---

Mrs Kim burst into the kitchen one fine morning when her entire family were having breakfast together, and exclaimed that a Mr Jung Yunho had moved into the Sortherton mansion just opposite the Kim Manor.

Mr Jung, she claimed, was a single man of large fortune who had five thousand a year. And what was even more exciting, was that Mr Jung was to be attending the ball at the assembly hall that evening.

“Is he handsome?” her youngest daughter, Suelgi, chirped, and all eight daughters burst into girlish giggles.

Mrs Kim looked at her eldest daughter, Kim Ara, knowingly, for Ara was not only the most beautiful and most charming, she was also already in her early twenties, and still unwed, and to say that Mrs Kim was getting anxious was an understatement.

Miss Kim only offered her mother a soft smile. And while the others were busy chattering away about what dresses and ribbons to wear, only Kim Jaejoong, the Kim family’s second child and only son, noticed the flicker of sadness in his beloved sister’s warm brown eyes. He let out a soft sigh and offered his sister a most sincere look of sympathy.

---

Jaejoong knocked on his sister’s door that afternoon, and peeked inside to see Ara sitting by her dresser, looking so very sad.

He walked towards her, and without saying a word, picked up a hair brush and so gently and lovingly ran it through her long dark hair.

“You know you don’t have to marry him if you don’t want to,” he said, breaking the silence.

Ara let out a sigh. “You know that I cannot, Joongie, for it is my duty as the eldest to marry well and help our family. Even if I were to object to it, mother will never hear of it.”

“Nonsense,” Jaejoong scoffed. “We are not that poor. We shall do fine without you having to sacrifice yourself for it. A marriage without love certainly cannot be agreeable, especially for you my dear sister, who deserves all the love and happiness the world can give.”

“Always the romantic, Joongie,” Ara smiled fondly at her little brother. “I do so wish to marry for love, you know, but I am afraid I do not have any other choice. I can only hope that Mr Jung turns out to be a very agreeable gentleman, and that I can learn to love him.”

Jaejoong shook his head at his stubborn sister. He too, silently wished that Mr Jung would turn out to be a fine gentleman who would be able to give his sister all the happiness she deserved.

The assembly hall was crowded with people that evening, and it was filled with such lively music that everyone present could not help but feel their spirits lift. A few of the Kim daughters, Suelgi, Yoonji, Haerim, Yoona, Haneul and Jaehwa were already dancing with the handsome gentlemen who could hardly believe their good fortune in having such pretty young ladies for company. Younha, ever the quiet and reserved one among the Kim sisters, preferred to sit quietly by and watch her sisters have the time of their lives, while Mrs Kim had insisted that Ara followed her in her search for Mr Jung Yunho. Jaejoong chose to keep close to his older sister, for although being two years younger, had always felt rather protective of her.

By the time they found him, Mr Jung was already being surrounded by a group of young ladies, all eager to get acquainted with him. Mrs Kim fought her way to the front, wasting no time in introducing herself and her eldest daughter, who, she was most proud to find, stood out amongst the crowd with her stunning beauty and sweet disposition.

Mr Jung Yunho turned out to be more agreeable than either of them had expected, with such remarkably handsome features and pleasing manners that no one found anything to dislike about him. He had such an air of masculine elegance and confidence about him that made almost every, if not all women blush and giggle in his presence.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, my lady,” Mr Jung said, taking Ara’s delicate hand in his own and planting a soft kiss on it.

He turned towards Jaejoong, “And you, Mr Kim,” offering his right hand in a firm handshake. Jaejoong was most shocked to find his hand tingling at the contact, and his own sudden inability to breathe as he looked up to meet Mr Jung’s piercing gaze.

But what he also didn’t fail to notice was the deep blush that had spread over Ara’s face when Mr Jung held her hand a moment ago, the blush that would remain there for the rest of the evening, especially while they danced the next two dances together upon Mrs Kim’s insistence.

---

“You like him,” Jaejoong teased, when they finally got away from the crowd and were sitting in a quiet little corner.

“Well, he is… very charming. And I must admit, a very skillful dancer,” Ara tried to hide her blush but failed miserably. “Oh quiet, Joongie! Please stop teasing me!” she exclaimed when Jaejoong had started to laugh, covering his mouth with his hand as he did so.

Jaejoong tried to stifle his laughter, turning to face the dancing couples, but was surprised to so directly meet the gaze of Mr Jung from across the hall. Jaejoong turned towards his sister, smiling. “I think he thinks the same of you. He can hardly keep his eyes off you.”

Ara turned to look, and almost immediately turned back, hiding her shy smile behind her hand.

Ara was so obviously charmed by Mr Jung that Jaejoong was worried. This was the first time he had seen his sister so captivated by a man. So far he found nothing disagreeable about Mr Jung, but all the same, Jaejoong did not want his sister getting hurt. He had to make sure that Mr Jung felt the same way about her as she did for him.

He saw Mr Jung conversing with whom he heard was the man’s oldest and most trusted friend, Mr Shim, and he kept close to them, hiding behind a pillar, trying to keep out of sight.

He was well aware that he was behaving very rudely to try to eavesdrop upon their conversation, but could not move away especially when he had heard his sister being mentioned.

“I dare say that Miss Kim seems to have quite captivated you, hasn’t she?” Mr Shim asked, grinning at his friend. “You have been unabashedly staring at her for quite a while a moment ago.”

When Mr Jung failed to come up with a reply, he added, “Well she certainly is the most beautiful girl in the room, isn’t she?” glancing at the spot where Ara was now sitting demurely, conversing with Lady Han.

Jaejoong stepped out from his hiding spot, attempting to listen more closely.

“Yes,” Mr Jung agreed. His brown eyes flickered to the spot where Jaejoong was standing, their eyes meeting for the third time that evening, and Jaejoong felt the rapid beating of his heart against his chest. “Very beautiful.”
