Russel had been attracted by the music, curious more about who was making that kind of noise in the middle of class time, and probably taunt them about the possibility of them getting in trouble over it. He opened the door, and was swept away to Neverland.

He looked all around himself, cursing his stupidity for getting wrapped up in someone else's silliness. This was two days in a row that he was going to be inexcusably late to class. After the fight in the library the day before that and the broken window, he was off to a great start.

For a moment Shikamaru was sure he was still asleep. This was certainly NOT his school, and must be a dream. However, his dreams were never so... fanciful. In fact, he dreamed plain ordinary dreams for the most part, with ordinary activities and an ordinary life ( ... )

He glanced over at the ninja--or so he assumed, because his clothes looked like he'd just dropped out of a ninja movie of some kind--and shrugged. He hefted his rather large and heavy backpack a bit higher on his shoulder. "Uh, yeah. Someone was playing some weird music." He frowned. "Does this kind of thing happen a lot around here?"

"Wouldn't know, first time I've found myself trapped in a situation like this," Shikamaru shrugged. This was such a drag, while the skyline was very nice here, he didn't appreciate this at all. Being trapped in some kind parallel world thing. Definitely seemed purposeful. You don't create a situation like this on accident.

"Troublesome," He was somewhat hoping the other guy knew something more than just that, "I was taking a nap in the music room. Woke up here. Due to my augmented wardrobe, I'm going to guess this is a reality warp of some kind." The ninjaish boy sighed, "Name's Shikamaru."

"Russel," he replied simply. Oddly, Russel was completely unchanged. "Dammit, I'm going to be late to class again." He sighed dramatically. "I can't catch a break, can I?"

Shikamaru stared at Russel a few moments. Yes, the proper response to being trapped in a strange landscape created by one of your classmates is 'I'm going to be late to class.' Shikamaru sighed, "Guess you can't. So should we try to find out what's causing this, or just try to escape without that?"

"Assuming this works on logic, finding the source sounds logical. But something tells me it's not going to be that easy," he pulled the second strap over his other shoulder, actually wearing the backpack properly. Dammit, it's a forest, unless there's some dead foliage around, he was going to be pretty damn useless if things went south.

He thought through a few strategies, but he'd really never dealt with anything like this before.

"Logic doesn't matter for this. Things have rules, this place does too. Just a matter of finding out what they are," Shikamaru sighed, giving a few test swings with the kunai he found in his holster. Useful, but too stylized. A simple combat knife would have been more efficient. "My abilities involve manipulating objects and people with my shadow. It's best to know our own capabilities before we do anything here. Until we figure out the rules this place has."

If Shikamaru treated whatever this was like a board game, it would be easier to come up with a strategy. Be it a new dimension, a shift in reality, or an illusion. It was real enough to have rules. Right now he would treat this like the real world... just not. "You want to pick a direction?"

Russel crouched, and poked around in the debris on the forest floor until he came up with a stick that didn't look green. It moved and shifted in his hand. "It's dead plant material for me," he replied. As a demonstration, he molded the stick into a clone of the kunai Shikamaru had in his hand. From a molecular standpoint, this place seemed the same as the normal world. "I don't know how you do in biology, but in those terms, it looks like it's the same rules we're familiar with, otherwise I couldn't do this."

"That would add to my theory this is not a sensory illusion. Both our powers work outside of natural senses, but work here. However, if we are in a more complex telepathic illusion our brain would replicate our powers. We still also have to deal with the idea that reality has been warped to make this real, or that someone crafted a new reality around us. Both technically possible, and all three equally troublesome." Shikamaru reached his hand out, his shadow moving across the forest floor into other shadows. He jerked his arm causing a tree limb to snap. Granted, Shikamaru was not going to share he couldn't do much with his powers beyond containment. Tree limbs were just less than durable. Shikamaru kept an eye out for dead flora, to help Russel. For now they would have to work together. Which was annoying as it involved work ( ... )

"That makes sense. Whoever's doing this is really good at it," he summarized. He kept the knife in hand, just in case. He was no slouch in a fight, but he really didn't like being stuck in a place of someone else's creation. It made him feel too vulnerable. "And that's probably the same guy that thought it was a good idea to put a bunch of teenagers with powers they don't know how to control yet in one big group."
