There was an rush of cold air and a large dragon appeared for a split second. It dropped the burden, a small dragon's egg, and without so much as an exhausted flap, disappeared. If one caught a glimpse of it, it was obvious from the pale ashen hide and the weary way it simply dropped the egg, that it was on its last legs. It never made it home.

As for the egg in question, it plummeted towards the grounds, or rather, towards the unsuspecting Harry on his broom.

The brief flash of something huge and bronze drew Harry's attention to just the right area of the sky for him to unthinkingly reach out and slow the egg's fall, until it dropped almost gently into his outstretched arms. For a moment more he tried to catch a glimpse of the creature that had appeared above him, but to no avail. Even the air was reverting back to the warmth of an October afternoon. When it was clear that he was once again alone over the lake, Harry looked down at the thing he'd caught.

An egg? He turned it over carefully, the grips on his gloves keeping it from slipping out of his hands. The shell was cold - no wonder, if wherever it had come from was as freezing as that gust - and rather hard to the touch, though Harry was no expert on eggs. He unzipped his hoodie and tucked it safely inside before fastening it again, which freed his hands for the quick flight back to solid ground.

Within his shell, the dragon scrabbled, trying to break free. It was time to hatch, if only he could hatch, if only he could break out. There was someone right there, someone he wanted to meet ever so much.

The egg rocked a little, not much, and the dragon tried so hard. There was someone just outside the shell, if only he could break free and 'Wouldn't he help him?'

'Won't you help me?

Harry started at the voice, dropping the broom in his hurry to look for the speaker. There was something off about it; when he had done a full circle and seen no one close enough to have spoken so loudly - though there were some people standing closer to the buildings - he frowned and looked down at the egg in his jumper. Just in time for an echo of the plea, and a sense of effort/longing/desperation/timetohatch/timetogetout. Oh.

Oh. With suddenly numb fingers, he tugged the egg back out into the air and knelt with it, prying at the largest of the faint tracery of cracks that were starting to appear across its surface.

"Hold on," he told it, which would have made him feel rather foolish if he wasn't still reeling from the emotional barrage. "You're going to be alright. Just need to-" and there, a piece of the shell broke off, revealing a patch of white beneath it. And another, and another still, until enough of the shell was scattered over the grass that he could take in the fact that it had wings.

The egg cracked around him and he had room to move and he lifted his head and his wings to breath and his wings spread to balance, but he was tumbling forward anyways. When he managed to right himself, he lifted his head and his eyes swirled green/blue when he met Harry's. There he was. And he'd helped. He knew he would.

'My name is Ruth.'

"Um," Harry said, showcasing his ability to speak in a crisis, and automatically reached out to help the little dragon to stand properly upright. The waves of positive emotion rolling off Ruth were making it hard to think, so he just busied himself brushing pieces of eggshell off his drying hide and sending back as much of the same affection as he could - which was surprisingly easy; it was as though he'd known Ruth all his life. "I'm Harry. Er, nice to meet you, I guess?"

Ruth eyes swirled with gratitude and he helpfully held up a wing to point out an errant peice of shell. 'Yes. I am very hungry.' He said wistfully, his head tilting upwards to see Harry and where they were, 'Is there food?' Nothing looked like food but he wasn't entirely sure what food looked like. He was dreadfully hungry though and he poked his head against Harry's leg, the hunger rushing into Harry's mind.

"Food?" He blinked, then looked around blankly. Whilst finding something for Ruth to eat was suddenly of the highest priority, dinner wasn't for another half an hour. Although, and he kicked himself for ignoring it, the cook would probably still be there getting everything ready. Yeah, that would do. He rummaged around in his pockets and managed to find a slightly squished but unopened bar of chocolate from that morning, and unwrapped it as fast as he could to offer it.

He really hoped chocolate wasn't bad for dragons.

Ruth took the chocolate bare gratefully and devoured it neatly, if not a little hurriedly. The chocolate didn't seem quite right, but it was good, and he chirped for more. 'Is there more Harry? I am still quite hungry.'

There wasn't more, so it was time to make a run for the cafeteria. Harry stood, awkwardly scooping the dragon into his arms as one would a dog - except you didn't tell a dog, 'sorry about this, it's just over there' with your mind - and then headed for the main building at a fast walk. He could pick up the broom later; it wasn't like anyone was going to steal it.

It only took a minute to read the paving of the courtyard, and if he hadn't remembered at the last minute that he was a mutant and could therefore open the door without dropping the baby dragon he would have just stood outside until someone had noticed his predicament. He was probably drawing enough stares as it was.

Doug was taking an afternoon jog when Potter ran past him, holding a dragon towards the building. Had Doug not witnessed the other dragon's he might have been shocked. As it stood he just wanted to see what was going on. "Hello, you need any help there?" He asked, probably all to normal seeming considering, dragon.

Ruth was still keening a little when they made it to the door. He was so hungry and Harry was so good to get him to food, right? Oh, someone else, but Harry could deal with them, Ruth would meet them later. He nudged Harry and chirped, 'Food?'

"He's hungry," Harry said, unable to really focus on anything else, "... He's really hungry." The door wasn't opening properly, probably because the part of his brain that usually handled that sort of thing was caught up in the painful pangs of sympathy hunger. "Er, can you get the door, please?"

"Sure." He ran over and pulled open the door. "Why is he so hungry?" He asked as he followed Potter into the building.

"He just hatched," Harry turned his head slightly to keep talking, even as he made a beeline for the kitchen's side-door. Well, hatched probably wasn't the right word for what was happening, but it was going to have to do. He remembered that Doug had been at the hatching earlier in the week. "Kaplan's dragon was like this, wasn't she?"

Lavi had been on his way to make himself a snack before dinner, but hey, two boys, one with an armful of dragon, that was pretty interesting wasn't it?

The redhead opened the kitchen door and offered it to the darker-haired boy, his eye wide with surprise. "You got a dragon too, huh?"
