Due to complaints (of rich people?) a major supermarket chain has stopped charging for plastic bags. What interests me is that two other brands in the same company still charge http://tinyurl.com/yfnso2rRead more... )
Disappointing to see Foodtown bowing down to pressure from its wealthiest customers. 5 cents a bag isn't much to pay for adding your carbon footprint to this damaged planet of ours and most conscientious people these days use cloth bags anyway. I'm sure New World shoppers can afford to pay 5 cents a bag anyway. They're already being screwed for grocery prices - what's another few cents?
1) New World (and Pak n Save, and 4 Square) stores are not owned by Foodstuffs, each store has an owner/operator, and Foodstuffs is a collective that they belong to.
2) Keeping the customer happy is the most important part of customer service. Odds are they'd lose more customers by ignoring the moaners than by caving in, and from the business perspective, money is money whether it comes from whingers and moaners or not :P
3) Amusingly enough, when it comes to rounding a purchase to the nearest ten-cent value, New World always round five cents DOWN, meaning often the bag charge was added, then rounded off again.
