I'd write vampires, but I never thought I'd have a reason to write vampires 8D;; ooooops. ALTHOUGH I didn't really ever think I'd write a fic about assassins. Especially not one like... that.

Hardest fic to write: Fuckin' 一期一会. I swear, I am only a good enough writer to write that one like, two weeks out of the year. And in those two weeks a lot gets done and it's really good, but the rest of the year can basically only be spent editing D||

Biggest disappointment: Not being able to keep on a monthly update schedule for vampires. Not finishing, or even making much progress, on 一期一会. ;A;

Biggest surprise: Spontaneously starting two longfic and actually updating them somewhat reliably, with some idea of where they were going. How hard I worked on Adrift in the Waves. The contents of the currently-6k oneshot I mentioned earlier. I had ideas for it and had shipped the main charas for a while, but it kind of exploded on me XD

Most telling fic: Prooooobably EFoD, because I relate to Shin a lot, and he's a very genre savvy protagonist, which means I have to analyze and judge the world I'm creating as I create it kinda, so most of his actions are informed by that |D Also Serenitatis because it's so indicative of my normal style, even though I've branched out of it more this year.

What's next? This year's goals are to post at least 15 chapters of longfics! At the minimum! I'd like to update them all once a month if I could, but I don't think I have the discipline for that ;u; I'm ALSO gonna finish my fics from the last meme and then start a new one because I think that was a really good challenge for me last time and helped me get out of my comfort zone :O! The two requests left are really crazy ones though XD Here's an excerpt from the alien!Kuma one XDDDD

On the sixth day after the 27th cycle since his hatching, ◊zcvßueЉrqЮa was finally selected as a candidate to research the bizarre planet known as “Earth.” He was assigned to an area called Japan, and given a new name, “Wada Takuma,” which would allow him to blend in with the other inhabitants without attracting undue attention.

Now that's what I call good first lines. That one's at 700 words with no end or resolution in sight, but it'll get there? Then, I want to write a lot of little ficlets for everyone else too c: I ALSO want to write more of my WIPs and clear that folder out! There's 20-some in there right now and I want to cut that down a lot :( My main goals for those are to finish my oneshot and get at least 5k more written for 一期一会! I'll post a snippet from each of them maybe.

“Well, that’s great. Any other advice you can give me that doesn’t involve messing up your body to match your emotions?”

Takahisa thought for a bit. He hated to admit it, but his previous relationships had not gotten very far along. He rather thought that his date with Yuuki just then had probably been the most successful date he had ever been on, even taking into consideration that he had been rejected, accused of being a serial killer and a zombie, lost a snowball fight, and that it had ended with him falling unconscious. And that it had been set up by eight-year-olds, and that it wasn’t actually a date.

The bar was very, very low.

He sat up and addressed Shou-chan seriously. “Make sure you never tell her that she’d be cuter if she dressed up like an anime character. Especially not one that it turns out is actually a dude. She’ll hit you with her purse. And probably kick you until you’ve got massive internal bleeding and leave you to die alone in the streets of Namba.”

Shou-chan stared at him impassively. Takahisa decided it would be a good idea to lie down again. “It… happened to a friend of mine. Back in high school. It’s… one of those things that you don’t think about being a problem until it actually is. So.”

“Did he survive?” Shou-chan asked in a carefully neutral tone of voice.

“Oh, yeah, but he was never the same afterwards. Now he’s into guys,” Takahisa said, and then wondered if possibly the IV juice, or maybe the soup, had special properties that would allow him to melt away and drip through the floorboards. It didn’t seem like it. Probably the salad did. Everyone knew vegetables tasted so gross because they were filled with nutrients and dark magic.

Really long excerpt but! I love 一期一会. So much. It's the best and funniest writing I've ever done. But it's hard to write, goshdangit.

“Not on your life,” he tells him between kisses, and after Kengo leaves and he promises to clean up, he thinks about him. I want you, he said, and I need you, and he’s done Heavy Rotation at karaoke enough times that he knows what comes next. As he is now he doesn’t think he’s capable of loving anyone but his mom and his dog, but Kengo, well… It might have been a whim that led him to go after him in the first place, but now he decides he’s got to see it through to the end, because even if he doesn’t, can’t love Kengo, he still likes him a hell of a lot. He might be a selfish, stubborn, easily angered tsundere bastard, but he surprises him sometimes.

Oh as yet nameless JKen oneshot. You need so much editing, but I'm so fond of the HebiRote line. That's stayin' in there no matter what. I'll have to have someone betaread this one for sure. It's currently at about 3/4 of the way through canon and should go all the way through to the end. Keep writing!!! You got the hardest part done already (maybe) so you can finish it once you review your canon!

No, really, what's next? Vampires chapter 4!!!! Vampires!!!! It's at 2.7k as of this writing, so hopefully it'll be finished before it hits 4k orz. There's two things left to happen in this chapter and we're in the middle of one of them, so!!

...and maybe someone will convince me to write sentaific and I'll have three longfic this year instead of only two. D:

wait really, memelicious
