so i saw revenge of the sith last night.
the short version [believe it or not] of my review
[contains minor spoilers]
pros:
+ the opening space battle looked breathtaking and beautiful.
+ hayden's acting, while no where near amazing, was much better than the last installment
+ the fight scenes were action-packed and incredible
+ the wookies were pretty awesome
+ it was dark as fuck. moreso than even ESB.
+ the creation of vader's suit was fucking awesome
+ the birth of the twins was pretty cool
+ LOTS of tie-ins to the old trilogy, and it pretty much explains everything
+ the emperor was awesome. as soon as he was "revealed" he started acting all campy and movie-villainy just like in ROTJ!
+ palpatine's manipulation of anakin is very original and executed brilliantly
+ padme didn't talk as much
+ JAR JAR DIDN'T SAY ONE FUCKING WORD.
+ the droid humor isn't overdone like in episode 2 [just a good bit in the beginning and that's pretty much it]
+ anakin burning was a very powerful scene
+ lots of lightsabers!
+ lots of space ships!
+ lots of storm troopers!
+ lots of action!
cons:
- the padme/anakin scenes were pretty typical lucas-love-scene cheesiness [though i was expecting that]
- anakin falling to the dark side seemed a bit rushed, though it depends on how you look at the situation [i don't want to give away anything so i won't go in depth]
- the first scene with vader fully constructed was a bit cheesy. it wasn't terrible, but it could've been better.
- chewbacca's role was very minor
- the wookies/kashyyyk could've been in it more
- i wish kashyyyk was portrayed more like it is in the EU, in an area with lots of big trees rather than on a coast. [it's still pretty neat though]
- grievous didn't have as much screen time as i wanted [though he isn't really a huge character]
overall:
a fantastic, fun, action-packed, adventure, yet very dark and tragic. the best of the prequels by far. infact i'd place it tied with ESB as my favorite. while it lacks a lot of the charm and realism of the originals, it has other factors that completely outweigh to it's favor in comparison. the emotional aspects [aside from cheesy love-scenes] are incredible, and are portrayed much more heavily and dramatic than any other star wars film. the opening space battle is the biggest and best-looking of all 6 films. the light-saber fights are incredible.
if you're like me and in the minority [aka "nerds"] who actually like the prequels, you'll love this movie. if you hated the other two, you'll definately like this one more but there's a chance you still may not like it. i'm seeing it again today, and i will give a much more extensive review [w/spoilers!]
suggestion: if you go see it, don't expect it to be perfect. don't expect hayden or natalie to be oscar nominees. just expect it to be a good star wars movie, because that's what it is.
