I finished my toy yesterday! Yay! Haven't had a chance to try it out, but I should soon, maybe tomorrow. I'll try to get pics. I'm sure the penguins will be terrified of it - they're terrified of everything. But terror is enrichment, too. :P I also squeed a bit... I put a toy ball (with little rattle balls inside it) in for the otters a few days ago, and when I walked by yesterday, Kenai was fast asleep with it on her chest. I got pics. XD
I officially started free-feeding today, too! :D I fed Blackie (harbor seal), got checked off on feeding Rascal (Arctic fox) and did the sea otter scatter feed. :D No pics, sadly, 'cause it was pouring and I like my camera dry. :P
Apparently, this week there was like no positive news in the world... so we had four news crews come in to do stories on our polar bears. Their big story was that our polar bear exhibit is reopening. Erm... it was closed for less than three weeks, and it was just a little repair to keep up an aging exhibit. But whatever! It was publicity! And it worked, 'cause the zoo was PACKED today despite the constant rain. :P I keep checking to see if any of them have posted the video online, but no luck. Channel 4 did a bit about it today, Channel 5 did a segment about it on their morning show earlier in the week, and Channel 13 did a segment on it a couple of days ago, and I don't know what the other one was. Found one of the news stories
here... no pics or video, though. :( We rotated all four bears out today... Blizz and Glacier were boring as usual... after 20 minutes on exhibit, they'd gone to a back corner (out of view of guests) and were demanding to be let back into the dens. Kenny slept a lot, but got up to play when I tossed in a ball full of veggies. And Boris was FREAKIN' ADORABLE. He was playing with every toy in the exhibit like it was brand new. Pouncing on the balls, cuddling the barrels... oh, too cute!
I'm almost at the end of my internship!! Sad! I'm gonna miss working with Bee and Blizz and everyone. :( I'm starting to look at real jobs now... eep! Been messing with my resume, but I'm still not really sure what to do with it. I've never really seen good zookeeper sample resumes, so I'm not really sure of the best way to format it to include duties, species information, etc. without making it look like a giant blob of text. If any of the zoo-minded people out there can help, I'd greatly appreciate it! (If you'd rather, my e-mail address is in my profile)
I also was thinking that it might be kinda fun to do little animal information entries every so often. Maybe a specific topic in zoology, or an entry about a specific animal, or an aspect of ecology or conservation or whatever. But I want to make it interesting to people, so if there's a specific topic you want me to cover, shout it out! (*insert "The More You Know" graphic here*)
On a marine-mammal-related note, we came across this article while surfing the net at lunch today. Absolutely, completely, utterly ridiculous. Dear lord, will Bush get the fuck out of office already before he destroys the whole planet? There's a special circle in hell reserved for him right now.
Memo to scientists: Don't discuss polar bears And ZOMG!
