If there was any change in the fellow's bearing, it was not visible to Volly; he had never been very good with reading people, and was more interested in talking and listening to them besides. Of course, it was difficult for him to talk or listen (let alone pick up on any personal cues, be they minuscule or major) when he was thus entranced by something so curious. He could not help but to stare, craning his neck out still further from the bookshelf. "Oh, I am sure that you must be very proud."

He then turned away for a moment, casting another look at his own mottled wings. "I sometimes wish I were more shiny, or that I had more shining things," he added, as though it were a secret. "But it is all right, I suppose, to just be grey. It is a very nice color." He snapped one wing open and looked proudly at his associate, as though to illustrate the hue's merits.

After this little display, Volly perked up a little, suddenly wondering if the two of them had anything in common besides coloring. "Tell me," he began, his tail swishing against the wood in anticipation, "might you happen to be lost?"

Proud? Well, he certainly supposed he could be. He hadn't ever really thought much of it. It was his and it was a bit annoying sometimes to manage all of it, but beyond that he hadn't given it much thought. No one really had at the labs, as far as he really knew. They'd all seemed to be much more interested in his training or his growth or whatever else seemed to cross their fancy.

"It's a good color for camouflage," he offered, referring to the grey of Volatilus' scales and not his own coloring. "Especially on more overcast days."

However, he couldn't quite say he'd gotten lost, since he knew more or less where he was. So instead he went with the equally true answer of "I was merely exploring." It was true enough and if he hadn't gotten lost it wasn't like it hadn't been a possibility.

"Oh, yes, it is very good for that," Volly agreed, pride obvious in his tone - although it was difficult for him to look at the situation practically, especially with something silvery right before his eyes. "It is a nice color," he admitted again, but added, "even if it is not shiny."

His posture drooped a little when he heard that his visitor was not also lost - he liked having things in common, and so gave a disappointed little "oh" in reply - but he immediately regained himself a short second afterward. "Why, if you are not lost, then you must know where we are," he said, happy to have reached this conclusion by himself. "I am looking for the kitchen. Do you know how to get there?"

If Sephiroth had been exposed to more fantasy-type stories in his childhood he wouldn't have been at all surprised that Volly seemed to prize shininess over utility. Since he hadn't, however, he merely noted the fact down for later use. He wasn't intending to need it, but things rarely went as one expected.

"I do," he answered with a nod. He hadn't had much of a reason to go there, but he knew where it was.

"Oh, I am glad," Volly replied. "Will you tell me how to get there?" After a moment, he belatedly amended that sentence with an over-loud "Please?" having realized a bit late that he had left it out. He did hate to ask for directions, but he was quite hungry, and his new friend had been so nice when they had spoken about colors that he could not pass up the opportunity. "Also, what is your name? I am Vola-tilus."

Sephiroth wouldn't have minded if the sentence had remained unamended. It would have been no different from most of the requests made of him. Not to mention it was a good deal less bothersome even then. True, he might not have been originally headed that way, but it was easy enough to change where he was heading.

"I could show you where it is?" he offered hesitantly. He wasn't at all sure his directions would prove the most helpful, after all. A moment later, he answered the second question. "I'm Sephiroth."
