As soon as her father had pulled up in front of the school, Ino had jumped out, pausing briefly to give her father a quick kiss and a few murmured words of gratitude before rushing off in the infirmary's general direction. It had only been three days since she had woken alone in the makeshift bed she had shared with Tommy, three short days since she had discovered that her boyfriend hadn't just decided to take a quick little jaunt out to some mystery location; it had been three days of sitting in her room at home, promising herself that she wouldn't worry herself sick about someone who wouldn't want her to do such a thing and failing miserably. After all, it had been her fault he had been taken; if she had just woken up when he left, maybe she could have ( ... )

He hadn't noticed her standing there at first. He was propped up against a pile of pillows, flicking through the tv channels at high speed that it probably just looked like a blur of flashing images to someone else. It was literally the only think he could do to keep himself amused, since he hadn't had a chance to ask anyone to get him his games consoles so he wouldn't have to just sit there. It was only when she said something that his eyes flicked away from the screen. He watched her for a moment, a small part of him being relieved that she'd not stayed the whole vacation and come to find him, but another wanting to be left on his own.

"Hey," he answered monotonously, flicking through a couple more hundred channels before he got back to the beginning and sighed, leaving it on a channel that was nothing but white noise.

"How was your vacation? Mine kind of sucked."

She couldn't help but to wince slightly at the last two sentences he had thrown her way, although she managed to cover it up nicely. Hadn't she worried about this happening ever since her parents had practically dragged her back home for break? Going home had a been a bad idea--a terrible idea, actually--and she knew quite well that, had the situation been reversed, it would have been a long time before she would have let him forget how he left her alone. Her lips pressed together in a thin line, the corners of her mouth turning down as she wondered how he had felt when he returned to the school and found her nowhere to be seen. Had he thought she had abandoned him? She almost wished she could scan his thoughts just once to see what he thought of her at that particular moment, but she was almost terrified of what kind of thoughts she would find.

However, she couldn't stand around and hide behind silence forever. Whether he was angry at her or not--and she certainly hoped he wasn't--she headed over to his bedside, her eyes ( ... )

Tommy watched her for just a moment, and chose to scowl at his bedsheets instead. Even though he'd wanted time on his own, he was kind of glad she was here. She at least cared enough to cut her vacation short when she found out he was back--or maybe it had just been a coincidence? Who knew. But she was the first person to visit, and though he wasn't in much of a mood for it, he did appreciate it somewhere, deep under all that frustration at himself for being stuck in a hospital bed and his anger at the sonofabitch who did this to him. Oh, and also that resentment that his brother--his only family--had abandoned him. At this point, Tommy wasn't even sure if they were brothers anymore.

"Still better than mine," he snorted, tugging at his medical bracelet and scowling at it like it had offended him greatly.

[looking at Tommy in the infirmary with his legs in casts, for a moment Karen is about to think: it would be you, wouldn't it]

[and then she thinks about who the rest of her mentor group are]

[and the class she teaches]

[and dismisses that thought.]

Hey, Tommy.

[He moves uncomfortably on the bed when he spots her, and choses to scowl at his sheets rather than keep looking at her. Someone isn't happy to be here.]

Hey. [if she's not here to tell him he's about to get healed, he's not really that interested]

[she is alas not. Sorry, Tommy.]

I heard what happened - I'm sorry. [she looks at him for a moment, in a slightly strained but fond sort of way, and then sighs] How are you feeling?

[if anything, his face is a good indication of precisely how he's feeling.] Why? It's not like you broke my legs. [he pauses, forcing a wry smile at her.] Oh just great.
