Imagine Being a woman in the 1700’s and being convicted of being a witch. Think of all of the cruel and unusual punishment they would do to you before they actually killed you. Many people think that witches are green, warty fly around on broomsticks and have a black cat. But most people are wrong. “We are not evil. We don’t harm or seduced people. We are ordinary people like you. We have Families, jobs, hopes and dreams. We are not a cult” (Robinson). Lots of people base people on what they read or see on TV. When People hear about witchcraft and witches they assume that they are bad and that they will steal your child and suck the soul out of them to be young again or to stay alive. If you really believe this you should stop watching Disney movies. “They don’t turn people into toads. They don’t clip coupons for eye of newt” (Csillag). Witches aren’t what people think they are. Modern day witchcraft isn’t evil.
Witchcraft has been around since the beginning of time.
In 1604, King James I passed his witchcraft act, which was
repealed 132 years later. It was replaced by an act that stated
there was no such thing as witchcraft, and those who claimed
to have occult powers would be charged with fraud (Dibble).
King James I was tried of hearing about witchcraft. So he passed a law stating that if you said that you had any powers he would charge you with fraud.
By the late 17th century, the surviving members of the old religion, also known as the “craft” had gone underground. For the next 300 years, witchcraft was dead, at least to all outward appearances, but with craft did not die. It survived in covens, often times consisting of only family members, the craft continued.(Dibble)
Many people now that practice witchcraft try to conceal their identity, and their religion. They don’t want people to consider them freaks or strange. So they hide in the shadows. A lot of people that practice witchcraft are everyday people like you and me. Contrary to popular belief, not all people who dress in black clothes and makeup and who listen to heavy or death metal worship the devil or practice witchcraft. If you were to meet a person who practices witchcraft you would never know it unless they were to tell you.
Three hundred years ago the largest witch-hunt in American history gripped Salem, Massachusetts. Before the hysteria finally subsided, nineteen people were executed and more than a hundred other convicted or charged with practicing witchcraft (Gragg).
The Salem Witch Trails is one of the most popular events in history. When people think of The Salem Witch Trails they think of people going around hacking witches limbs or heads off. That’s not what happened. Many people were taking in custody tried for be a witch and was either sentenced to death, or prison. Many cases the court didn’t have enough evidence to proof that practiced witchcraft, so they put them in prison until the trail was over. Now there were a lot of hangings mostly by towns’ people who were scared of them.
Putans believed that the devil gave to witches natural and unnatural creatures known as “familiars” to aid them in carrying out their evil deeds. Some also contended that the witch, in turn, granted Satan permission to use her shape or her “specter” to afflict. Indeed, testimony of someone’s specter doing harm became the most crucial form of evidence in the 1692 trails (Gragg).
In other words people believed that Witches loaded the devil their body to do evil deeds and to do sins. They also believed that the devil gave them creatures most popular; the black cat.
There are many things that people don’t know about witches. “There are many forms of Wicca, but most share a worship of the divine feminine rooted in the ancient concept of mother goddess and her three aspects of maiden, mother”(Csillag). This goes to show you that Wiccan isn’t a devil Worshiping clan! They don’t have little magic wands and go to wizardry school like on Harry Potter. The world bases everything they see on TV to real life. Oh look it says witchcraft is evil therefore it must be. They also say that Chocolate can make you loose weight, and people don’t believe that!
Wicca’s, who form the largest part of paganism say their religion, is rooted in pre-Christian reverence for the earth, nature and the cycle of all the seasons. All natural phenomena are considered sacred. So are all people, regardless of their beliefs. Bricks-and-mortal churches are built, but real sacred spaces are in forest, fields, and hearts (Csillag).
This is saying that the religion of “paganism” is the largest for of witchcraft and that they are mainly about the earth. You know the saying Earth, Wind, Fire, Water, the five elements. This is where it comes from. Also people who are Pagan really don’t go to churches they mainly do it in their own home or go to a place of concealment. “today’s pagans, whose numbers encompass Wiccans, are quick to say point out that Satan, Beelzebub, Lucifer, The Prince Of Darkness has many names. Has nothing to do with their religion.
So before you assume anything do your research. Remember don’t believe anything in a gossip column, Gossip being the main word here. Also don’t believe anything on TV they just try to scare a lot of people. There is so much evidence. So there’s much proof that modern day witchcraft isn’t evil.
