Mihashi, Abeytiri decided, was probably the worst sky person he had ever met. The only thing that even assured Abeytiri that Mihashi was, indeed, a sky person and not just an amnesiac incredibly clumsy Na'vi was the strange attire he found him in. Most sky people didn't know how to speak Na'vi, which was fine in its own, and common enough, and Abeytiri could deal with that. He had gone through great lengths and many rigorous lessons to learn how to speak their language. But Mihashi, Abeytiri shortly realized after coming into contact with him, didn't even know how to speak English. Or at least he hadn't shown any signs that he knew more than the average Na'vi.
He had reluctantly brought Mihashi to the Tsahìk after he nearly fell to his death in fear of the Woodsprites (which for whatever strange reason seemed to cluster around him) and of course who should be chosen to have to babysit the skyperson but Abeytiri himself. That was perhaps the worst part of being the chief's son. The entire tribe was secretly laughing behind his back and Haruna'tey was taking bets as to when he would crack. But there was one thing they should have known about Abeytiri, he thought determinedly. When Abeytiri Takaya dedicated himself to a task, then in the name of Eywa, he would have it done. He would turn this bumbling baby into a full-fledged Na'vi warrior or he wasn't the smartest warrior in the village.
"Let's go!" Abeytiri called triumphantly to Mihashi and strode ahead. Mihashi could only stumble after him as he disappeared into the dark jungle.
--
Abeytiri had perhaps overestimated the skyperson's abilities a little, he slowly came to realize as he watched him fall off his mount for the tenth time that day. He had fallen so many times that he was now caked in mud from head to toe. His shoulders shook from fear of the mount but he timidly approached her anyway for fear that Abeytiri would scold him again.
Abeytiri watching him hopelessly and wondered whether three months would be enough when something about the line of Mihashi's arms caught his attention.
"Mihashi."
His head shot up and he looked around in Abeytiri's direction shyly. Well, at least he recognized his name. "Come here." Mihashi froze in place, fear evident in all his features. Abeytiri narrowed his eyes in warning and Mihashi trod over obediantly like a little puppy.
"Stick out your arms." He commanded. Mihashi hesitated again. Without waiting this time, Abeytiri grabbed his arms and began running his hands along them. Mihashi immediately tried to jerk his arms back in response but Abeytiri kept his grip firm.
If my suspicion is right... Abruptly he grasped Mihashi's hand and led him into the jungle.
Strange, Abeytiri thought distantly, his hand is so cold.
Mihashi could only stumble after him.

"And this is how you hold the bow." Abeytiri instructed. As per usual, Mihashi fumbled around and screwed up the hold. Frustrated, as per usual, Abeytiri did it himself and manually instructed Mihashi's body as to the proper way to hold a bow. For some reason, Abeytiri was keenly aware of the close proximity of Mihashi's body. Mihashi seemed to be aware as well since his shoulders shook slightly, but he tried to ignore that fact and focus on the task at hand.
"Aim for that one." Abeytiri pointed at a small viperwolf underneath the canopy of the trees, just peeking between the branches. "You can do it." He added, in case the skyperson was having any doubts.
Mihashi only gulped and nodded in response before drawing the bowstring. He took aim and released the arrow.
Its flight was a little wobbly but it hits its mark true and the creature fell dead within seconds.
Before Abeytiri had time to react, Mihashi burst into a torrent of tears. Abeytiri nearly fell out of the tree in surprise.
"What in Eywa's name are you doing!?"
Trying to stifle his tears, Mihashi could only make vague sounds and point repeatedly at the corpse of the creature and his arrow.
"You, what!? No! That was a good shot! Best shot I've ever seen from a fledgling I might say."
Mihashi shook his head adamantly.
"Then what are you..." He followed Mihashi's gaze to the body of the dead viperwolf and understood.
He leapt down safely to the ground and motioned for Mihashi to follow. Mihashi clumsily imitated Abeytiri's movements.
Kneeling down by the animal's side, Abeytiri reached for Mihashi's hand and rested it on the animal's side. That strange keen awareness came again but he stamped it down.
"I see you, brother and thank you," Abeytiri began and waited for Mihashi to repeat after him. "Your spirit goes with Eywa, your body stays behind to become part of the people." He finished and listened as Mihashi hesitantly but surely spoke the chant. "And that is how we say thank you."
For a rare moment, Mihashi's eyes met Abeytiri's and a thread of understanding was sewn between the two.
For another rare moment, Abeytiri spoke honestly. "You have a keen eye for archery, Mihashi. If it's you then, with practice... " you may even be better than Haruna'tey.
Mihashi didn't respond and Abeytiri found his expression difficult to decipher.
"Give me your hand, Mihashi." The hesitation that Abeytiri was accustomed to by now appeared again, but Mihashi raised his hand nonetheless. "It's hard for me to understand you, but with this..." He met Mihashi's hand with his own. "I can."
The skyperson's eyes seemed to widen in fear at having his thoughts discovered. I'm scared. Can I really do this? his hand seemed to say. Abeytiri's own eyes widened in surprised at having understood. Rely on me, and you can. Trust me. he answered.
For the first time, Mihashi smiled widely from ear to ear. It took Abeytiri by surprise. The place where their hands were joined seemed to grow hot. Abeytiri retracted his hand quickly and stood up.
"Let's go."
Mihashi smiled and stumbled after him.
To be continued....?
