In honor of Hilarie Burton and Chad Michael Murray leaving the show as regulars on the cast, I wanted to do a little something to show my love for the characters of Peyton Sawyer and Lucas Scott. So, over the next couple weeks, I will be putting together a picspam that tells the entire story of one of my all-time favorite couples.

Part I - Season One
post one - your art matters
“My heart is yours to fill or bust. To break or bury or wear as jewelry. Whatever you prefer”
Junk: Peyton Sawyer. You see her webcam? In her bedroom. I hear she’s naked on it, like, all the time. What? I hear things.
Lucas: You know, I saw her the other night. She almost ran me over, of course.
Skills: Yeah, she’s pretty fine, huh?
Lucas: She’s all right.
Lucas: “That’s me inside your head.”
Peyton: What?
Lucas: NOFX. *singing* That’s me inside your head…. It’s the lyrics from-
Peyton: I know the song.
--
Lucas: Can I ask you a question?
Peyton: It’s a free country.
Lucas: Why are you a cheerleader? I mean, no offense or anything, but you’re about the least cheery person I know.
ucas: Come on, let me give you a ride. I’ll let you insult me.
Peyton: First of all, you don’t know me. And second of all, you don’t know me.
--
Peyton: So, why did you just tell me all of that? I mean, we don’t even know each other.
Lucas: Maybe that’s the point.
Peyton: Okay, so, what if he wins? What does he get?
Nathan: He gets you.
Peyton: So, what’d you bet?
Lucas: I win, Nathan stays on the team.
Peyton: Why?
Lucas: Because it’s the last thing he wants. And anyway, it’s not about him.
Nathan: Peyton!
Lucas: I’ll be seeing you.
“There is a tide in the affairs of men. Which, taken at the flood leads on to fortune. But omitted, the voyage of their life is bound in shallows and in miseries.”
“On such a full sea are we now afloat, and we must take the current when it serves. Or lose the ventures before us.”
Peyton: Nice hands.
Lucas: Nice legs.
Peyton: Guess misery really does love company.
Lucas: What are you doing here?
Peyton: Actually, I’m not here. I was never here.
Lucas: You know, I shoot the ball and it goes in. I don’t ask questions. I don’t think about it. It’s just the way it is.
Peyton: Or the way it was.
Lucas: Yeah.
Peyton: Look, it’s just a game. Who cares if the entire school and most of your friends and half the town saw you suck?
Lucas: So, you’ve clearly come to cheer me up.
You want a ride?
Peyton: Look, you mind if I ask you a question?
Lucas: Shoot.
Peyton: Why did you decide to do it? Join the team? Because you don’t exactly fit in here, do you?
Lucas: The game, I guess. I love the game.
Peyton: Right. Same reason I cheer, it’s all a big game. But why not just stay on the playground? Why join varsity?
Lucas: Because I want to know if I’m good.
Peyton: if you ask my opinion, we all just wasted a perfectly good evening. You, me and everybody else in there. Then why do you do it? I mean, do you really like it or not?
Peyton: If I say that I like it, then I’m just another cheerleader. But, if I say that I hate it, then I’m either a liar or a fraud. . Either way, I lose.
Do you want to come in?
Lucas: What about Nathan?
Peyton: What about him?
What are you doing?
Lucas: You just asked--
Peyton: I didn’t invite you to come in. I just asked if you wanted to. Thanks for the ride.
Teacher: Peyton, describe Lucas using just one word.
Peyton: …Choke.
Teacher: Okay, quiet, please. Thank you.
Lucas, care to respond and describe Peyton?
Lucas: Lonely.
Keith: It’s a rule of life: The prettier the girl, the messier the car. It’s a real turn on, huh?
Peyton: Those are my sketches!
Lucas: Um… I wasn’t looking.
Peyton: This is personal, alright? I don’t read your diary.
Lucas: I don’t have a diary.
Peyton: No? “Dear Diary, my daddy doesn’t love me.” P.S. Stay out of my stuff.
Peyton: What, are you stalking me?
Lucas: I thought someone should see them.
Peyton: Well, it’s none of your business.
Lucas: You know what, you’re right. It’s none of my business. I wouldn’t know anything about tit.
Peyton: I know you don’t.
Lucas: Look, just tell me why you didn’t submit them. Your stuff is good.
Peyton: Not good enough.
Lucas: Look, Peyton, why not?
Peyton: I want to draw something that means something to someone. You know, I want to draw blind faith or a fading summer or just a moment of clarity. It’s like when you go and see a really great band live for the first time, and nobody’s saying it but everyone is thinking it: we have something to believe in again. I want to draw that feeling but I can’t. And if I can’t be great at it then I don’t want to ruin it. It’s too important to me.
Lucas: Hey, hold on! Would you take a look at these? You won’t be disappointed.
Lucas: Your art matters. It’s what got me here.
“Hi, this message is for Peyton. Jeff Nelson calling from Thud magazine. Your friend dropped off your sketches and he was right, they’re terrific. Give me a call when you get a chance. We‘d love to talk to you about maybe doing a comic strip for the magazine. Nice work, Peyton. Nice work.”
Peyton: Who do you think you are?
Lucas: Someone you’re pissed at.
Peyton: You submitted my sketches to Thud magazine!
Lucas: And they liked them, didn’t they?
Peyton: If I wanted your help, I would ask for it.
Peyton: Hey… I heard about this. I hoped it wasn’t true.
Lucas: What do you want, Peyton?
Peyton: I just wanted to tell you I’m not doing the comic strip.
Lucas: That’s a mistake.
Peyton: Yeah, well maybe some people aren’t ready to expose themselves to the world like you and your basketball.
Lucas: Maybe you are ready, but you’re just scared.
---
Peyton: I guess I just wanted to say thanks.
Lucas: Wow. Did Peyton Sawyer just say ‘thank you‘?
Lucas: So, I’m confused. You want to be anonymous, and you let the world watch you on a webcam.
Peyton: The world isn’t watching me. But I guess you are.
Lucas: Okay, the point is, you want to express yourself, you just don’t want people to know it’s you.
Peyton: Guess I’m just a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside a bitch.
Lucas: Or maybe just a tortured artist.
Lucas: Why do you do this?
Peyton: If I were you, I’d get back out now.
Lucas: Not until you tell me what’s going on.
Come on Peyton, slow down. Peyton, slow the car down.
Peyton: She was driving to school to pick me up. She was late, so she ran a red light. It was one light at the wrong split second and it ended for her. My mom ran one red light. I run them all the time and nothing happens .It’s not fair.
Lucas: No, it’s not.
Peyton: You can get out now.
Lucas: Or, I can stay if you want.
Peyton: No, you can’t.
Lucas: Hey, I’ve been thinking about you.
Peyton: Try a cold shower.
--
Lucas: You know, I would gladly erase my dad if it could bring back your mom. I wish I could change it for you.
Peyton: Thank you.
Peyton: So, last week sucked. I just wanted to say thanks.
Lucas: You made me a mix.
Peyton: Just trying to square my karma.
Lucas: Uh-huh… Does this mean we’re dating?
Peyton: Listen, you’ve got a long bus ride tonight and I had some free time. Don’t read too much into it.
Peyton: You’ve got a life to live too.
Haley: It just seems kind of selfish.
Peyton: Why, did he [lucas] ask you if he could go out with me?
Haley: Did he ask you out?
Peyton: No. But that’s not the point! No, he wouldn’t ask permission. So why should you?
Haley: Would you say yes if he asked you out?
Peyton: It depends. What song is playing? Am I in a good mood? Is he smiling when he asks or is he doing that goofy brooding thing he does?
Haley: Oh you know, I think he’s definitely doing the brooding thing.
Peyton: He does it all the time!
Peyton: So, what’s the deal? Are we gonna hang out at this annual Scott money burn, or what?
Lucas: Yeah right. Like I’m going to spend the night with Nathan and Dan on my Friday off? I don’t think so. I’d rather stay home with The Great Gatsby.
Peyton: You know, I read a book last night.
Lucas: Really?
Peyton: Yeah, it’s about this girl and this guy and they’ve got this really weird vibe thing going on, but there’s all this drama ‘cause the girl’s got this ex-boyfriend who turns out to be none other than the guy’s brother. So the whole thing comes to this great big climax at this big party at their evil dad’s house.
Lucas: Really. Hm… what happens in the end?
Peyton: You’re just gonna have to show up to find out.
Peyton: You know what, Brooke? Give it up.
Brooke: Trust me, I’m trying.
Peyton: You know what I mean.
Brooke: I’m just trying to help.
Peyton: Help with what? Get me out of the way so you can go embarrass yourself in front of Lucas?
Brooke: That’s funny, I didn’t realize you were in my way. Are you finally fessing up or are you finally denying it?
Peyton: Haven’t seen you much today.
Lucas: Yeah, I know. Every time I get within about five feet of you--
Peyton: Brooke happens?
Lucas: Or Nathan.
Peyton: Loose ends. Those are all tied up now.
Looks like she got you, right here.
Lucas: Thanks.
--
Peyton: Brooke, come on.
Brooke: I dare you to show us how you really feel. Kiss Lucas.
Lucas: What was that, exactly? A game?
Peyton: Kind of. Not really. Wanna play again?
Haley: Sorry! Uh- Sorry. I just, um, your mom called with an SOS. So, I just thought I’d sneak in the back and not bother anyone.
Lucas: You need some help?
Haley: No, I’ll- you’ve got your hands full. So, I’m just gonna… Carry on!
*Lucas and Peyton laugh*
Lucas: You know, I can’t believe I’m actually going to say this but, I’m glad I came.
Peyton: So, what do we do now?
Lucas: I don’t know. What happens next in that story you were telling me about?
Peyton: Come on…
Lucas: I’ve wanted this for so long.
Peyton: Me too. And now we can have it.
Lucas: No, I don’t just mean that. I want this. You know? I wanna be here. I want to have everything with you. I want it all. I want us, Peyton.
Hey, what’s wrong?
Peyton: This isn’t supposed to be that.
Lucas: Peyton-
Peyton: Why couldn’t you just leave it alone?
Lucas: So, we just need to watch her until she wakes up.
Brooke: I can do it. You’ve done way too much already.
Lucas: I don’t mind hanging out. Besides, I’d worry about her too much if I took off, anyway.
Lucas: How you feeling?
Peyton: Like hell. What are you doing here/
Lucas: You can’t remember last night, huh?
Peyton: I remember Brooke took me to a party.
Lucas: A guy slipped you something into your drink. Brooke called me to help out. No, nothing happened, Brooke stopped him. Alright,, I’m gonna go wake her up, okay?
Peyton: Wait. Thanks… again.
Lucas: I just wanted to make sure you’re okay, all right?
Peyton: Lucas… I’m sorry.
Lucas: For what?
Peyton: All sorts of things
Peyton: I owe you.
Peyton: How‘s your punching hand?.
Lucas: A lot better than the other guy’s face. How about you, how are you feeling?
Peyton: Like an idiot. Look, you’re cool with us being just friends, right? I mean, we are… we’re friends, right?
Lucas: We are.
Peyton: Okay.
Lucas: And I’m cool with it. Besides, I wasn’t ready for all that Peyton Sawyer girlfriend drama anyway, you know?
Haley: So, what about Peyton?
Lucas: Yeah, you can kiss Peyton if you want.
Haley: I’m serious.
Lucas: Look, I told her how I felt, all right? She doesn’t feel the same way.
Haley: Maybe she’s just not ready.
Lucas: No, she just wants to be friends.
Peyton: Do you think second chances are a lie?
Haley: Well, it depends on who you’re dealing with, I guess.
---
Peyton: Did Lucas tell you what happened between us?
Haley: Yeah, he just said that you weren’t ready for a relationship.
Peyton: Did he tell you about Brooke?
Haley: That they went out? Yeah. You okay with that?
Peyton: He’s fair game. Plus, she’s really not the dating kind, if you know what I mean.
Is connecting with someone really this complicated or is it simple and we just make it worse?
Lucas: So, what’s up?
Peyton: Lucas, I made a mistake. When you said you wanted to be with me, I got- I got scared. And I pushed you away, but-
Lucas: Peyton-
Peyton: But, the truth is I want all the same things you want, I do. And I want them with you.
Brooke: Alright, Superstar, you ready to score… Hey, we missed you after the game tonight.
Peyton: Yeah, I… I guess I just kind of got turned around.
Lucas: Peyton….
Lucas: Peyton and I just don’t make sense as a couple. She said so herself.
Haley: And then took it back.
Lucas: What are you, her lawyer?
Haley: I’ve seen Peyton really try to make an effort to turn things around. It just sucks that she got bit the first time she reached out to somebody, you know?
Lucas: Haley, I’m not the bad guy here. Peyton’s just too… hard.
Haley: Unlike Brooke who I understand is nice and easy.
Lucas: Look, about last night, I feel really bad about-
Peyton: Can we not relive it, please? I’d had this really weird, long day and I just probably wasn’t making any sense.
Lucas: No, you were. But I had no idea you were coming over last night. You know, and Brooke and I-
Peyton: Make a really good couple. I’m happy for you. You’re a good guy, Luke. And she’s my best friend.
Haley: Oh, it’s Brooke and Lucas. He told me about the other night.
Peyton: It’s my own fault. I blew it.
Haley: Sorry.
Peyton: The worst part is though, Brooke is my best friend and she just doesn’t have any idea how much this is killing me.
Lucas: Where’s Peyton?
Larry: Dressing for school’s my guess.
Lucas: Who are you?
Larry: I’m the guy who’s about to take that rake from you and beat your scrawny ass. I’m her dad, who are you?
Lucas: Oh… Sorry. The front door was open and I thought… I’m Lucas.
Larry: Larry Sawyer.
Peyton: Hey dad, do you know where my- What are you doing here?
Larry: Oh, he’s trying to rake me to death.
Peyton: What?
Lucas: I… thought you were… nothing crucial. I’m gonna go put this back.
Lucas: Listen, I don’t have a lot of quiet time these days. Do you mind if I just sit and read while you draw?
Peyton: As long as you don’t act out the parts.
Larry: Lucas!
Peyton: What are you doing?
Larry: Taking care of my little girl.
Peyton: You are such a troublemaker daddy, stop it. Come on, don’t.
Larry: Hey, sit down, rake boy.
Lucas: Hey. I’m not ever gonna live that one down.
Larry: Probably not.
Peyton: It’s okay, he can be way worse.
Larry: What do you got there? You’re reading Faulkner in school now?
Lucas: No, I just love his stuff.
Peyton: What was that about?
Lucas: She’s mad. She saw us together last night.
Peyton: Oh. I’ll talk to her. Explain to her how bored out of my skull I was listening to you and my dad talk about dead writers all night.
Lucas: Hey, you okay? You seemed kind of weird when your dad called me over.
Peyton: He has just told me about this horrid job he’s taking in New Zeeland so he‘s going to be gone for like, ever now. .
Lucas: Well, did you tell him not to?
Peyton: It’s important to him.
Lucas: But he doesn’t know what’s important to you. You gotta stop pretending that everything’s okay. He might surprise you.
Peyton: You waiting for me?
Lucas: Actually, I’m just hanging out with your dad.
Peyton: Oh, god help me.
Lucas: Mr. Sawyer, your ride’s here.
Larry: Alright, I gotta go. Lucas, you keep an eye on this one for me, all right?
Lucas: I will.
PART TWO HERE.
