For some inexplicable reason, Tiana had woken up abruptly this morning, and without even changing out of her pajamas she rushed her way towards the school's gates. She felt it in her bones--someone was leaving ( ... )

Sanji couldn't have frozen more perfectly if time itself had stopped.

Looked sublimely ridiculous, balancing with one foot in the air, the chef was caught between a desire to straight out bolt back to the school or the complete opposite direction. Oh no, oh no no no... For once in his entire life at the school, Tiana was the last person he wanted to see.

Because he desperately wanted to see her.

Something about seeing her face would make him want to stay. Hearing her voice just then, angry as it was, was like some siren's call, every fibre of his being telling him to turn around and beg for forgiveness... but he couldn't.

Gingerly turning on the spot he put his foot down on the line between the gate and the grounds; neither in nor out, as he looked back at the person he could barely bring himself to look at. He couldn't even think of anything to say.

Well that would be no problem. Tiana had plenty of choice words to day, enough for the both of them.

"So you thought you could just prance away without sayin' a single word, huh? Like nobody would notice that you were here one day and then gone the next?"

She stopped just a few feet in front of him, eyes fixed in an angry glare. Her breath was short and heavy due to exerting her body so early in the morning. But it wasn't enough to stop her from saying what needed to be said.

"That's not how it works, Sanji. It ain't fair to anybody that you just leave the school without warnin'. It ain't fair to your co-workers, to your friends, or to me!"

As she screamed at him, her eyes began to tear up, but a brusque wipe with her sleeve made sure her cheeks remained dry. She would not cry. Not now. Instead she switched her gaze to the ground, sighing tiredly. "You can't just do that. It ain't right."

Standing there as the tirade hit his face like a full force hurricane the cook tried to keep looking at her face, he really did, but at some point his sight dropped to his shoes, the travelling case long since placed beside them. It didn't look as if he was going to be leaving very quickly, and as he listened he wasn't sure he wanted to.

Everything about the situation should have made him want to flee the scene as quickly as possible, but instead of the usual scolded-dog expression he usually wore during Tiana's corrective lessons he just looked rather hollow and shaken. Why was it hitting him now? He'd known he was going, known that Tiana had been upset, upset enough to avoid him the last few days... was that why he'd supposed he could get away with this? All he'd succeeded in doing was waking her up early, exhausting her emotionally and wound up with her screaming at him ( ... )

Sanji was struck by such a sudden typhoon of emotions and turmoil in rapid succession that he was barely able to keep up with each development, let alone process it. He was breaking her heart, she was crying because of him, she was blaming herself because of him... it was all too much.

The last, absurd question was the final nail in the coffin, the cook sinking to his knees at the sight of what his thoughtlessness had reduced her to. Literally, as he barely dared to pick up the small amphibian, his normally dexterous hands reduced to a numb clumsiness from grief.

"Of course, of course of course oh god what did I do to you-" Planting a very disorganized kiss on the minute creatures head the chef gave up on his own ability to hold back the floodgates, tracks of salt water carving their way down his own cheeks under the mop of yellow hair.

"I'm sorry, I'm so so sorry oh please... I'm sorry." His voice faded and cracked, cut off by the hands his head had sunk into.

For a while there was nothing the cook could do but let the tears cascade down his face in shame. He couldn't think straight enough to talk, let alone form coherent sentences. The kiss seemed to returns some aspect of sense to him, however, as he winced deeply at the kind gesture that he couldn't possibly deserve ( ... )

"W-what?" Shocked couldn't even begin to describe how Tiana felt at that very moment. She was astounded, flabbergasted, perplexed, bewildered, and conflicted on top of being shocked.

She stared back at him as her mind tried to process his request. Come with him? She couldn't believe that he actually said that. The chef perfectly knew well how much staying in New York was important to her dreams. Life at sea as a pirate of all things wouldn't get her the restaurant she always wanted. Yet at the same time, it made complete sense that he wanted her to come with him. The man's love for her knew no bounds, and she would only be lying to herself if she claimed that her love for him wasn't as strong, or even stronger, than his ( ... )

All of those reasons he hadn't suggested it before now... he knew them, knew them inside out from telling himself them practically every day since he'd met her, keeping himself in line, thinking about what was best, what was sensible. But, with all of this so suddenly happening, going back to a dream he'd never thought he'd be able to chase with a bunch of lunatics he would never have dreamed would become his family, sense could take a flying leap ( ... )

"That ain't exactly the compromise and promise I had in mind..." She glanced down, noting how warm his hands were around her own. How to the stray onlooker it seemed like Sanji was proposing to her right then and there, which he technically was. The proposal itself was just extremely unusual, non-traditional, and completely crazy ( ... )

Sanji's eyes grew wider with every word. He couldn't believe it, he'd done it! She... she was saying yes!Terms and conditions were hastily nodded to and dedicated to memory, the cook's school boy grin glittering like a crescent moon around his face. He looked as if he was about to leave the ground, and when she'd reached the end of a her speech he promptly did so, leaping up with a great halloo of joy ( ... )

Whether she was literally up in the air or safe in Sanji's arms, Tiana was soaring in happiness. There was no room in her mind or heart for any doubts about her decision. Even if she managed to think of a reason to change her mind, her mouth was too busy being thoroughly kissed for her to voice it ( ... )

Oh, just how little Sanji cared that his trip was to be delayed could not be expressed in words, but he attempted to do so with the line of fervently grateful kisses he was laying along the length of Tiana's shoulder like some human version of Pepe le Pew.

"Take as long as you like!" He punctuated each word with another peck before placing her gently on the ground, though he had absolutely no desire to remove her arms from his neck.

"After all, it's going to be quite a trip!" He grinned with barely concealed elation before giving her one final, long lasting kiss to the lips, every wildest dream suddenly a dream come true. A last squeezing embrace preceded his taking her by the hand and galloping full speed back down the path to the school, laughing as exuberantly as a schoolboy on the precipice of the greatest summer holiday of his life.

An ending this might have been, but just how much of a beginning it was could not have been anticipated by the pessimistic dreamer.
