So, I just read an article at Yahoo!, saying that there may be racial bias in TV -- and, naturally, it's toward/against (depending on how you look at it) black people. I just love how that's the automatic assumption. Heaven forbid it be against white people - the world might end.
I mean, the starring actors DO get some say in their scripts and they do have a great deal of choice in their non-verbal body language -- which the study made a point of mentioning, because that seems to be the only thing said 'researchers' can find to bitch about. I find it absolutely fascinating that a black character can be completely contemptuous, insubordinate, and unprofessional -- such as a great deal of Uhura's character in the new Star Trek movie -- and not only is that not a problem, it's permissible because 'it's a black person breaking free.' Free of what has yet to be explained clearly.
I'm not getting on a soapbox here; I'm just amazed that people have nothing better to do than waste millions of dollars on a study that, in essence, says 'there MIGHT be racial bias, but it's present only in non-verbal cues that even our college-educated study group didn't consistently pick up on.' Oh, yeah. Such a ringing endorsement for success. Good Lord. Some days, I really thing a fair portion of the human population is too stupid to breathe. I mean, it's really difficult to ignore race -- which is the underlying point of equality, one would think -- when people do out of thier way to make race matter. Something to think about.
