Heh, the rock thing already, huh? Seifer thought the whole idea was just plain silly, what the hell was so romantic about a rock? Then, Rinoa had decided to get him one, and it suddenly made a lot more sense. The rock wasn't important, the idea was.

So, out he came, getting a little nervous himself. Earlier had been flirty, yeah, but it was more about catching up than anything else. Now, this, this was a different matter. You didn't just give a rock to a friend, friendships were for pine cones or something. Last year, it'd been a really fun thing, and he loved every moment of it, but now they'd be living under the same roof rather than temporary acquaintances in the same city. This was a helluva lot more serious.

Oh, get over it, Seifer, he mentally chided himself. Getting all worked up over a girl he knew wasn't gonna make things any worse than they already were. He wasn't some kitten, he was a mountain lion. Lions don't know fear, and they sure don't back down from anything.

Alright, there she was, pacing back and forth under a tree. Ha, look at that, she was nervous too. So much so that she probably wouldn't even notice if he sneaked up on her. He walked carefully and slowly, until he was standing beside the tree a couple feet away.

"Boo."

Yes, the silly rock thing. Sure she might be moving a little fast, but when had either one of them been the sort to over think this sort of thing?

Despite this, despite reminding her that this was Seifer and she certainly didn't have any reason to be nervous she got more nervous with each step he took. Maybe she was being silly, maybe he'd just not wanted to admit that he'd long since moved on in her absence, maybe she'd just misread everything he'd done or said since they'd both gotten at the school. Oh god!

If they'd thought last time had been bad, this time was even worse as feather's exploded everywhere in a practical cloud of white fluff. When they cleared poor Rinoa was several feet up in the air, wings carrying her without much real thought because it was unlikely that the poor girl was capable of much at the moment. Guess that showed just how nervous she was while pretending not to be.

Man, someone just shoot a chicken? He'd have to remember: startle the girl, the feathers fly. When he could see again, she was up in the air: oh, wow, fully functional, too? She was just full of surprises. That look on her face just made him cackle, he couldn't help it, and all of his own nervousness just melted away.

"Surprised to see me? I'm hurt," he said, not really hurt at all, and walked over to stand under her with arms raised to catch, just in case she hadn't quite mastered the art of landing gracefully yet.

It was only because she couldn't fully control it yet. With time this would happen less and less. Or so she hoped because it'd be mortifying if she had this to look forward to every time someone startled her.

"Seifer!" She looked down at him laughing and caught the giggles herself. "You did that on purpose. You're not allowed to be hurt." It was a good thing he did, because she was not and as her wings vanished in another cascade of feathers she most certainly would have landed badly if he hadn't realized just what was likely to happen.

"Thanks." She's a little breathless now, being scared out of your feathers would do that to a girl after all. "My hero again, huh?"

All she had to do was think of it as a revolutionary weight-loss technique. All them feathers had to come from somewhere, didn't they?

"Couldn't help it," he said after letting her down to the ground, "You looked like you needed a good shock to get back to the real world there." Oh man, that had so been worth it.

"Always," he said with a nod to the hero line, then crossed his arms with an easy grin, "Now, what's I heard about a rock?"

Do it often enough and she's going to have you eating those feathers you meanie face.

"Guess you got a little more than you bargained out if it though." She shook her head, even she hadn't known that was going to happen. "Just makes me more determined to pay you back than ever." She'd find a way to get even, just you watch.

"Oh, it's just this silly little trend I heard was going around. I figured if a guy was going to always be playing hero and back watcher then according to custom it was the least I could do." Right, because that's all there was to it, sure.

Holding out her hand, she offered the rock to him wondering if maybe it was silly and she should have found a rock that looked differently. It wasn't very big mind being about the size of a quarter, obviously she'd spent a while with the crater digging around to find something as silly as the tradition was. Also? He was damned lucky she hadn't dropped it because of that little stunt he'd pulled.

Who you calling a meanie face?

"Yeah, I'll say," he said, fighting off the residual chuckles, "I thought for a minute there you'd plain exploded in a puff of feathers and I'd have to piece you back together again." He relaxed a little more, leaning his head back, "You keep trying, I'll keep foiling you. Best game ever."

No, this was the best game ever. It was serious business, but still a game. She knew what giving a rock meant to someone, and so did he, but neither of them were gonna come right out and say it, were they? "Paying your knight a queenly favor, huh?"

She held it out, and he had to fight back a little laughter. Oh, Rinoa, leave it to you to find some cute rock like that. From just the right angle, he could swear it even looked like a heart. Very, very cute. Alright, no sense in delaying what was inevitable, was there? He reached right out and took it from her. "It's a nice rock. I'll take it."

If the name fits.

"So I'm Humpty Dumpty made out of feathers now am I? What if you couldn't piece me back together even with all the kings horses and all the kings men?" She eyed him carefully. "You'll let your guard down one of these days and I'll be waiting."

"No. A sorceress giving her knight a favor. You know that as well as I do." It was unconventional perhaps, but they were unconventional people even if you take away the whole mutant thing they had going on.

It had taken her a while and she'd even managed to scrape her knee in the process she'd have you know. You'd better be grateful just what length she went through to pull off this silly little charade Seifer. "Good, you do that." Really, she wasn't sure what else to say to that. "You'd better take good care of it, Seifer." That was, game or no game, her figurative hear he was holding in those over sized hands of his after all.

That's not nice, says the inventor of the nickname chicken-wuss.

"Then I'd go find someone to send me back in time and stop this from ever happening, of course." Silly gets silly back, Rinoa. "I'll be waiting for you to try."

"A sorceress' knight. I can dig that." They needed protection too, even if they were fully capable of kicking enough ass on their own. Seifer wasn't gonna say it, but he imagined that if she was fully trained she could bring him down to the ground.

Acknowledged, this was a special rock. He'd already figured that out. And don't worry, unless something catastrophically bad happened, he'd be taking care of this thing for a good long time. "No one's gonna break your heart, Rinoa. I'll see to it." She'd better enjoy sappy, because that's where this was going, and fast. "This means you've staked your claim, you know. Last chance to turn back."

You'll get over it, you're a tough guy.

"So you'd time travel and come to the rescue? Silly me why didn't I realize this?" She likes getting silly back, wasn't that obvious yet? "Oh you don't need to wait, really."

"Good because I'm no princess, not by a long shot. I doubt I'll ever be one either." Once again, serious talk buried under a game, they were such a silly pair. Well this was true, but who wanted to go through life being all bad ass and awesome alone? Certainly not Rinoa, she didn't like being left alone for long periods of time remember? And yes, she was going to be able to bring him to his knees and for a variety of different reasons over the next few years. It was something he could look forward to.

Sure it was from a hole in the ground and was for all intents purposes not worth anything, it was still priceless in the end. You can handle priceless, right Seifer? "Good, that's one of the main duties of a sorceress' knight after all." If she didn't enjoy sappy, would she be where she was right now? Doing this, for him? "I know what it means, and I wouldn't have done it if I didn't mean it." She smiled up at him. "There's no chance to turn back now and there hasn't been, not for a long while. Not for me anyway."

"Yeah, I'd go back in time, what's so hard to understand?" he said like it was the most normal thing in the world, "So, you're already pranking me? You're good, I gotta give you that."

Seifer smirked. She was humble, huh? "You're princess enough, but sorceress works too." Layers upon layers, this game. Seifer had told her at some point about his romantic dream, to be the princess's knight-consort. It was a big compliment from him to call someone a princess, it meant more coming from him than that one compliment a spoiled brat enjoys hearing. Now, as for bringing him to his knees, she could accomplish that without using her powers, no doubt, but that kind of knee-bending he wasn't going to raise any objections over.

Alrighty, that settled it. 'To be continued' just changed to 'continuing.' He cupped the little rock in his hand, gave it a squeeze, and tucked it in his pocket alongside the feather. "I'm always a slave to duty." Have a look at that heartfelt smile again, Rinoa, you earned it. "Just making sure you knew what you're into. Now, speaking of long times, there's something I owe you from last summer."

Odds of her not knowing what was coming here? Minuscule. What little distance was crossed, and he put one hand behind her back and the other on her head. He didn't quite force her or anything, but there was definitely some gentle pressure to push her head toward his.

"Just making sure." You mean it wasn't? That was a pity to hear. "What! No! I just don't want your guard up!" Way to almost worry her there, genius.

Humble wasn't a word that suited Rinoa overly well. "I am?" She honestly didn't think she was very princess-like, that was all there was to it really. She knew how much stock he held in princesses though so it meant quite a bit to hear him say it game or no game. Of course she could, that was no contest, but the test would be to see if she could cause knee-bending using both of those methods at once.

Continuing had a much more promising ring to it, she wasn't about to complain. Instead she smiled as he put their rock in with her feather. "A servant is preferred they're willing while slave means you were forced." She's going to try and remember that smile forever, it'd be one of her most cherished memories. "I know what I'm into and I wouldn't have it any other way."

Oh she knew what was coming, the sudden rush of color to her cheeks was obvious proof of that. She didn't need to be forced more than willing to follow the gentle pressure, leaning up slightly thanks to the rather marked difference in their heights.

Alright, most important thing's first here: snogging ensues! Seifer knows what you like, baby, and he's put his all into it. This was an important kiss, everyone involved and any damn voyeurs knew it, so he wanted it to make a very long, lasting impression. With that in mind, she actually gets tilted back to get a little extra deepness in there.

But, all good things must come to an end, and breathing is good. Ahem. He pulls her back upright and lets her go, smiling the biggest damn smile you ever did see. "That... was a year late."

Let's just soak up the moment there for a moment, and then... yes, pranks and stuff. Right, they were having a totally serious discussion. And Princesses. "You are because I say so. Princesses can be spunky, like in the cartoons, ya know?" God, Raijin's speech patterns were rubbing on him. Be glad he couldn't read your mind, young lady, because the thought of using both feminine wiles and mutant powers at once was so cheating.

"Who said I had a choice?" he said, mischievously, "I was taken in at first sight, you know." He laughed, "Alright, good. I wouldn't want you to do anything otherwise. Now, hope you don't mind if I go around introducing you to people as my girlfriend, 'cause that's what you are." Whoa, that felt good. Shivery, even, and redface is returned!

He should know what she likes considering their past together. She has to say though for the record, that she's quite impressed and it's certainly going to leave a very long impression. Not to mention extra dips back were just fun and suited her style just fine.

Breathing is good, as much as she would have been happy to see how much longer she could have gone without air in her lungs. The smile on her face is just as big and ridiculously happy as his but who could blame them? "Yes... that was." She pauses, eying him in amusement. "Just make sure it doesn't take a year again."

Princesses and pranks were serious business. Surely everyone knew that. "If you insist, then I don't mind being your princess too then." Well, good thing for the both of them then that he wasn't Psychic, because she was totally going to pull that off one day cheating or not.

"In that case, I might have to rethink things then. I'd hate to think this wasn't out of your own will." She's smiling, totally at ease again. Why had she been so nervous before? "Just so long as I can go around introducing you to people as my boyfriend, since that's what it means too and fair is fair after all." It did feel good, expect to hear less of your name and more "my boyfriend" comments for the next while... oh was that a blush? She did so love Seifer blushes.

Given their past, he had a really good reason to know what she liked. The prospect of that past coming to the present again was enough to make the boy a little giddy, and the thought that it wasn't gonna end this time would have made a lesser man do a little jig.

"A year?" he scoffed, "Every damn day if I can manage it. Better work on some breathing exercises there." He'd go as far as to say every hour, but classes would put a damper on that. And, you know, sleep.

Goofball grins, anyone? "Alright, that settles it, sorceress-princess. I'll take really good care of you." He'd probably look back fondly on that day, long after it happened, but the day itself would be filled with protests, not a one serious. Unless she brought up her antics to others, and then, if she liked his red face, she'd be in heaven.

"Nah, don't sweat it. I'd have come over to you even if my heart didn't have a mind of its own." Cavity-inducing! Sappy! Romance-novel quality action! He didn't care. "Yeah, you're right, fair's fair. We just go on like that year apart never happened." Hell yes, he was okay with being Rinoa's boyfriend. He'd only dreamed of it off and on for a long time.

If he didn't know or remember she might have reconsidered. Well no not really but it sounded good on paper. They'd be giddy together, was almost impossible not to be if his heart was currently thrumming the same way hers was.

"Daily? I could get used to that, but you might be the one more in need of breathing exercises considering. I'm sure I could find some way to make the air in my lungs last longer if I tried." Then how about every hour as schedule would allow?

They were matching goofball grins at that, talk about cheesy. "Sorceress-Princess it is, with a loyal sorceress-princess knight-consort to take really good care of me. I like that sound of that." Oh it was possible, she'd already proved that air manipulation could have some rather playful uses, that's one thing she could even manage at her current level of skill. Feminine wiles and a good playful gust of wind controlled by his very own sorceress-princess? Seifer didn't stand a chance. It would be a day to remember that was for certain, one that would be long lasting in their memories for a long, long time to come. She might not fully tell people just what went on between them at times, but she was sure that hinting about it would be enough to bring back the flush.

"So long as you're sure this is really what you want." The institute might need to hire a live in dentist, just to keep people healthy from them both. "Year apart? What year apart?" It had never happened after all. Funny, being Seifer's girlfriend had been the one thing to keep her mind occupied once she'd managed to get locked in for that whole mutant thing. IN a way you could say he'd kept her sane.
