Hakkai slowly made his way down the stairs, finally giving up on sleep from all the nightmares. Planning on getting some tea to calm his nerves he made his way to the kitchen. Stopping suddenly he noticed the light in the kitchen was on, he couldn't help but be curious who else would be up at this hour. Stepping into the kitchen he noticed a blond boy who looked to be about 14 or 15.

Stepping quietly so he didn't alarm the other he made his way over to the table, noticing there was already water boiling on the stove. Sitting quietly and generally not bringing attention to himself, he wondered how long the other had been awake to have made all this food.

Matthew glanced up and put down his fork to snag a cup. Someone up this early probably wanted tea or coffee. He leaned over to look through the tea packets.

"Earl grey, green tea, or...I got some herbal stuff as well. Mint tea. Chamomile if you're trying to get back to sleep." Matt gave the sauce another stir and lifted it off the heat. He poked a glance at the cookies and decided a few more minutes.

"Food is for all if you want some." He said after another few minutes, "But it's still early I guess. To eat."

"Oh thank you, green tea will be fine." Hakkai had to admit he was pleased to see a student that wasn't hostile or generally traumatizing to ones heath. "I know why I'm up this early...but why are you? Most students wouldn't even think of leaving their rooms till later than this."

"Cooking." Matthew wouldn't normally be this brief but really cooking as stress relief only worked if he was constantly cooking. So he put in a bag for tea and grabbed the kettle with a potholder as it boiled.

"Sugar or plain?" He let the tea steep to the side and started poaching eggs. The cookies would be done by now and he pulled them out and set them aside.

Hakkai was momentarily startled with the brief reply...but then remembered how he was when he was younger. "Plain please. The sugar seems to take away from the taste." Hakkai sat back, content to just watch the other. Learning what he could just from the boys movements and expressions. It may not have been a mutant ability but living with his roommate had some advantages, such as being able to tell what someone was feeling without being told.

Matthew gave him a tiny smile as he passed along the cup of tea, and turned back to his pancakes. He didn't want to seem unfriendly, but he'd really thought he'd be safe for another hour or so. It wasn't bad to have company he supposed.

"Sorry. Stressful couple of weeks." He murmured, hopefully as an apology of sorts for his curt behavior and an explanation in turn.

Hakkai smiled gratefully taking the tea "Yes, I can most defiantly understand that." Taking a small sip he was pleased that it was made perfectly, not that he would have complained. "This place can be...overwhelming at the best of times. Honestly, I'd be surprised if you weren't."

Hakkai let himself trail off, and just sipped at his tea. Noting in his head that this student cooked when he was upset, knowing this knowledge could be useful later.

Matthew just smiled a little. It was nice to hear someone else feel that overwhelmed sensation as well. He took out his eggs and eyed them. Perhaps it would have been better to wait. He sighed.

"Do you like eggs Benedict?" He eyed the poor poached eggs a little mournfully. He never really did think through what he was cooking when he was like this. He set the eggs aside and pulled over an empty bowl. Maybe a cake next. Nice and time consuming.

"Yes. Though I wouldn't want to...trouble you." Hakkai felt like he was in some way using the kid, though it just wasn't in him to deny him his cooking. He supposed maybe this is how Mr. Burg felt when he asked if he could help him to clean.

Matt brightened a little. At least some wouldn't go to waste. He dished it out carefully, taking his time with the toast, and held out a plate.

"Do you need anymore tea?" Matt had already turned back to the stove, measuring out flour and cocoa with practiced ease. Chocolate cake then.

Hakkai gratefully took the plate, seeing as how he missed dinner the night before. "Thank you, and yes please, I would love some more tea." He hadn't even realized until just this moment how completely relaxed he was.

Whether it was just being with another calm individual or the tea, he didn't care. "So I take it you cook often, you are very skilled at this." He felt that even the small restaurants in Berryville couldn't compare to this meal.

Matthew gave a little shrug and calmly snatched up the cup. Another tea sachet and some more water and he set it aside again. He broke eggs into his batter and stirred.

"I do cook quite often yes. Not like this though usually. And not much since I've gotten here." Matthew spoke quietly and took another few bites of his pancakes before jumping down to find some cake pans.

Hakkai knew something was bothering the other, you didn't make a living gambling not knowing how to read people. Though if there's one thing he's learned, it's to wait it out. This student may not let it out today or next week, but he eventually will. Hakkai just hoped he was there to run damage control, if there's one thing you don't want young mutants to feel, it's stress. He absently removed his monocle and gently rubbed his eye.

Hakkai suddenly realized something "I'm sorry, I don't think I caught your name. I'm Hakkai Cho, I teach passive abilities here." He couldn't believe he forgot to introduce himself earlier, It's usually the first thing he does when meeting a new face.

Matthew gave him a small smile. It wouldn't hurt to try to cheer up, he supposed.

"I'm Matthew Williams. I'm a null. Well. I nullify powers." He held out the tea cup and made himself a cup as well. He put plenty of milk and sugar in it and sipped carefully.

He took the tea cup with a grateful smile. Learning that Matthew could nullify powers immediately peaked his interest. "Well, I can honestly saw your the first person I've met that could do that. Do you need to touch them or just be near them?"

He knew that Matthew could be a great asset to the institute with his ability. Especially if someone lost control of their powers on campus. "Before I forget, I suppose you could say I'm an energy manipulator. Though I mostly just use it to heal or create shields."

Matthew gave him a small smile, "I'm the only person I know with those powers as well. It's interesting but makes them difficult to control. Ms. Rogue helps."

Matthew nodded to his explanation but he wasn't sure what it exactly entailed. He was interested though.
