For all the compliments Courfeyrac had given her about her organisational skills, Pepper arrived at the dining room very impressed; the decorations were really lovely, and something smelled absolutely divine - she was caught rather speechless for a moment, still watching Courfeyrac bounce around the room. He was energetic to an almost alarming point, but at least it showed a great deal of vitality. Naturally Pepper assumed from his looks and from knowing that he and Enjolras went to university together that he couldn’t be much older, or indeed younger, than Enjolras himself. Truth be told Pepper really couldn’t remember the last time she had attended a birthday party for someone turning twenty three, though she was pretty sure that it hadn’t looked as sophisticated as this did.

Once revived from her reverie, Pepper did naturally take a moment to wish Enjolras himself a happy birthday, handing over her present for him; admittedly Pepper was not so well acquainted with Enjolras that she knew of any appropriate gifts, though delving into the realms of politics had intimidated her a little too much to have allowed her to glean a present idea from that. Thus Pepper had settled for the somewhat easier route; cufflinks. If there was anything Pepper knew how to pick out for a man, it was cufflinks.

[ooc: shush. they’re ... patriotic cufflinks.]

Courfeyrac spotted Pepper soon after she walked in and, still wearing his apron, zoomed over to greet her. "Bienvenue! I am terribly glad to see you. Can I offer you an aperitif? I recommend the muscat. It's delicious."

Enjolras had graciously thanked Pepper for the gift and began to carefully unwrap it as Courfeyrac in turn bounded over to greet her. "Don't let him get you drunk," he warned her, without looking up from his task, the joke tempered with a half-serious, half-amused smile.

Courfeyrac pouted at him. "Aw, Enjolras, must you malign my character? I've gone through all this trouble to keep myself on my best behavior this evening, too. I enter in the non-exploded main course as evidence. Miss Potts, I assure you that I can be a perfect gentleman, despite my best efforts to the contrary. I cannot shake free of my participle of nobility, or my aristocractic upbringing all the time." Courfeyrac's passing attempts at seriousness came to naught, however, as he was distracted by something shiny. "Ooh, what did you get Enjolras?"

"Cufflinks!" Enjolras exclaimed as he deftly exchanged them for the ones he currently wore in his sleeves. "Thank you Pepper, they're lovely," he said solemnly, pocketing his old cufflinks and holding up an arm so Courfeyrac could inspect the new ones. "And I'm not intentionally maligning your character, Courfeyrac; I'm just saving Pepper's."

[ooc: lmao I have literally spent about an hour trying to work out if I can end a sentence with a posessive apostrophe... aaaaah.]

"Nothing to worry about, I can hold my alcohol." Pepper had had enough years to practice with her alcohol tolerance, and was quite proud of it now, considering that the first time she had half a glass of wine it made her loopier than a... well, let's just say it wasn't her best night ever. "Not to mention I know when to stop." She said this with a teasingly stern glance to Courfeyrac, before glancing to Enjolras, quite relieved that he liked the cufflinks. "You're welcome. I'm glad you like them - and thank you for protecting my character. I'll keep my eye on him," she added, maintaining her light and relaxed tone, referring to Courfeyrac.

"Ooh, very nice," Courfeyrac said appreciatively. "You have a good eye, Pepper, but really!" He pouted at her. "Why must everyone call my character into question this evening? I have been on my best behavior and everything. I swear it! Nothing's exploded, I haven't seduced anyone... I may have offered port to a dragon, but he didn't take it! Pepper, what would you like? I will be a perfect gentleman the entire evening and even insist on my hated participle if it will make you feel better, Enjolras."
