Holy fish guts, batman

Have I really not posted in 3 and a half months? Goddamn. I need to do some diving.

I can't find my dive camera. I have the casing for it still, and all the accessories, but the camera itself is missing, and the casing only works for that camera specifically. It'll probably cost me like $500 to replace.

I've been thinking about buying a video package instead of dumping more money into mediocre photo gear. I can get a casing for just about any normal video camera, so I need suggestions and recommendations from everyone on which ones are good. I'd like to avoid tape-based cameras. The ones that write directly to a DVD are along the lines of what I want. They don't need to be tiny handicams, but I a large casing will cost me around $1300, so nothing too huge. A midsize DVD camera is about right, with still photo option if possible and as high resolution as I can afford. I've heard good things about Sony, JVC, and Panasonic. Any ideas?

EDIT: If it's not a DVD camera, it's gotta have Firewire interface.
