there's a variety of ways to look at this, but I choose to believe that it is because they simply don't know any better. They want social acceptance, but they don't know how to get it, so they settle for social attention done in maladaptive ways... and then wonder why they are still malcontent.

The Simplest Way that I've found for maintaining Social Relationships/Bonds/Connections/etc. is to simply pay attention to the Relationship/Bond/Connection/etc. itself. I.e., keep the Commune-I-cation oriented toward Maintaining the Relationship.

Wee humans all too often engage in destructive behaviors (both to ourselves and/or to others) due to significant ImBalances such as InSecurities, replayed Traumas, and other unresolved Issues.

In Practice, I've found that simply acknowledging that Feelings will inevitably get hurt in the course of Relationships, but that I Value their Relationship more than the Memes I allow to Possess me (because I do).
