Reviews of Smallvile 7x02-Kara and Supernatural 3x01-The Magnificent Seven

Oct 05, 2007 01:23

This is my reviews of both the Smallville ep 7x02 "Kara" and the Supernatural premiere 3x01 "The Magnificent Seven."  Let's hope I can get thru doing two of these.

Smallville

Clark: I'll say it again, he really needs to go get that training. It's getting embarrassing how he gets his ass kicked by every stray Kryptonian, Zoner, and mutant freak. I mean, I give him props for being able to turn it around on Kara somewhat, but really dude. Its time. He also seemed freaked out when he found out Kara was his cousin. It's as if he was hot for her only to find out they are related. I get quite enough incest is best in "Heroes", I don't need it showing up in Smallville. I did enjoy how Clark was in full on teacher mode tonight. It's a side of Clark I'm more interested in seeing, as he guides Kara here on earth.

Supergirl: So Paris Hilton can fly too. Seriously, when she did her whole don't touch my stuff speech all I kept hearing was "that so not hot." What I did appreciate is how she's been on earth all of 5 minutes and she's already snarking at Clark like your typical little sister. Loved it. And I know I should be upset about that "only human" crack but since I feel that way sometimes, without being a technologically superior alien with kick ass powers its hard to be offended. I swear working customer service so does not breed love for your fellow man. Anywho, good job to the writers for explaining why we haven't seen Kara till now.  Tentatively, I like her. Hears hoping TPTB don't get into the batch of bad crack again and make her evil. Do you hear me writers, Kara AKA Supergirl is one of the good guys and I don't care what you or Jorel have to say about it.

Chloe: Is it wrong that I have a warm fuzzy feeling after editor boy put her in her place. Finally, some respect for Lois's zeal and determination. When she was being dressed down I couldn't help but cackle evilly. I remember how Chloe got the Daily Planet job. When she sold out her best friend to a Luthor the gloves came off. Karma's a bitch, and it looks like she's ready for Chloe to start paying. I'm sorry, but I have no love for people who get ahead thru other people's suffering. On a lighter note I did enjoy the crack she made about Kryptonian fashion. Its nice to know that Clark's rainbow bright wardrobe comes naturally. And as for those photos from Belle Reve she was looking at. Are they supposed to look like head shots from the local casting agency, because I have a drivers lice photo that could use some work.

Lois: Yay, to her getting the job at the Daily Planet. Using her smarts to get the story, and almost getting killed doing so. Now that's iconic Lois Lane.

Lex: *Sigh* You really need to stop obsessing over the House of El. It will only cause you trouble in the end. It's time for you to find a hobby. One that doesn't include clones, aliens, or their ex's. I mean it dude, I say this with love. As for Lana, well done. You found her in an intelligent and believable way and are now surrounding yourself with qualified and competent minions. Keep this up and I'll actually start to believe your a threat.

Lana: Speaking of Lana, how fucking awesome was that confrontation and reveal. Yes, Lana is brilliant. Using her own clone to fake her death. Then planning, and taping her confrontation with Lex to get him put away for her murder. Realizing her setup didn't work, she lures Lex into finding her, knowing that he'll want to confront her directly. Yet in the end she can't kill him. Perhaps there's a part of her who still loves him. If only a little. Perhaps it's because she remembers the years of friendship and companionship that proceeded their marriage. Or maybe Lana just isn't a killer, at least not a premeditated one. Personally, I think it's all three. Whatever the reason, I'm actually sorry that her and Lex are no more. For good or for ill Lana is definitely a Luthor now. Bravo to KK and MB for acting the hell out of that scene. I could feel Lex's remorse over what he did as well as his respect and amazement that Lana could meet and beat him at his own game. While KK combined anger, riotous indignation, and vulnerability, beautifully. Do I believe that Lex wanted Lana to shoot him? A part of me does while another part thinks that as ruthless as Lana has become. Lex knew she didn't have the killer instinct. I do believe that he love's Lana in his own way aside from the Clark sublimation,(after all he doesn't create clones for just anyone) and that he truly doesn't want to hurt her again. Of course what Lex wants and what he does are many times two different things. I flove how intelligently the whole thing was handled. Right down to why Lex knew Lana wasn't dead when there was conclusive DNA evidence. All he had to do was check his own facility to know that his wife's clone was missing and then put the pieces together from there. I know I should be more upset about the morally ambiguous waters Lana is sailing in. After the faked miscarriage not to mention the clone, it's kinda hard for me to feel bad for woobie Lex. Also, I'm so in awe of what a badass Lana has become, that I'm more interested in seeing this side of her flourish then putting a lid on it. Really, if the writers keep making sense like this with rational plot lines and believable motivation my head might explode. For my money Smallville season 7 is looking pretty good so far.

Supernatural

I must admit that the "Rolling Clouds of Doom" or RCD, was a pretty good special effect. I also liked that red shirt # 1 at the beginning of the episode at least tried to run. I'm so over character's just standing there in dumbfounded fear while the big nasty comes to get them. As for the rest, I'm going to break it down to what stood out for me.

Dean: First and last and always I just love him. How he's handling being "dead man walking" just makes me love him more. Dean life has always been in general to take care of his family and specifically to take care of Sam. Since John put little Sam in his arms and told him to protect him that has been the guiding force of his life. With John dead and out of his reach and Sam alive and healthy. It must seem like this huge burden has been lifted. Death and even and eternity in hell are far better outcomes in Dean's mind then living his life without Sam. Both because it means he failed at his life's goal, and in doing so failed his father. And also because he just loves and needs Sam that much.  A life without Sam whose his purpose in life is not a life worth living. Incredibly selfish yes, but just this once Dean's, OK with that. For possibly the first time in his life Dean puts his desire ahead of his brothers. The sense of freedom gained from letting go of his brother as well as his impending death has left him positively giddy. There's a saying that "the candle that burns brightest, burns shortest" and Dean is glowing like a supernova. A carefree Dean is an even more (like he needed the help) charming Dean. He wants to live and savior the life he has left, while kicking some demon ass on the way. He's going to eat what he wants, screw as much as he wants, and even use his impending death to get his way with his little brother. His attitude is jerky but also empowering. He's going out of this world the same way he lived his life, with a rebel yell. Go Dean, go!

Sam: I hurt for Sam. Not only did he die!! Here he is trying everything he can think of to save Dean's life. While trying to remain empathetic and respectful of his situation. Until finally, he can't take it anymore and he blows and finds out that not only doesn't Dean care if he dies, but that he will sabotage any efforts Sam makes to try and save him. Talk about having a bad week.

Mystery Blond Hunter: You know the petite blond coming out of the shadows would have been far more ominous if a) I hadn't already seen her in the previews and knew she was a hunter and b) she didn't remind me of Kaley Cuoco the blond chick from season 8 of Charmed. Since I hated Kaley's character Billie with the fire of a thousand suns, this does not bode well for my viewing pleasure. Instead of thinking wow she's good,  during the knife scene, all that was running thru my head was that Buffy did it first and better, next. Not a promising start. The only bright spot is that she could still be evil, or possibly in league with the yellow eyed demon. I mean if my sweet Ava can become a homicidal serial killer, anyone can. And if there's any justice in the world, Not!Buffy will die at the end of the season as well. Heck this chick is making me miss Jo for god's sake.

The Demon Bar: It's Willies only a hell of a lot scarier. I also like the twist of the demon redneck hassling Tamara's husband not because he was African American but because he was a hunter.

Speaking of the Hunters Dejour: Tamara has gorgeous skin. Seriously, I need to know what she uses because it was friggin poreless. As for the rest. I feel bad that her husband died but I get the feeling that she's gong to cause trouble later on. All in all this episode was a decent season starter. I'm just glad my show is back.  - [erspma
