Can I ask you about self-defense class though?

[ Glances up, then starts searching under other piles of paper for his list. ]

Sure, ask away! You're ... Alto, right?

[blushes at being remembered just after one rather brief conversation over the network]

Y-yes. May I come in?

Of course! That's what the sign on the door says.

[ Continues to dig under files for a second, then glances up and smiles wryly. ]

Sorry for the mess, seems like I've got a lot of catching up to do.

[comes in and nervously takes a seat]

Uh, I kinda just want to know what the lessons for the self-defense will be like.

[ Victoriously tugs his list from a pile of paper and grins. ]

[ Scans the list, trying to remember something for a second -- ]

Well, you'd be in the beginners class right? You haven't taken any self defense classes before? No combat training or martial arts?

Well, nothing official. Wait- that's not quite right. I mean, I did take some classes before, kendo and basic unarmed combat. But the focus then really was on how to make the movements look good, and not... anything practical.

Hey, that's still pretty good. You're probably a little ahead of some other people in that respect --

[ Scribbles that beside your name on the list. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER. ]

But, self defense is basically about not getting your ass kicked. It's not the same as say...

[ He hesitates... faintly amused ]

Combat instruction classes, which seem to be all about getting your ass kicked. It's not too hardcore, if that's what you're worried about.

[ He frowns at you curiously. ]

Are you worried about it?

No, I'm fine with hard work. My old man was a slave driver. Just- I'm afraid that what I do may be too showy...

[and then there's his own lack of control over his abilities as well. shifting genders in the middle of a class may not be the best thing that can happen...]

Showy? Well, if you started performing in front of the class you might get some funny looks but... I'm assuming that's unlikely.

[ Leans back in his chair thoughtfully. ]

Most self defense classes are mimic classes though. We show you how to do something, you pair up with someone and try it out!

[blushes harder, because he may just end up performing out of habit anyway]

I see... And it's all going to be unarmed combat?

[ Raises an eyebrow at your blush and smiles again. ]

Mostly. We'll probably have a few sessions on disarming people using various weapons too, and maybe a little on how to use them yourself. See how well we do.

[ Studies you a second, then leans forward again. ]

You seem kinda nervous.

[backs away automatically. teachers in the States need to learn to keep their distance.]

[ Shrugs nonchalantly and leans back in his chair. ]

People are here for all kinds of reasons, and I haven't exactly pulled the files of all the students here. I figure if it's something I need to know, people will tell me.

... well, there is something. I'd ask if you can keep it a secret, but it'll probably come up in class anyway- and... [mumbles something]
