Rachel my wife, and my son Julian and I, and our two dogs Parker and Talulah, decided to escape the aftermath of hurricane Hermine. Tallahassee suffered a direct hit from a category 1. Many trees were felled by sustained 65 mph gusts of wind, which in turn knocked down loads of powerlines leaving our entire city without electricity. This was a major inconvenience. The refrigerator was getting hotter and hotter. So we took our thawing meat and drove north to Georgia. We were storm chasing, but the hurricane looses a lot of speed once it makes landfall. The red clay hills and decrepit plantation shanties of southern rural Georgia were mostly unaffected by the storm. The skies were grey, making the farmlands look southern gothic. Irrigation and harvesting equipment stood unused among the rows of cotton and pecan groves. We arrived in Albany GA, at the Chehaw camping ground. We stayed in a small cabin, and cooked our thawing meat on one of those rusty fire pit grills. We spent time in Albany's downtown area. There were many interesting railroad warehouses, and lots of train activity. One day, we even drove north to Lumpkin Georgia to Provodence Canyon. Provodence Canyon looks something like a miniature Grand Canyon. Improper farming techniques from the 1800s had created this deep clay pit. We also, stopped by Radium Springs. Formerly, Radium Springs was the location of a Great Gatsby like casino overlooking a rock carved grotto of clear blue water. It was known for its curative properties. I really like the idea of magic springs, ala the fountain of youth. Now, it's in disrepair after a bad flood in 1994. The trip was short but sweet, making this the least stressful of family vacations yet. I feel hopeful to travel more often to these quaint hamlets that surround my southern landlocked home. Today, college starts again, and I have to get a math tutor because I may be dyslexic or distempered.
Below are mystical lotto zines that you may find beside a gas station or bodega cash register. I bought one in GA, and now I'm collecting them. Here are some I still need:
