Until she heard the sound of someone typing. Did someone have a computer outside? Following the sound, she came across a student sitting on his own, typing on a laptop.
Pausing for only a moment, Elysia approached him, coming from the front so she wouldn't startle him. "Hello," she said kindly. "May I sit next to you?"

He slid over to one side to give her some room.
Remembering his manners, he said, "My name's Jeremie."

When her attention turned to the code on the screen, Jeremie felt a bit more comfortable. Computers and machines were easy to understand. "I'm working on an encryption algorithm that incorporates recursive behavior much like a fractal."
...Okay, computers were easy to understand if you were a total geek.

When he explained what he was doing though, she blinked once. Paused. Blinked twice. Then tilted her head to the side in confusion. "What does that mean?"

'Simplify...simplify...' he silently reminded himself before he launched into a far more technical explanation.
"Well, recursion is when you repeat the same process over and over again. Kind of like 'wash, rinse, repeat' on a shampoo bottle only you never stop washing and rinsing." He opened a new window and started typing. "You can do the same thing in math, repeating an equation over and over endlessly. Some people use these equations to make fractals, which are just shapes that are repeated on various scales. They're kind of pretty actually."
He typed in a few commands before executing the process. The screen went black just before an endless shape appeared on the screen.

When he brought up the shape on the screen, Elysia's eyes widened and her face light up. She clapped her hands together in delight, leaning forward to get a better look in amazement. "Wow! You made that just by doing a math equation? It really is pretty! You can make other shapes by making the equation different?"

He made a few fast modifications before running it again, the image changing radically. After a few moments, he repeated the process to an equally drastic change.

She meant no harm by her words, looking at him with genuine interest.

Heck, his father's co-worker had been investigated following the memory loop. The missing wife had been found via old fashioned detective work.
"I hadn't thought about that."
