I think tossing away the TV is a good thing. You've got the Internet. I think you don't need it, and you're right in framing it as a drug.
A few problems, there. For one, my computer has been acting up lately, particularly with video. So that eliminates watching streaming video, etc. Also, when I lived on my own, I don't get cable--and not being able to stomach network shit (plus with the new Digital transition)--this basically means "no TellaVision". However, I have a roommate for whom cable is a necessity. Add to that the fact that I am home a ton (being unemployed) with nothing but freetime but no money to go out and leave the house. Imagine a heroin addict in a similar situation (not that I'm that bad, but you get the point).
Likewise, video games can also be drugs, so we have to be careful how we engage them too. A few months ago I picked up "Civilization IV", and have quite enjoyed it. It's amazing how 8 hours can get swallowed doing something without doing anything.
I agree, but there is a bunch more going on with vids. For one, they take active participation. For two, they don't have ads, which is my single biggest complaint with TellaVision, and which are often the reasons why I end up shutting off the TellaVision. I get angry being forced to either be subject to them or to get up and do something for "just the amount of time they are on," when watching a program.

I haven't lived anywhere near Kansas City since I was 15, thank the Baby Jebus. Although I have lived in Oregon since then, I've moved extensively--e.g., a couple years ago, I moved 3 times in less than 12 months. And I've just moved to Eugene at the end of those 3 moves--I LOVE EUG--into Triflorian less than a year ago. And both my TellaVision loving brother Satan and I plan on being here for at least 5 years. Here, you can see why ;-).
