If nothing else had impressed upon her the excellent security of the Xavier Institute, the fact that her grandmother was willing to have her dropped off discreetly in a plain car and left to find her way inside without any bodyguard whatsoever had done it completely. Staring up at the brick edifice in front of her, Tenel Ka breathed in deeply and let it out slowly.
The air didn't quite taste like freedom, but it was something like. She nodded to herself, satisfied for now.
Other students walked here and there in the courtyard, but there were no immediate signs that this was anything but an ordinary boarding-school. The front door, at least, was imposingly obvious. There might be further instructions inside: a map, or a professor willing to guide her to her room, or similar.
Tenel Ka hefted the strap of her carrier bag up on her shoulder, gave a brief rock on the balls of her feet to settle her backpack, and headed determinedly for the entrance.
