Naminé sat in silence at the little round table outside the coffee shop, shivering in the cold wind that blew along the street, icy on her exposed face and fingers; at least the rest of her was warm in a puffy blue down jacket, jeans and boots. A cup of hot chocolate sat untouched on the table, steam rising gently from a puncture in the plastic lid. She kept her head down, holding a napkin to her swollen lip to staunch the bleeding where it had split. The girls from the local high school that had given it to her had seemed spurred on rather than put off by her meek demeanor; likely they had expected a mutant to have more fight in her, and were perfectly willing to show greater cruelty in the face of her tentative rebuffs.
Strangers glanced at her curiously as they passed, but no one else seemed to recognize her as a student of Xavier's. Naminé had suffered no worse than the split lip and a few bruises, but she was a little shell-shocked; she had never experienced that kind of petty torment before. Those girls hadn't known or cared what she might have done or not done as a mutant; all that had mattered to them was that she was a mutant.
