Tharkay had heard there was a dragon on the ship and could not entirely deny that he was curious. In all his travels, he had only ever met one other and had thought it a great improbability; that there should be two such creatures on earth was alternately intriguing and bemusing. He had already explored what parts of the ship were open to him- and several that were not- and saw nothing wrong with investigating belowdecks since it included Lien's personal domain ( ... )

"Not in the least, though I am glad you deign at last to make your presence known." Her voice rumbled through the deck; one could literally feel the sarcasm. "But tell me, to what end is it that you would risk disturbing me?"

'Curiosity' did not seem an appropriate response, so Tharkay replied, "I have only seen one other dragon in my life. He was not quite as... impressive."

Lien raised a scaly brow. "I imagine that is one dragon more than most people on this planet," she observed, but despite her deadpan tone of voice she was obviously intrigued. "To my knowledge there are very few of us here. Where did you meet this dragon?"

"Nineteenth century Macao," Tharkay admitted. "I cannot say what happened to him- he was a black dragon built along similar, though slightly smaller lines- but he somehow vanished. That is something very difficult for anyone to achieve, let alone a twenty-ton creature with teeth the size of a man's forearm."

Nineteenth century? Lien had to pause over that for a moment to remind herself of what that meant in terms of the passage of time, on this planet, but she seemed rather surprised - in a composed sort of way - once she realised just how long ago that meant.

"You have travelled through time, then," she said; "or you are unusually long-lived for a human." Ordinarily this alone would have been enough to sustain her interest, but for now it was eclipsed significantly by the matter of the dragon that Tharkay claimed to have met. That he should have been black in colour but otherwise similar to herself, and have encountered this man two hundred years ago, and have vanished suddenly ...

... For it to be nothing but coincidence was near impossible. Xiang must indeed have found his way to Earth all those years ago, just as reported ... and this man had met him, and now, against all probability. He was here. Good fortune indeed ...

"What more can you tell me of him?" she asked, watching Tharkay keenly. "Did he have a companion?"

Tharkay almost smiled. "It has been an inadvertent voyage on my part. I have a certain taste for exploration, but I had never before considered the time stream part of it."

He looked at Lien with mild curiosity. "His name was Temeraire and he had a companion in Captain William Laurence, a British officer and a gentleman. I cannot say what happened to them; they vanished, I went in search of them and I found myself in an Istanbul substantially altered from my own. I assume that they are somewhere in this world, but I doubt I shall ever see their like again." The last was self-directed, almost wistful.

The dragon's great eye narrowed a little. "A military officer?" she inquired with something akin to disgust - and then, after the briefest of pauses, and almost dismissively, she went on, "No matter; you may indeed see their like again, for I have good reason to believe Temeraire is the very dragon I seek, and I have voyaged here knowing that this planet and age is where - and when - I will find him." She smiled, showing not a single sharp tip of a tooth. "Perhaps this officer, this Captain William Laurence, is with him too. Perhaps you will meet him again."

Tharkay smiled cynically. "Indeed, but a good one, for all that. I found it equally astonishing."

He could not quite hide his surprise. "Temeraire and Laurence are here as well? That... would be...." He paused and was, for some time, lost in his reflections. "I should welcome it, if I ever saw them again. Have you any knowledge of their whereabouts?"

So it seemed this man was on rather good terms with both Xiang and the Earth man he called his companion ... What uncommon luck. This could prove useful indeed. It would be simple enough, for now, to share what she knew and play the part of one interested simply in restoring the lost prince to his rightful place.

"It is rather unfortunate, but I have been informed that they have allied themselves with Charles Xavier and his X-Men," she replied. "Do you know of them?"
