At this point, boy, the health of the plants is more important than the presentation. I'm sure the hedge can stand to be uneven for a while onger while I make sure that it lives through the winter.

At least it will be temporarily in keeping with its partner, and if it dies then the problem could simply be solved by its removal. I see no problem with this.
