She was only passing by, but she figured she would poke her head in to see what was up. Of course, much to her surprise when she saw a familiar face in there. Gumi smiled, hanging out in the doorway for a few moments and just watching him. He was getting pretty good, she had to admit.

... yep. There's a Gumi watching you.

Gumi didn't go unnoticed, though Derrick hadn't looked up when she stopped by the door. Her surprised melody would get another surprise. A good one, he hoped.

Derrick grabbed a music sheet, placed it on the stand, and started playing this song, knowing that if he waited, he'd lose confidence on playing his surprise to cheer her up. Seeing her sad had been awhile ago, but only now did he really have access to a bass again along with the energy and desire to play it.

Gumi grinned as she started to recognize the notes of the song he was playing. She made her way into the band room, looking around quickly and grabbing a guitar to start playing with him. she set it up about as quickly as she could, then grabbed a seat and moved to sit next to him, joining in when she found a good point to join in at.

It took her a few more notes from there to start singing along with the music.

Derrick looked up when he heard the sounds of things being shuffled around, but he had to quickly return his focus on the song. He couldn't miss notes once he realized what Gumi was doing. Gumi played the guitar? The singing had been expected but not the guitar. Gumi was good, Derrick thought.

A few notes were missed here and there, mostly from nerves, but he played the song to the end.

"Uh... you play guitar?" Maybe a strange question to start with, but it was really the first thing on his mind after trying to play the song well. "... Um. Was practicing that song to cheer you up. You seemed sad... awhile ago."

Gumi smiled sheepishly. "I'm out of practice. I haven't played guitar much at all in the past several months."

... wait, he was-- when she seemed sad ... Gumi had to stop and think about the last time the two of them met, and that's when it hit her as to why she was feeling so bad then.

Oh. There's that sheepish smile again.

"Was it that obvious?" Most of that entire thing had blown over by this point.

"Man, and I was trying so hard not to show it, too ..."

Derrick had only been out of practice for a little over a month. He really had no right to complain. He still thought Gumi was really good.

"..." Oh, he must not have told Gumi. It was hard to keep track sometimes. "I'm a music empath. Hear people and stuff as music. You sounded sad then."

"... oh. Well, that's. Kinda awesome. So then you can hear things that other people can't, right? Kinda like me." Gumi smiled a bit.

"Yeah, have ever since I could remember." Compared to other mutants, Derrick had begun to develop his powers early. He looked up. "Think this is the happiest the school has ever sounded..." Derrick had arrived around the same time Gumi had, and the school had been constantly down in some way, worse in others.

"Well, that must mean things are improving a little ..." Gumi said, leaning back into her chair with a sigh.

"That's a good thing."

"Must be." Derrick put aside the bass for now. "You sound happier too."

"A little, I guess," Gumi smiled. "I'm .. getting over something that's kind of held me back for a long time. Slowly, but it's progress."

He nodded, very glad to hear that. Some progress, and constant by the sound of it, was better than nothing. "It's a good change from what's been happening."

"Sooo ... what have you been up to lately?" She asked, curious. Gumi didn't really want to go into detail about her whole weird love triangle thing.

"Mostly homework. Had a lot to catch up on." Derrick did want to talk about the love triangle he had fallen into because nothing was going to happen. "Almost done with it all."
