Naturally Pepper was worried about the students under her care; she didn't want any of them to feel uncomfortable at the school, or feel pressured by their parents to leave (or stay, for that matter), and she knew that the media fall-out since the field trip certainly wasn't helping anyone. However, at the same time, Pepper had no idea if she would be able to help in any way. Shove her in front of a pack of raving reporters and Pepper was in her element, but in front of a single teenage boy? That was a whole other story completely.

"Come in," she called, smoothly moving aside some of the homework she was marking, looking up to the door.

Declan creaked the door open and walked in. "Ugh, hi, Ms. Potts." He said, unsure of what to call her. Actually he was unsure about a lot of things, hence his visit.

He went over to the desk and sat down on the opposite end of the desk. He didn't really know where to start.

"Oh, Declan - hi there." Pepper immediately sat up a little straighter, more attentive.

"Sit down," she said, even as Declan did so, trying not to look too concerned. You know, not weirdly concerned, because she was concerned, he was a student under her care but - well, you know. "You said you wanted to talk, right?"

"Um, yeah. It's just I don't know about things right now. My dad has been calling me nonstop about the incident." Declan said. He was rather straightfaced while saying it. It was rather hard for him to be emotional.

"What's he been saying?" Pepper frowned as she spoke, though not unkindkly, only in concern. If there was one thing she knew, it was that parents were good at dousing their childrens' spirits sometimes, even if they had the best intentions in mind. Of course, Pepper had no idea what Declan's father had specifically been saying, but she was going to find about, and she doubted that it would be particularly enjoyable to listen to.

"Just the usual. That no one can know I'm a mutant. He's ashamed of me. His political power could be in jeopardy if people realized that I go here... I guess I was on a youtube video or something. I didn't even do anything except run." Declan said, not even even mentioning his girl problems right now. And oh boy, was he having them.

Pepper's frown grew more uncomfortable and irritated as she listened. It did not surprise her that parents would act this way; it was a peculiar level of protectiveness mixed with a fear of change and difference and selfishness. Yet it still bothered Pepper immensely to hear about it in detail.

"Has he said anything about pulling you from the school or something?" She leant back in her chair, thoughtful. She too was having an interesting time on the relationship front, but at current those problems of hers weren't crossing her mind.

He shrugged. "He's suggested it. I don't think he would, because then he wouldn't know what to do with me. I think they're idle threats, honestly." Declan said, sitting back.

He sighed aloud and looked at his mentor. She seemed a bit irritated by his father. Join the club. He was a bit overbearing, and Declan was tired of hearing how he was the blacksheep of the family. He was a pretty decent kid, aside from getting caught with Holly J with her shirt unbuttoned...

Well getting caught somewhere with a girl with her shirt unbuttoned was definitely not going to put you in good stead amongst some, but Pepper wasn't really one to judge. Her boss had a history of some interesting public spectacles, and she a history of cleaning up after them.

"Taking you out of the school wouldn't get you or your father anywhere, anyway, if you ask me. Besides taking you on potentially dangerous field trips, this place does a lot more good than harm." She paused. "I guess the whole thing's probably bothering you anyway, though."

"I don't think he's actually going to, but I'm on thin ice with him. It's just a lot to deal with right now. Well that and the cat is out of the bag with my exgirlfriend." Declan said looking down. Now was as good as any to talk about it.

"You and your ex?" Pepper arched her brows, though not in a judgemental manner, more surprised than anything. Sometimes she found herself forgetting that these kids might have more-down-to-earth problems, and frankly hearing about girl troubles relaxed Pepper considerably. "Did something happen?"

"Umm, yeah. Do you know Holly J? She's a student here, and we dated at our last school. Things are kinda messy though between us." He said with a shrug. Declan didn't mind talking about it. It was just a little confusing.

"I've met her, yes." Pepper winced a little, sympathetically. "I'm guessing this happened before you guys came to this school then, right? If anything I'd have thought you two would have wanted to keep your distance, especially if things are messy."

"Actually, we broke up because she was coming here. I just didn't know that. She said some boarding school. It only got messy when I transferred here." Declan said.

Up until he came to XI, Holly J and him were on pretty good terms. It was just that neither one had told the other they were a mutant.

"I can imagine." Pepper leaned back in her chair a little, somewhat more relaxed than before. This whole talking-about-problems deal wasn't as hard or as daunting, really, as she had envisioned it might be. "Have you guys... been able to talk? You know, without the messy side of things getting in the way? From what I've learned it's better to try and talk about if you can't avoid each other."

"That didn't go over so well either. She kept trying to blame me for everything. I didn't even want it to go like that. I just wanted to talk. She then tried to accuse me of manipulating her friend, who I will add came on to me while she still had a boyfriend." Declan said, narrowing his eyes.

It was really ridiculous. In Holly J's perfect world someone had to be the bad guy. Guess it was him.
