"Don't be an idiot!" Jessie delivered a swift smack to the back of James' head. "You're the one who spent all our money on your stupid bottlecaps!"

Still, the place was pretty creepy. But cash was cash, and when else would they get an opportunity like this? Besides, maybe they could steal something valuable while they were in the mansion. Big mansions always had valuable stuff in them.

"... You first!" Jessie pulled James in front of her and began to push him towards the door.

James allowed himself to be pushed, making a whining noise akin to that of a kicked dog the whole way. Still, between a creepy mansion and an angry Jessie, he'd take the creepy mansion any day.

When they reached the door, he rang the doorbell, then flinched back as though someone would pop out and attack him. When nothing did, and no one appeared for a few minutes, he tentatively tried the handle.

"Hmm? It's unlocked."

"Must be expecting us." Jessie shoved the door open with a loud creak and peered inside. "Helloooo?"

No answer.

She shuddered but quickly repressed the nervous feeling. One of the two had to be the sensible one.

"Well? Let's go in, then!" Jessie pushed James again, this time right through the doorway and into the mansion.

"Whoa-oh! Eeeee!"

James stumbled in from Jessie's push, arms wheeling keep from falling. He caught his balance and looked around, noting that it actually looked... pretty normal.

"Hey, it's not so bad in here. You were right Jess, they must have been expecting us!"

He walked in more confidently, looking around the foyer. It's got a tile floor, a stair case going up, and opens into a stuffy looking parlor and a bleak dining room.

"This place kind of reminds me of home!" James remarked cheerily, before cupping a hand to his mouth. "Hello, anybody home? We've come about the job!"

Still no reply? How rude. Jessie glanced around to see if there was anything in the foyer that would fit in her pockets.

"Let's go look around before we find Dr. Farrell," Jessie suggested. "We could make some extra cash with some of the stuff lying around here!"

She started towards the dining room where there would probably be some valuable silverware.

"Good idea!"

James trailed after his partner, then left her to inspect some shiny and expensive looking candle holders. He examined them a second, then opened the door of the kitchen and peered inside.

"AAH!"

He jumped back from the door almost immediately, startled. "I think there was something in there!"

Jessie looked up as she was helping herself to some spoons from a drawer.

"Something big and expensive?" Caught up in the moment, Jessie approached the kitchen without a second thought.

James was unsure about all this, but he followed his cohort anyway, keeping close to her arm.

The kitchen was dark, the thick curtains on the only window keeping any sunlight from entering. It looked like it hadn't been used in awhile.

"Wow, this is really spooky," James muttered, looking around, and then he spotted something of interest to him.

"Ooh, a bottle cap!"

He went to pick it up off the counter... and then yelped.

"IT RAN PAST MY FOOT!!!"

Jessie slightly jumped at James' sudden yelp. Was he trying to get them caught? She immediately smacked him, ignoring what he had said.

"Don't yell like that, you idiot! You'll attract somebody's attention!"

"But Jessie!!" James whined, knowing it would probably do him no good. "I'm serious! I think there's something in here."

He was sure to whisper his protests, though, just in case, and moved closer to Jessie, almost hugging her arm. This place was so creepy...

Jessie sighed loudly and rolled her eyes. He really was hopeless. She advanced further into the dark kitchen just to make her point that--

something skittered in a corner.

"Wh-what was that?!"

"I told you! Let's go, Jessie, there's something in-AAAAAAH!"

Without warning, the floor opened up underneath James, and with a surprised yelp he fell into the hole. He grabbed the edges to try and catch himself, but he slipped off the tile and, with a final scream, disappeared into the dark.

... What just happened.

"JAMES, GET BACK HERE!!" Jessie screamed at the hole with obviously no effect. The scurrying in the shadows increased, making Jessie nervously edge back and forth, unsure whether she should risk making a dash for the exit or jump into the hole after James.

In the end, she decided to take a chance with whatever lay at the bottom of the hole in the floor. Hopefully James wouldn't have moved so she'd have something soft to land on.

Jessie's wish came true; James "oofed" in pain as his partner landed hard on him.

"Ow! Hello Jessie..."

He looked up from underneath her and around the room. They seemed to be in an underground lab with a lot of empty cages and giant, broken test tubes.

Slowly, James got up and walked to one. "What is all this?"

"Let's get out of here first, and then we'll figure that out." Still, she couldn't help but wander over to one of the cages for a closer inspection. Something in the corner of the cage shifted and Jessie squeaked a little with fear.

"Jaaames, there's something in there...!"

"I see it."

James huddled closer to Jessie and peered into the dark. When nothing popped out to eat them, he crouched and went halfway into the cage.

"Hello? Nice... little... cat?"

Suddenly, something shot out of the cage, right past James, to fly in the air between the two. It looked like a purple mouse like creature with two tails.

"Lu?"

"AAAAH!!! DEMON FLYING MOUSE!"
